Isn't that why we have Stutzle, Norris, Batherson, Chabot & Sanderson? Tkachuk also puts up pts as does C. Brown, Formenton, Joseph & I expect Pinto will. They also have plenty of guys who can produce pts by committee. The kind of guy you are talking about is usually in the top 3 of a draft & it's no ones fault that Ottawa has only had one of those when SJ sucked & we were able to draft Stutzle.

Trading for those also costs an arm & an leg so they have been doing the best they can with the picks they have. Even then it doesn't always work out & sometimes they get lucky with other picks. It would be great to have an elite player, but how you get one isn't as easy as people make it out to be.

Not easy when you're spending high picks on physicality and intangibles.

If we actually start making more picks on guys who have elite creativity or hockey IQ maybe we get lucky?

Stutzle and Sanderson lack creativity and hockey IQ?

Fiala or giroux would add some much needed pure skill and offense to our team . Skill and speed are such big factors in these playoffs .

Was impossible for the Sens to pick a guy like Tkachuk or Boucher with top 5 picks in the 2020 draft.

There were no players anywhere close to that range that fit the profile they typically look for.

Also Stutzle and Sanderson are probably the most physical players picked in the top 10.

Doesn't mean that those two lack hockey IQ or creativity

So is size and toughness on the back end. Probably the most important part in going deep. Sens really need another guy on the right side. Really liked Whiteclouds game in the WHC his game is definitely progressing from last year. Doubt Vegas would give him up he is on a great contract for a long time.

No. Others like Boucher and Rogers and Bowers and Lazar and White do.
Which of these lead their team in goals at the WJC?

Give me Lazar and White over the other 3 any day and Bowers probably could be a serviceable player.
Rogers we will see .. long shot.
Boucher imo a future as a bottom 6er if he can develop

I agree . Biggest priority to become a playoff team that can win a series.

Mobility on the backend so important. Seeing Calgary’s D got shredded by the Oilers makes you realize guys that can’t skate and stick with the skilled players get
Exposed

Hedman would be the embodiment of size and skill of what you need. Thomson is a good skater with decent size, JBD apparently has trouble sticking with fast players, Chabot is good, Brann doesn’t have the playoff size, Sanderson seems like a perfect combo of size and speed, Zub is a prototypical size and agility guy.

Honest Playoff D that can succeed in Ottawa:

Chabot - xxxxx
Sanderson - Zub
Xxxx - Hamonic
Xxxx - Thomson / JBD

Ottawa D is such a work in progress.

Who can't skate on Calgary's D? Everyone on their D is pretty mobile besides Michael Stone.

Kylington is a fantastic skater, but he's the only one imo that can match up with Chabot or Sanderson on their Backend and he's more or a 4-5 or good bottom pair guy.

Gudbranson isn't great, but not terrible, I do find he struggles with guys that can really change gears in a hurry though.

Overall they don't stand out to me as a good or bad skating backend. Not to many groups can skate with McDavid though.

zadorov and gudbranson. I like Calgary and was cheering for them but they had no answer for McD besides hoping Mike Smith had diarrhea and didn’t put his contact lenses in

Dumais never even received an invite from teams to the combine, he's going to go later than people want, and many guys people will complain about will be picked ahead of him

Hi there. My name is Qward, not really but for this argument it is.

I am here to tell you, that if Ottawa does NOT trade away the 7th overall, they need to draft Frank Nazar.

Have a good day.

That’s why you can’t make a blanket statement, like you did.

That’s makes those picks even better then.

Not a Sens type pick.

Too smart, too skilled, not big enough, not physical enough.

I'll bet anything Gauthier is higher on the Sens list. Maybe McGroarty and Snuggerud too.

Completely agree with you though.

I like him a lot too, but do we really need to add another C though?

No, not necessarily so.

A trade could be conditional depending upon which players were taken before the pick and which players are available at the pick.

It could also be "close to final" but not finalized until the draft is in progress.

It also might depend on negotiations with any player coming in the trade for his next contract.
This actually happened with subban being traded out of montreal I believe.

Gauthier should definitely be higher on our list, and I'm not exactly high on him, and Snuggard would be fine either way

McGroaty I wouldn't think would be very high on the Sens list. Has the intangibles, lacks the skating they look for in the 1st. Sens look for skating as one of their highest qualities in the 1st, can almost eliminate poor/average skaters from contention

What do you think he ends up as at the peak of his career? Do you think he is being undervalued or that him not being invited to the combine is a strong indication of what his actual upside will look like?

I wouldn't use a pick in the first 2 rounds for sure, and even then there are probably guys I'd still rather after. If he's still there at Boston's 3rd I may take a swing just on the very slim off chance he can somehow overcome his size/skating deficiencies at the NHL level.

He wasn't invited to the CHL top prospects game (which NHL teams populate) or the NHL combine (which NHL teams populate). He's an extremely skilled player, very smart, but has extremely small size, and is an average at best skater. That doesn't make it easy to translate your game at a higher level.

A team will probably, Arizona I would guess, take a chance and reach on him late 2nd and hope he can somehow overcome the skating. I'd let someone else take that gamble.

I'd be extremely surprised if he became an everyday NHL player. He's got the head and skills, doesn't have the size or legs, and that combination is dangerous when NHL blueliners almost all have both.

He will make a career in hockey, undoubtedly, I don;t think that will be in the NHL

I just watched his highlights that was released by the QMJHL. This is my quick assessment from the clips they showed:

I feel his success is driven by a high hockey IQ, excellent vision and great poise. He has a lot of composure with the puck and is able to make quick reads to find open players and generate chances.

With that said, his physical tools give me a lot of doubt about his upside. His passes and shot come across as too slow for me. They are a good enough speed to generate offense at the QMJHL level but I am not confident that it will translate well at the NHL level. He can make the quick reads but the NHL is a really fast game and I see his passes getting intercepted and his shot getting stopped. I don't know if it is a biomechanics issue or a technique issue but it presents me some questions about how quick his passes and shot will be at the next level. Maybe that can improve as he physically matures but again the question is how much.

The highlight clip also made me question his overall puck control and his ability to protect the puck. I didn't see what I would classify as elite level stickhandling as he wasn't dangling his way through everyone. At least in the clips I saw he didn't display that elite puck control that would allow him to maintain possession and keep the puck way from anyone. He also didn't give me the impression that he can win the puck battles in the corner and really shield the puck. With his average skating he would need to compensate for that with elite puck control or elite puck protection and I am not sure if he will be able to do that.

Maybe my read is off or I would have a different opinion from watching some other footage but from that highlight clip those were some of the flaws I saw in his game.
