NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

Didn’t love Mann’s interview with TSN1200 just now. Seemed sort of thrown off by JR insinuating that the Sens didn’t have a great 2021 draft, which is unlike him.

His answer about drafting players that are hard to obtain in Free Agency on a decent contract or via Trade is worrisome.

Sounds like in the case of Boucher, they identified him as potentially a really good role player down the line, and something Ottawa will eventually need vs taking the player with the most potential.

Like I get it if you were trying to put the finishing touches on a team and the player appears to be NHL ready, but our roster is far from set in stone.

AND, while he doesn’t have the size, is there any doubt that Greig won’t be a better option at RW for us?

Unlike Mann? Did you see how rattled he was after the draft last year? The guy can't take criticism at all.

This is how I expect the draft to go, but all it takes is for one team to draft someone else anywhere in the top 6 & Ott should get one of the top 6 players. Gauthier is the wild card whether he gets into the top 10 or not, but he seems like a Philly kind of pick.

1. Wright C
2. Slafkovsky LW
3. Cooley C
4. Nemec RD
5. Gauthier C/LW
6. Jiricek RD
7. Lekkerimaki RW
8. Kasper C
9. Nazar RW
10. Korchinski LD

Must have missed that. We had a bit of a draft party in the pool, so might have tuned out when he was talking. Was it a video or on the radio?

I just meant he typically has come across as confident in his selections in the past.

He was confident, he just lashed out a bit at internet know it alls. In response to some questions.

He was for sure defensive, but for a guy who’s made a lot of good selections it must suck to constantly deal with internet nerds who talk shit with nothing ever on the line, and no consequences at all when they are wrong.

It was a nice sound bite and totally true.

What Internet nerds does he constantly deal with?

He is a public face 2 or 3 times a year handing out soundbites that are nothing but positive because the kid was just drafted or is going through a rookie/dev camp so the world is their oyster.

Also what consequences should we all be facing when we inevitably are wrong in a post? You agree you would face the same harsh judgement, correct?

He gets paid a fair bit to do something he loves and be attached to an NHL team and just like anyone in any pro sport in any city in the world, they will face public scrutiny.

I expect the actual personnel from athlete to org members all handle any negative comments on this board far better than posters.

Us, everyone who thinks they know everything and absolutely has to share it with everyone.

Anyways, he dealt with it just fine. Can’t complain that we always get stock answers and then also complain when people show emotions. Oh wait, I guess we can! ;)

I don’t think anyone would ever describe a role player by saying “teams don’t give you that type of player”. You can get a role player pretty easily. He didn’t say anything we don’t know, they took him because they see him as a legitimate power forward.

I would be shocked if he ever reads anything posted on here.

Not sure if he is on Twitter but perhaps he has to read some items there but in general he is very insulated. Doesn't have to answer to the press much and Internet boards mean nothing to him.

If Boucher (and I hope this ISN'T the case) doesn't turn out then I would hope he is mann enough to say they reached based on X, Y, Z and were wrong. That would be a good way to own up to your role - everyone makes mistakes but pretending you are above reproach never looks good.

For those that are interested in stats, TopDownHockey has released the outputs of his model for the 2022 draft. Byron Bader's model seems to be more known or referenced more, but I like TopDownHockey's model more than Bader's model because TopDownHockey does not use binning, does take into account height and weight, and TopDownHockey does not use points as a measure of success at the NHL level. Unfortunately, the model for this year is paywalled for now; however, I'll post the top 10 by star probability. Star probability is the probability a prospect is in the top 18.5% of WAR per 82 games. NHL probability is the probability a prospect player 200+ NHL games.

A guy I wouldn't mind the Sens picking up in the later rounds is Ryan Abraham from the Windsor Spitfires.

He isn't the biggest player but he is a very aggravating player to play against. He has a ton of skill and isn't afraid of sizing up bigger players after the whistle and can often be described as "undisciplined". He is similar to Antonio Stranges in the sense that he uses the Mohawk to great success in the offensive zone skating circles until he finds a play he likes. But unlike Stranges he plays with his heart on his sleeve.

He is small at 5'8" but man is he a joy to watch.

Its surprising to me that Cooley is rated lower than Kemell and so much lower than the top 4. Also surprising that Slafkovzky is not in the list. Oversight Perhaps.

Who knows, but possibly none. Doubt anyone could know the answer to this.

But, some can't pass by an opportunity to berate their favourite villains yet again. ;) That's the mantra. LOL.

Its why advanced stats in hockey just aren't that useful. They never are in team sports really other than baseball

Slafkovsky is low because the model doesn't account for OG, WC, or Hlinka games. He is third on my list as of now.

What did he do. Some just expected him to “admit he was wrong” for picking Boucher. And he didn’t do that. And rightfully so?

“Fans disagree with the Boucher pick”

Mann with Boucher standing like 20 feet away “yeah you know they’re right. Such a dumb pick sorry.”

It isn’t oversight. Slafkovskys liiga numbers just don’t have him fitting on this list. From what I can understand.
