That would be Jack Sparkes. He played in the OJHL this year. Teams must be pretty interested in him considering he got an invite to the combine. As long as he tested and interviewed well then he will go fairly high (inside the top 3 rounds or so). I am not sure whether this is the case or not but I think prospects that get invited to the combine tend to go within the top 3 rounds (or possibly the top 4) if they go later than that it is likely the case that they didn't have a good combine or interviewed poorly.
I don't know much about Sparkes as a prospect and can't find any footage of his play or scouting reports on him. From his OJHL stats he does have 72 PIM. In skimming through the game logs almost all his PIMS are from roughing, crosschecking, and boarding.
Here is a rough estimate of his PIMS breakdown: 9 cross checking, 4 tripping, 1 hooking, 1 slashing, 4 roughing, 1 interference, 1 holding, 3 boarding. One of his roughing calls was a double minor, where he was also given a 10 minute misconduct for inciting an opponent. In another game he got a 2 + 10 for head contact.
So at least from his PIMS it looks like he is a pretty physical player who has a strong tendency to crosscheck. The fact that he has only 1 holding and 1 hooking call is a good sign, it might suggest that he has good gap control, angles well and has decent agility. The 4 tripping calls could suggest that he needs some work with his stick, maybe he is being too careless with it.
Guys that get invited to the combine go undrafted every year. An invite doesn’t guarantee a high selection, especially for outlier players like Sparkes. Interviews and testing really aren’t going to decide much, one way or another. The invites for some players are to confirm things. When teams see a 6’8 player, they’re going to light up the same way they did with Curtis Douglas, usually the size makes teams make decisions based on the numbers after the height and weight rather than the players themselves which leads to so many terrible drafting decisions over the years.
Sparkes is a 5th-7th round guy, and that’s only because of his size. He’s not an NHL level prospect if he wasn’t that big, and even with his size I don’t think he’s worth a pick. 6th on his OJHL team in defensive scoring, not worth a pick in the draft, would just be throwing a pick away on a hope and a dream.
Guys that size are as rare as guys that are 5’6, and those that make it are putting up strong numbers in much better leagues.
His one ranking of 127th NA has him on the edge of drafted/undrafted, though his 6’8 height will guarantee someone takes him higher than his play dictates.
Last year from rankings 120-130 NA, 4/11 were drafted (6th round being highest) strange year with Covid.
2020 from 120-130 NA, 3/11 were drafted strange year with covid
2019 from 120-130 NA, 6/11 were drafted
2018 from 120-130 NA, 3/11 were drafted
2017 from 120-130 NA, 6/11 were drafted.
