NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

I still have Wright number one but the more I watch of Slafkovsky, I can see the argument for having him 1st. Same goes for Cooley though actually.

Kinda funny, someone mentioned that one of the media scouts from a non-hockey background (maybe Pronman) usually likes to go against the grain with his list, and this year his was pretty vanilla. Now the real scout McCagg goes kookoo bananas. Weird f***ing draft year.

1OA touted prospects, let alone 1C that have been locked as 1OA for 1-2 years ahead of the draft rarely ever actually drop out of 1OA I find. It's always the lead up to the draft trying to drum up some hype around the airing of the draft, but everyone knows, that 6'2 center with amazing skill is more likely to climb than fall.

09 - Tavares undisputed 1OA. Hedman was never going to be picked ahead of Tavares despite media chatter.
10 - Debatable but I'd say Hall was undisputed 1OA. Taylor vs Tyler was purely for their names, but everyone had the skilled winger a tier above Tyler Seguin who only eeked into the conversation his draft year if I recall.
11 - RNH undisputed 1OA.
12 - Yakupov undisputed 1OA in a year of the defenseman (8 of top 10 picks were D)
13 - MacKinnon undisputed 1OA.
14 - Ekblad undisputed 1OA from 1-2 years ahead. Don't think Reinhart/Drai slipped out of contention.
15 - LOL, but both were 1Cs anyways
16 - Matthews undisputed 1OA again for years. Same as Taylor vs Tyler, purely marketting, albeit Laine made it interesting with the pre-draft season he had + WJHC.
17 - Probably the only time, Nolan Patrick, the 1C projected 1OA from 2-3 years of discussion actually dropped. Even then, he only dropped to 2OA.
18 - Dahlin undisputed 1OA x 5+ years
19 - Hughes undisputed 1OA.
20 - Lafreniere undisputed 1OA.
21 - Power undisputed 1OA in spite big Cs trying to climb up.

I see 0% chance Wright drops considering he's been touted this long, and there's really still no knock on him regardless of what risers are around.

There's a flaw in your argument. Some of those guys only emerged as undisputed first overall the year prior to their drafts. Perhaps if there had been hockey for everyone last year things might have looked different coming into this season, Power, for instance, didn't emerge as the consensus top choice until sometime around the end of his D-1 season. I also feel like Ryan Murray was the guy for a time before Yakupov, if I recall correctly. And yes, as the other person mentioned, definitely Couturier was the guy for a long time before Hopkins emerged.

draft Nemec and once he broke in Sens would have one of the best defenses in the NHL for the next 5 years.

Figured I'd try another ranking. Just top ten this time. Not much change from my last list except Lekkerimaki continues to climb.

1. Shane Wright
2. Juraj Slafkovsky
3. Danila Yurov
4. Logan Cooley
5. Simon Nemec
6. Jonathan Lekkerimaki
7. David Jiricek
8. Conor Geekie
9. Frank Nazar
10. Kevin Korchinski

I honestly think we end up with another top 3 pick and its pretty realistic scenario right now.

We're only 5 points away from being dead last in the league.

I have a strong feeling we are gunna end up with nazar

This seems somewhat unlikely to me. Smaller player. Tenacious after the puck but not particularly tough or physical. Exceptional two-way hockey IQ but thinks offense first. Can be a little on the risky side with the puck. Wouldn't be the most shocking pick, but I have a feeling they'd take some guys ranked well outside the top 10 (Ohgren, Luneau, Kasper, Gauthier, Pickering) before they'd take any of Kemell, Savoie, Lambert or Nazar.

I don’t know what to think about the like Slafkovsky give to the Melnyk news. If a lack of respect or if because want to be draft from us

Lack of respect? He's a great kid, smart too. You don't have to worry about things like this. And yes, he's probably talking with Ottawa.

Although I prefer Jiricek to Nemec I don't think you can go wrong with either & agree with you that picking one of these two RD would benefit the future defence of this team for yrs & IMO is what is required. Forwards we can get if they are willing to pay the assets for them, but top pairing D especially right shot D are rare & the opportunity to draft one with some size IMO is special & we should take advantage of that in this upcoming draft.

At this point this is what I'm hoping for. Two big 4 pointers coming up against Detroit.

You know the Sens are going to have a strong push to end the season, as they do many years. Games don’t matter, teams take nights off, Sens play hard to earn their keep for next year.

The pick needs to be out in play if it falls towards 7 or so. Get their list together, get a trade put in place dependant on who is taken with the picks prior to ours, and if we have a list of 5 or however many guys in a tier above that are gone, make the trade as soon as the last player on that list is taken. This of course is me putting what I’ve been expecting should be a very clear top 5 for the Sens, which of course is just head cannon on my part.

They aren’t passing Buffalo, but I’d be very surprised if they never passed the Hawks.

Sens have, BY FAR, the most winninble games down the stretch out of all the teams they are battling for a high pick.

In their remaining games the Sens play:
Philly
Jersey
Habs x 2
Wings x 2
Kraken

That’s 7 games against teams that are at the very bottom of the league and playing poorly.

Habs have - Sens x 2, Philly, Jersey
Devils have - Wings x 2, Habs, Sens, Kraken
Flyers have - Sens, Habs, Hawks
Hawks have - Yotes x 2, Flyers, Kraken
Kraken have - Sens, Devils, Hawks
Yotes have - Hawks x 2, Devils
Wings have - Devils x 2, Sens x 2,

Sens have, by far, the easiest route to pick up points in the remaining games.

Picking 6th OA is a good position to be in if they want one of those two RD IMO. This is pretty much how I see it going down too with Ottawa picking 5th or 6th.

I'd be crushed if after the season we've had we don't get a top 3 pick, let alone a top 5.

i'm sort of numb to it after last year.

I mean how much worse could it be be than to never compete all year only to draft 10 and miss out on Eklund, Clarke, Guenther just to take Boucher.

A worse fate is not possible this year. (hopefully)

I see the two RHD as that fallback plan, either would be great additions but one of Wright, Slafkovsky or perhaps Cooley are the prizes this year. I also think both D could be gone by 6th.

I kind of feel like I did the year we took Sanderson at 5th, lots of good option, no one clearly stood out as the obvious choice from 5 to 9, though this year for me it's nobody clearly stands out 3 or 4 to maybe 7. That said ivinot really found the time to really educate myself on this year's draft, so I may be out to lunch.

I mostly agree, but I see it as a top 4 as I did with 2020 when it was Lafreniere, Byfield, Raymond, Stutzle all pretty close. Here it's Wright, Slafkovsky, Yurov, Cooley. Yurov looks like a pretty special player to me. In the same tier as Raymond, Stutzle, Cooley. Wright looks pretty similar quality to Lafreniere. Slafkovsky looks a little better than Byfield. All are better than anyone in the 2021 draft. The next tier down would include the likes of Sanderson, Drysdale, Holtz, Beniers, Power, Hughes, Clarke, Eklund, McTavish, Nemec, Jiricek, Lekkerimaki.

Figure that the sens have to get lucky with one of their first rounders at some point right? Move up a couple spots.

Even their first rounder that went to Colorado dropped. And the pick they used on stutzle was from San Jose
