Nemec/Cooley are no brainers if available
Savoie/Lambert are a swing for the fences
Slafkovsky/Kemell/Jirichek are safe picks, but not as high-end as others could be

Very wrong. Kemell is just as big a risk as the above group. Jiri and Slaf has as much skill as anyone in this draft.

I keep yelling for Slaf but I'd love any of Wright/Nemec/Cooley/Jiri/Slafv..... it's when we get outside that group I get seriously underwhelmed. I was huge Savoie guy a year ago, but I have not seen any serious growth from him to warrant picking him top 5. I also thought he'd grow a bit more.

These guys put out well respected rankings. I have never subscribed but I hear good things about their annual black book. They scout in the rink and they have contact with NHL scouts. I am not promoting them just fyi.

They have Geekie higher than I have seen him on most lists. They also have Snuggerud higher than Gauthier which we don't see much.
Given their rankings from 4-7 .. I think I would take Nemec or Jiricek. Cooley is quite tempting in that range.
What do you guys think? Is Cooley a must take from that 4-7 group given his almost universally higher ranking.
McKenzie had Cooley #2 at Mid Season.

Kss line. But how in the world do we get both? Honest question. If by some fluke we are in a position to get two picks high enough I would use the pick to draft a one of Jiricek or Nemec and one of Slafkovsky or Kemell.

Geekie at #2 is very strange, yes, if Cooley falls to us they should take him & Jiricek at #7 is right around where I expect the Sens to pick which is good. Yurov & Kemell out of the first rd after many were very high on Kemell is also weird, he's 2nd on Lines.com. First time I see Pickering in the top 10 too. Doesn't look like they will get another pick in the first rd, I also noticed that Nathan Gaucher C/RW has fallen out of the first rd, could be an interesting pick in the 2nd as would Tristan Luneau RD.

It's gonna burn when he's drafted one pick ahead of us.
That looked very ordinary to me, he skated one way & then skated the other way, took the puck to the slot & made a rather easy shot that the goalie should have had. Still concerned Slaf could turn into Puljarvi or Sanford.

I like Geekie, but I'm not sure he should be rated that high, but Ottawa could use a little more size at centre. I wonder what would happen if they did draft Geekie when they have Norris, Stutzle & Pinto. What do you think would happen?

Ya, I noticed Cooley as well, and he's right around where we'd pick (based on current points %).

Yeah it’s not an insane play or anything. But I still really like the player and think he’d fit well on this team.

Yeah it goes back to the old question of size vs skill. By every other measure Cooley should be an easy top three pick. But as a smaller center, he might not be the guy organizations want to build their team around. Its always the case that fans and media scouting services are going to be higher on prospects like that, whereas real scouts tend to go for the big bodied center. It's what the NHL is all about. Who are the sub-6'0 centers in the NHL right now besides Crosby? Nugent-Hopkins, Paveslki, Hughes are the only that come immediately to mind. Pavelski and Hopkins are excellent players, but maybe not franchise players on contenders. As much as I love Cooley, I don't think he is on Hughes' level as a prospect.

Anyway, to answer the question, hell yeah you gotta take Cooley if he is there after 3. I also wouldn't mind at all if the Sens took Geekie. As I've been saying, I don't see too much difference from around 4-12, and maybe even a little beyond 12. And yes, that is both a slight to the top-end quality of prospects, as well as a testament to the depth of this draft.
