NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

I don't think so, Norris & that top line which he is contributing to their success has been one of the best lines in the NHL this yr before the injuries. Why can't he stay as the #1 C if they continue to gell together & play well? They will also have numerous other options to mix up the lines when things aren't going well.

Pinto IMO has top line potential & could be the best two way centre soon if he can stay healthy. If they can create a good 2nd line with Stutzle, Pinto & a very good RW like a C. Brown that would take some of the load/pressure off the top line. Next they also have the prospects/players to make a good 3rd line & 4th line IMO which also should take the pressure off the top two lines. IMO they have all the makings & most of the prospects/players in place to be a better team soon, they are already playing so much better & beating very good NHL teams now.

People mention they need a top pairing defenceman & IMO Sandersn can be a top pairing D, but as long as Chabot is here he should be the top dog at LD. There are two RD studs in this yr's draft who most have in the top 10 & if Ottawa were to select one of them that would add another very good RD to their stockpile. Both have & are playing in men's leagues & doing well & both have NHL size already & wouldn't take that long to be in the NHL. If we look at the pipeline & who they could add at this coming draft, IMO they should have all the pieces in-house. And whatever they don't have they should have the assets to acquire it. I see potentially a very prosperous future for this team.

I have Pinto on the third line so we can have an elite centre potentially on each line.

Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Jarvente-Stutzle-Kemell
Formenton-Pinto-Greig

Grain of salt rankings .. throwing darts .
For some reason I’m not into draft prospect research this year like 2020 but I like what you have with 2 minor changes. Yurov up a group and Savoie down. Good job throwing that out.

Perfect, thanks a lot. On the point about "not always about agreeing with a player in a particular ranking", I take your point, but I also feel like in a way the rankings are able to say more than words can. All of the "flowery motherhood" will never say as much as going out on a limb and ranking a player in a bold position. But I guess you're referring to the "why" and not the "that".

Anyways, for me you are the undisputed master of this stuff. Might be a couple other posters here I trust more when it comes to assessing prospects, but when it comes to knowing and "evaluating" the scouting services, you're the man.

I don't suppose you would be willing to bless us with kind of ranking, or at least a list of your most trusted sources?

I get people can be looking for different things, but for me, all I care about is predictive ability. I want to know how well a service or person predicts future outcomes in terms of games played, points, or WAR. One issue with this is that most platforms are too new to evaluate predictive ability. A second issue is that some platforms have a lot of lists, but it's hard to access them. So for me, it's hard to evaluate most services beyond agreeing or disagreeing with any given player ranking.

Since you might be interested, this is EliteProspects' consolidated list. You do have to pay to see this list, but it can be deduced for free, and that is what I did, so hopefully it is allowed to be posted.

Savoie not in his top-10? Very strange, unless he didn't personally scout him.

Probably not going to be that uncommon among scouts.

Lot of them won't be able to get past 5'9.

Yeah this might be my least favorite draft-discussion trope - "if you don't agree with my assessment then you must not have seen the prospect play." Yuck.

Personally, I still have Savoie in my top ten, and if I were to guess, I'd say he will end up being drafted in the top ten, but it wouldn't be that shocking to see him fall out of it. Between the size, the issues with consistency and pro-style game, and the fact that there are a bunch of other really good players in this draft, at this point I'm very doubtful he's a top five pick, and thinking he'll most likely go towards the end of the top ten. And yeah, I've seen him play a lot.

Anybody have any recommendations for games to scout today? I'm off work today and not much planned, but unfortunately all the junior games seem to start around the same time, so I've gotta pick just one or two. Sudbury would be fun with Goyette and Quentin Musty. Winnipeg would be good too; I already have plenty of viewings on Savoie, but could use a good look at Geekie. Oshawa would be fun just for Calum Ritchie, but I'd prefer a game with some top 2022 players as well.

Oh, the Sudbury game is against Mississauga. I haven't seen Owen Beck yet. That's a handful of 1st/2nd round candidates for '22 and Musty for '23. I think we might have a winner.

I am going to watch Kingston - 67s .. more for our 2021 pick.

Goyette interests me.

I would like the next Chara, Jamieson Oleksia or Tyler Myers please for our defense. Even if is a late round project we need to always try and find these monster gems. Preferable defense but will take some forwards just in case also.

Like taking a 6’5 D with our 7th round pick ?

It's interesting to spend a few moments on Hockeydb.com

Only a tiny fraction of top 10 picks the last 12 years have a cup (2009-2020 inclusive). And only a few more have ever been to a cup.

120 players, I did a quick count and only ~ 5 have a cup and only ~7 have been to a final. There may be others, I have no desire to go through all 120.

It sure does seem like a top 10 does not get you anything other than a good regular season record. The 1996-2008 did not fair all that much better. So, in 24 years and 240 picks, you have only about 14 to 16 cups and 20 to 22 finals appearances. Again, these numbers may be a tad higher or lower. No desire to get the precise number.

Let's hope this trend changes!!!!!!

Wouldn’t mind Ottawa taking a stab at one (or both) of Gatineau’s RD eligible for this draft in Luneau and Warren.

I wouldn't mind losing a few more games to help our lottery odds. I don't wanna finish outside the top ten because these idiots actually hit the iron hot. Being a sens fan who's really excited about the draft is a chore sometimes.

Like I want to build a cup contending team but we need more highly skilled players and we aren't getting lucky with the lottery.

Two losses last year would have taken us from Boucher to Clarke.

Chabot-Clarke
Sanderson- Zub
Kleven-JBD/Thompson

At best this team has a first round exit core. I want a cup contending team but our idiotic luck condemns us to frickin purgatory.

Rant over.

Why do people think we don't have enough skill? We have plenty of skill, unfortunately half of them are injured. When this team is fully healthy they are going to be as good as almost any team. Are they not proving now how good they can be beating & being so competitive against teams much higher up in the standings. They should add some more skilled players at the TDL or draft.

When I talk about skill I'm thinking more on the lines of elite scoring. I'm fine with the Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson line but who else in our organization (forwards) can match up with Stutzle.

I would like to see how Greig could partner with Stutzle. Slafkovsky with Stutzle or Kemell with Stutzle. The Robin to his batman.

It's not a trend. The 2006 and 2008 drafts produced 7 guys altogether and once a different team wins the cup, a bunch of new guys will be added to the list. And why would you include years like 2017-2020? Not a lot of cup champs pick in the top 10 the year before they win
