NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

It'd be interesting to see if MTL passes on Wright (for whatever reason) and picks someone like Slafkovksy. Can't remember there was that much of a shake up on draft day. Biggest one I can recall is Seth Jones not being picked in the top 3

For me Hischier over Patrick is still a big one, obviously it has worked out but Patrick was projected number 1 for yearss

Elite Prospects has some spicy takes this year as per usual.

Very in depth though, and the formatting is quite clean this year.

Nazar in the top 5.

I'm high on Nazar but 5 is too high. Was pretty disappointed in how he finished the year.

Watched all his USNTDP games this year and he definitely faded towards the end, which is why he's fallen on a number of lists.

I was just looking at mynhldraft prior years, and in almost every year, the oilers take whomever they were predicted to take. It is almost like the scouts just used that site as their guide.

The couple years they didnt follow they selected worse. Like when they were projected to take Matt Tkachuk and took Poolparty instead.
Puljujarvi in 2016 was a consensus top-3 pick. No one predicted him to drop out of the top-3. It’d be like if Slafkovsky was avaliable at #5 and Philly took Gauthier over him.

Agree. Typically a very good OHL resource
Not typically, he’s the best. Has been covering the OHL for almost 15 years.

Really respect his work. He was the first person singing Mintyukov’s praises this year.

This guy really knows what he is talking about. Not a great year from the OHL. I found when I watched alot of the 2020 OHL season he was absolutely bang on.
I'm a big fan of Brock Otten, he is a great resource. I remember him hyping up Andrew Shaw for a few years. His write ups on him made me really want the Sens to draft him. Shaw ended up going in his 3rd year of draft eligibility back in 2011 in the 5th round. He went on to win 2 cups with Chicago as a really solid depth player and a few really impressive seasons from a production standpoint.

Seeing how Shaw turned out convinced me that Otten has a really good eye for for undervalued prospects. I put a lot of weight into his assessments.

I think Goyette could be the Giroux of this draft. Undervalue and under scouted because he is from the same area for minor hockey. OHL scouts just dont come to Ontario East. This guy was a scoring machine this year. Wish the sens had a 2nd first rounder to take him, he isnt top 7 but he might end up belonging there. You just cant teach skating, skill and hands like that. Glad that Otten likes him too, reinforces what I saw. I think he could be a steal if a team gets him in the 20's. His second half of the OHL season which was his rookie year was absolutely insane. Scored more goals than Wright on a way worse team with next to no support.

Very underrated player. Led his team in scoring by over 20 points and in my viewings he had to create a lot of offense by himself.

I'd be fine moving back in the draft and taking a flyer on him.

I like Goyette game also - he'd be the perfect risk-reward pick in the second round or even late first.
He was far and away the best player on his team, above even a first-rounder from last year Chase Stillman who was dealt from the team at the deadline.
I think one of the best indicators of a high-end talent on a bad team is when you outscore your next closest teammate by a sizable margin. The best example of this is when Jason Robertson outscored his next closest teammate by 30 points during his draft year. Goyette outscored his next closet teammate by 23 points this season - showing he was clearly carrying the offense on the team.
There are questions about his ability to think the game at a high level, and that his descison making isn't all that good. This could be explained by him having to do too much of the lifting on offence and forcing risky plays because his offense was inept at times.

I do wonder what the numbers of OHLers like Goyette would look like this year if he had even half a season of OHL games under his belt before this year.

To miss an entire year of development and come in as an OHL rookie and put up over a PPG on a bad team with little help is very impressive.

OHL crop looks bad this year but I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few hidden gems in there.

I saw half of one game with Goyette and wasn't watching him closely. Otten seems to like his game and his prodcution is nice.

If we decide to trade back maybe he falls into our range.

eg. trade 7th and 39th for 9th and 29th. Take Kasper and Goyette.

So...what's the knock on Savoie? From what I see, the only downside is size (and he doesn't look like he's going to get any taller).

Is there something else I'm missing with this kid? From what I see, he plays hard, has great skills, and I don't see any obvious skating problems. Has good vision and hockey IQ.

I'd obviously rather get one of those two RDs, but I wouldn't be disappointed if we end up with this kid.

Damn...this made me do some research and he certainly does look good.

The comments from you, Hale and Spitfire seem very well informed as well - he seems like a hidden gem.

Any time I have watched him (which is admittedly a small sample size of under 5 games) he gets outworked in puck battles easily and isn't great in his own end.

Again small sample size, maybe I am wrong, but thats my take on him from what I have seen.

And Jarmo, a Finn, passed on him.

That should tell you that the consensus in these situations is not that reliable. It shouldn't be entirely ignored but teams have access to so much more information than the people who come up with draft lists do; the consensus is a partial picture at best.

Don't forget that the Blue Jackets had just dealt Johansen to Nashville for Jones and didn't have a #1 center.

Dubois being able to play center definitely played a factor in going ahead of Puljujarvi.

Pierre Mcguire talking on a podcast with Jimmy Murphy certainly sounds like he's not on board with Wright at #1.

2 round Mock
Today, we’re going to try something new. This will be a two-round mock for the 2022 NHL Draft — however, I will not be the only one making picks. We are bringing in an anonymous hockey ops source from an NHL team with knowledge of the player pool to provide a unique and distinct perspective. They’ll be making every second pick.

7. Kasper (picked by NHL source)
39. Salomonsson (picked by Pronman)
64. McConnell-Barker (picked by NHL source) (DJ will call him Barker)
