NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

Gord Wilson was talking about the 7th OA today & said he thought it made sense to have it in play because whoever they draft at 7th isn't going to help them next yr & they need help now. I disagree with that in that they could find someone at 7th overall who will certainly help the team down the road a few yrs & grab a couple of free agents who can help now. They have plenty of cap room & enough prospects to make some decent moves without selling the farm. And they have several prospects who will challenge for spots at training camp & be callups for next season. I'd keep the pick to assure they have a quality player for yrs to come.

If Jiricek/Nemec falls to them they will have the top 4 D they are trying to land now.
If Cutter falls to them they have a very good powerforward to play with Jimmy.
If neither falls they could add a skilled forward or a big centre with skill. They will have plenty of options & should still draft a quality player IMO which I would rather have than another rental.

Isn't Garland gritty and doesn't he have some agitating qualities? I'm not sure Dumais has those qualities.

From what I've seen, I do not see an argument for drafting Dumais in the top 60. I think people are getting a bit enamored with his point production and are not sufficiently scrutinizing his tools. The fact that he wasn't invited to the top prospect game or the combine gives me the impression that many NHL teams are seeing similar problems with his tools like I see. Maybe there is some other footage of him that would give me a different impression but I have serious doubts about what he will become.
I know nothing about Dumais other than his size and production, but it would be worthwhile trying to figure out what is leading to his success. Some players accumulate stats in a way that doesn't translate to higher levels, whereas others do.

I look at guys like Stone or Alfie who were drafted late (probably due to concerns about skating), but I feel their hidden skill was the ability to make good decisions very quickly, and that's a skill that will definitely translate. Ceci is kind of the opposite (watching the Edmonton game last night brought back the nightmares). You can have all the tools in the world, but if it takes you two seconds to decide what to do, and ultimately make the wrong decision, the tools are worthless.

Not to mention you can still trade the guy you just drafted if there's a trade worth making. As long as you draft the right guy and don't reach, that is.

A lot of noise and smoke around moving that 7th overall from the media. Not enjoying this

My guess and only a guess is that the Sens will have their list and if someone in their top 5 lands to them at 7 they make the pick. Otherwise if they have a trade they like they will pull the trigger.

Again depends on how the draft falls and who is available via trade. Lots of uncertainty

It is fine to have it in play. If we get a great return that helps us near term and beyond (a young, yet established RD or RW as example).

I really don't want to use it for much else as despite being optimistic I truly believe we need more high end youth that will be on ELC to round us out in 2 or 3 years.

I could 100% see us grabbing Noah Warren (in the second picture) with our early 2nd round pick. He is going to be a late riser. He is very raw but some team will fall in love with his size and potential and snag him in the late first/early second imo.

If the Devils aren't much much higher on the players available at #2 compared to #7, I'd gladly offer our two 2nds + #7 for #2.

Slafkovsky would be the perfect finishing piece for our offense long-term.

If this is even in the realm of possibility we should slam it hard.

I'm guessing it's not, though.

I’m pretty sure the Devils will just draft one of the two top players in the draft. Those picks are never traded away.

NJ is also in the exact position you’d want to be in roster wise to make that pick and add to the core. Same with us and our pick.

I'm so happy to see the Senators interviewing Warren. You need guys like him to have success in the playoffs!!!

I do not look to Gord Wilson for hockey acumen or advice. He is a spokesperson for the team.

This latest pronouncement is probably Senator's PR at work laying the groundwork for a trade to support the GM.

I wonder why they interview Slafk . Maybe Dorion try to make a trade with NJ
It makes perfect sense to interview all top picks. Not interviewing the top 10 picks would be mismanagement to me.

It will be very interesting to watch the first 6 picks in this entry draft. There could be a lot of movement within that group as I am not certain that Wright will be the first pick, nor Slafkovsky nor Cooley. Each of those has some element to their game that the others do not.

What would you add to 7oa to move to 2 and be Slafkovsky?

Our second round pick, Boucher and Colin White. :)

Advice? He's a hockey analyst on the radio that has ties to the team because he covers the team for the radio station. I'm driving in my car ... I turn on the radio .... & he's on the radio. He's not a spokesperson for the team, he works for the radio station, he has opinions just like we do. Why do so many people think these guys are spokes people for the team? It is in their interest to not say something that pisses off the team, especially when EM was running the team or else they would lose access & their job depends on it. Since the team is based in Ott they might be fans of the team too or not, who knows. Of course it makes sense to interview all the top picks but it also makes sense to listen to all offers for the pick, that's his job. I just disagree with moving the pick, but I understand that the pick whoever the 18 yr old is may not be a difference maker next yr as he said.

Apparantely NJ have call often last year for Gus . So 7 + C.Brown + Gus
Does not interest the Devils whatsoever, they can probably get Gus for free off waivers this summer, and a UFA that doesn't fit in with the team

If you want to move from 7 to 2 you're going to be giving pieces that hurt, like Pinto and Greig

I should not have used the word "advice"! :)
Gord Wilson almost never seems to provide informed opinions that would be inconsistent with the team's interest, similar to Garrioch. I know the reasons why.

I don't think they can get Gus for free, with our goalie issues and injuries I think we are probably fairly likely to keep 3 around in Ottawa.

But I agree with the premise that it doesn't get us close. If they want Gus theres probably a price to do it, but its not #2 lol

Why would Ottawa put Gus on waivers when they put Murray there last season and he went unclaimed? They know that they can put Murray on waivers whenever they want (and if he gets claimed, then that's actually good for Ottawa).

And I really don't see how Connor Brown doesn't fit in with New Jersey. Brown would fit in with every team in the league, he's speedy, excellent defensively, a great PKer, and can produce in the top 6.
