Top 3 pick? They probably step in next year or the year after. I do believe we need to get a top 4 D and top 6 forward still
Step in next year and do what. We’re still waiting for stutzle to dominate (it’s fine that he’s not). And people here say he’s the best player in that draft. Sanderson still isn’t here. Both fine. But top 3 picks is no guarantee of stepping in soon and making a massive difference.

Im not advocating trading the puck or anything. Just saying

again I clearly state that the top 3 pick is not the solution for next year we still need to get a top 6 forward and top 4 D. Hell we may need two top 4 D and run Sanderson in the bottom pair

I wouldn't trade a top 3 pick though you get cheap talent for a few years and someone like Wright/Cooley could be the 2nd best forward on our team in time

Ok so the question would be : Who are the guys that we know already the Sens won't draft?

We know they didn't like Sillinger, Coronato, Lucius, Lysell, etc last year. Who will we pass on this year?

Savoie, Cooley and Nazar for sure?

Not necessarily. The guys listed from 2021 were in the 10-20 range. We currently have a pick in the 1-6 range.
Nazar is a long shot; but Savoie and Cooley would be fantastic gets, especially the former IMO
The higher the pick, the more likely that the Sens will pick within the consensus.

@theanalytic I am curious what's your take on Matthew Savoie. Kid has been very hyped from a young age. I've always been pretty hesitant about him, but had him top five coming into the year and still had him top 10 in my last rankings, but I'm seriously considering pushing him out of the top 10. What do the numbers say? I mean I can see for myself on EP where he ranks in p/g among U18s in the WHL over the past 20 years, and he's alongside some players that went on to be stars, but also some fellow small forwards like Petan, Weal and Shinkaruk who did not. But I figure you've got some advanced models and whatnots?

I will not get excited for a top three pick...

We will go on some pointless 5 game winning streak that shoots us up to 8th last

I've prepared for that situation as we can still get a great pick Lekkerimaki. Sure it may be a small reach but he's got 9pts in 26 games for Djurgårdens mens team but for their U20 team 35 pts in 26 games.

Top-8 pick seems almost safe as it would be hard to pass the Wings and/or Sharks who have 8 and 10 more points with the same number of games remaining. So let's assume we pick top-8, you say Nazar won't be considered at this spot, which leaves Savoie and Cooley

Do you feel confident the Sens wouldn't pass on these guys?

10th OA is pretty high and we didn't pick within the consensus last year... Does it have to be top-5?!?!

I regret cheering for that win against the leafs that resulted in us dropping to 10. Just missed the consensus top 9, only to draft a potential third liner lol.

I love Geekie's game, has some real Mark Stone vibes to it. But he also makes Mark Stone look fast. Just not sure he has the speed necessary to translate but I absolutely love the way he plays the game.

Or do others disagree with me on that? I could be too harsh, and maybe he's got that Nick Paul quality of looking slower than he really is, I don't know. But he looks very slow to me.

I’ve gotta say - I watched a bunch of vids/clips/highlights of Geekie a couple months ago, and was completely unimpressed.
He looked somewhat lethargic, takes a while to get up to speed, (not bad once he gets going), his size seemed to let him get away with things im not sure he could do at the next level given guys are bigger coupled with his seeming lack of footspeed.
I also didn’t find his hands that great, nor his compete level.
Like I literally came away thinking I wouldn’t draft that guy. Now, it was 20-30 minutes of stuff so take it all with a grain of salt.

I highly doubt Savoie or Cooley would be available at 8.

I really hope we draft within the top 3-5 because I can completely see us trading the pick for Fiala outside of a top 5 selection. We are set at getting a top 6 forward 100% so it could come down to:

1st+Jarventie+Brannstrom/JBD for Fiala

vs

Slafkovsky/Cooley + Giroux + we keep all those guys above instead.

Very easy choice for me.

I think he is solid, but I'm not super high on him. I have him tenth on my list as of now. The model I like isn't up to date with this draft, but we can look at the players you mentioned to provide an example of what Savoie's statistical profile might look like. The numbers are based on TopDownHockey:

H. Shinkaruk: Star prob (36.62); NHL prob (67.11)
N. Petan: Star prob (43.22); NHL prob (79.14)
J. Weal: Star prob (34.66); NHL prob (77.39)

Of course, none of these players are a perfect comparable because I think it is fair to say that Savoie, by the eye-test, is considered a better prospects than any of those three were. It's hard to find a comparable for Savoie because so few 5'10" and smaller players are considered top 10 prospects by a large percentage of people, and when they are, they generally have much stronger numbers/eye test than Savoie. With that being said, I think the best comparable for him would be someone like Clayton Keller. The model will like Keller more as he has better numbers in his DY-1, DY, and he was younger, but he is still probably the closest comparable in terms of how stats and eye-test view Savoie.

Although the seasons are not over, I'm guessing Savoie will place around ninth for strictly NHLe in this draft. As of now the model has Kemell, Nazar, Yurov, Jiricek, Cooley, Wright, Nemec, and Howard with higher DY NHLe values than Savoie. Drop Howard, add Lekkerimaki and Slafkovsky, and that would be the list of players I have over Savoie.

This team isnt winning the cup next year, so why do they have to step in next year? In 2 years they should start to be really compeititive and thats when this players is going to start to make an impact and be on an ELC.

Is Wright still the consensus #1? We are on our way to the bottom.
I think Slafkovsky coule easily go 1. Id take him first.

Still the consensus, yes. But Slafkovsky does seem to be making things interesting. Current 4 game goal streak in Liiga gives him 6 points in his last 6 games.

I'd still go with Wright, but can see why some would go for Slafkovsky. He reminds me a fair amount of Rick Nash.

Or Hossa. He has more physical raw talent than Wright it's not debatable at this point. That's where you have to trust the scouting. How much better is Wrights hockey sense and is it enough to justify taking him as the far less physically gifted player. Based on this teams recent drafting I think they take the physical specimen. However they've also been pretty garbage overall lately so I am not expecting the right decision.
