Hypothetical Question

If the Sens were to win the 1OA pick in the lottery do you

1. Pick Wright
2. Pick Slafkovsky
3. Try to trade out for an unprotected 2023 1st + from a team you feel will be pretty bad next year

The 3rd option is fairly enticing in that at least the top 3 next year project better than anyone this year.
Wright

So if we win the lottery. First overall. We take Shane Wright. And then what? Which of the 3 current Cs move to wing?

I think both Josh Davies and Liam Arnsby will be targets for the Sens in the mid to late rounds of the draft. They are among the best hitters in the draft and fit in pretty strongly with the kind of identity they Sens are trying to build. They are only average height but they are strong and look to have stocky builds. They just seem like the kinds of players that the Sens would really like.
I'm not sure how many of these guys they would want on their team, they would be fighting every other shift. I love the hitters but they could also use anothe goal scorer too.

Wright all day.
That’s the traditional play BUT who moves to wing. Wright plays right away so it’s a good problem to have. I was just thinking maybe we could take advantage of Montreal as they are hosting the draft.
Wright shoots right so he could probably start on the wing with Stutzle or Pinto. If he shows to be more efficient at centre than one of the centres we have now which I doubt will happen in his first yr he could learn the game from the wing first. They could always move Stutzle back to left wing as well & replace him at centre with Pinto & Wright replace Pinto on the 3rd line. Lots of options.

Earlier picks will be used for scorers and prospects with higher skill potential. The Sens have 11 picks in this draft so they will be using at least some of them on identity guys. Davies and Arnsby are identity guys. The Sens will still need depth players in the future as some of their current prospects might not pan out or they could price themselves out of Ottawa as they get older. Prospects like Davies and Arnsby offer a hedge against such scenarios and allow the team to continue to stay competitive with cost controlled depth.

Guys like Lekkermaki, Hamara, Kulich, McGroatry and Mattias Havelid have had some upward momentum because of their play at the u18’s so far.

I'd pick Wright just cuz te allure of a franchise centre is too good to pass up. Either one of Norris or Stu could be moved to the wing, or heck Wright would be fine on the 3rd to start in a sheltered role.

I'd avoid picking Slafkovsky cuz he doesn't seem as surefire as Wright and I'd avoid option 3 even though its very enticing. MTL and Arizona seem to be the only teams that look like tank teams for next year and I don't know if I can stomach MTL having the 1OA cuz of us, unless we get a really sweet package.

Interesting. I’m not convinced Wright is a franchise centre, I mean he is 1OA this year but Slafkovsky has a very high ceiling and fits a need. Tough choice. Let’s hope it’s our choice to make.

Would almost make it easier for us to have the 2nd or 3rd overall :D

We should get a good forward where we’re picking and that’s great.
Now we can stop with the losing and high picks.
Next year the rebuilt sens start their journey.

I agree that Wright should probably start at wing on the 2nd line with Stutzle or 3rd line with Pinto.

Stutzle is thriving at C so I would keep him there. Norris is more shooter than playmaker, so I might move him to wing but only if it becomes necessary. Pinto still has much to prove but is older than Wright and therefore more mature than Wright at this point.

I wouldn't mind starting Pinto on the 4th line.

Don't matter how good he looked in his less than 20 games. We're setting him up to fail if the expectation is that he transitions perfectly into a bottom 6 role.

I agree. Drafting for "identity" is as bad as drafting for "position". "Skill" (skating, shooting, puck handling, scoring) should be the key criteria for drafting, particularly in the first round. A team can acquire physically tough or defensive oriented players via trade or UFA at a lower cost than a first round draft pick.

I disagree with everyone wanting to move Norris to the wing, I think he is better than Stutzle at centre because he is the guy they put out against the other team's best centres. Stutzle while great offensively has proven he still needs lots of work defensively & doesn't always make good choices. Yes, Norris has a great shot, but he also comes back defensively & breaks up a lot of plays below the circles defensively. He also has great chemistry with Tkachuk & Batherson & I would not break them up at all. He's also good at faceoffs & much better than Stutzle who could use someone who is very good at faceoffs on his line, like Giroux. The people that love Stutzle are quite willing to break up the best line on the team to help Stutzle rather than finding him his own line mates who have capatibility with him which is difficult given the way he plays.

If you keep Stutzle at centre than there is no reason why Formenton & C. Brown wouldn't work with him they have worked together before & done well. C. Brown has almost 40 pts in 64 games, that's not terrible & Formenton might get 40 pts himself next yr too. We all want better forwards to play with him & they may put Batherson with him again, but IMO he does more on his own & doesn't use his linemates as well. He hangs on to the puck for long stretches & players are caught standing around just watching & waiting for him to do something with the puck. Formenton & Brown play well together & well with him & while they might not be a great line they might be his best options for next yr. He's a difficult guy to play with because he is very unpredictable with the puck & hangs on to it for long stretches. And because he loses it a lot he needs a guy like Formenton & Brown who can both get back on defence quickly.

Here's a question, if they win the lottery do they still try & make a move to add a top six forward? Or why lose assets to bring in a player when you might already have someone internally that could fill that role? I would like to see them try a number of guys first before making any moves to bring in someone who could cost a lot & then maybe not work out, we've been down that road a few times.

Stuetzle has been quite good defensively since moving to centre. I’m not sure what you are seeing. Both he and Norris are centres, full stop.
