Gut feeling is that Slaf and Wright will end up either a Hab or a Devil. Starting at pick number 3, it’s a free for all.
NJ doesn't need more centermen. They want Slaf. Habs and Arizona need centermen.

NJ Devils GM Fitzgerald is doing a live interview on youtube and was asked a question about 2OA trades. His answer was.

"Everyone calls each other but its mostly kicking tires, As of right now there isn't anything of substance related to trading the 2OA."

perhaps, but anyone at #7 is 2 years away from playing.. the rebuild has to be finished in max two years and we should be ready to compete for SC by year3. IMO, the only pick of value this draft after Wright, would be Nemec or Jiri to give us the immediate playing time and learning curve. If not those guys, Id prefer to just stay with our team, baggage and all and keep offloading for current prospects like Barron etc... hopefully hit on 1 or 2 by next year (heinman, etc..) and a few of our current draft crop make the jump.. the rest can be filled through FAs next year. still need to tank in 23 - bottom 3 pick here we come!!

finally doing this right.

Disagree. 'Doing this right' would involve allowing our (hypothetical) #7 pick to properly develop. Outside of whoever we draft with our first pick, everyone else we draft will be at least 2 years from playing, and that would likely include Jiricek. The availability of Nemec/Jiricek at #7 should have zero impact on our rebuilding plans. If you really want to pick a high end D this draft, Mintyukov is also an interesting option if we nab another pick in the 10-15 range.

If our offer starts with Anderson it will be easily beat
By what? Contenders aren't looking to trade up to the 7th pick and there's not that many sellers in the league, and if they are the pieces they have worth trading are probably worth more than the 7th in a "crappy" draft. Chicago didn't want to move Debrincat for the 5th+.

Buffalo: Have literally no assets they're looking to move worth a top 10 pick.
Detroit: Assets worth that are pending UFAs.
Anaheim: Not much they're looking to sell & has value
New Jersey: Looking to compete
Arizona: Already sold everything except Chychrun and Sens aren't looking for D.
Seattle: Gourde+ maybe?
Chicago: DeBrincat wasn't available for a better pick than theirs
Winnipeg: Dubois probably gets something better but maybe 7th +? Scheifele likely wouldn't re-sign with Ottawa
Isles: Lou rebuild? lol
San Jose: Hertl or Meier if they're looking to rebuild.
Los Angeles: Apparently done their rebuild
Nashville: Don't have any forwards the Sens would bite on in my opinion and also look like they're trying not to rebuild

FWIW, the vibe I get from NJ (Devil posters and publically available info) is that they’d pick Wright if Habs pick Slaf, even if they’re set already at Center. Could be just posturing.

Is effort a problem, too? The scouting reports I saw said he was effective once he got where he was going but he took way too long to get there. In the NHL he'd need a taxi on the ice.

People always mention Getzlaf with Geekie because he was a big slow guy who worked out his skating, unlike pretty much every other big slow guy in junior. McCarron would have been a monster if he worked out his skating, too.
Mccarron wouldve been a good 4th liner, maybe 3rd.

Geekie has skills beyond anything Mcacrron has ever shown. They are not the same. Geekie is along the lines of other big dudes from past draft, Dach, Kotkaniemi, Strome, Byfield, Lundell. Hes a possible first line talent and a flyer you take in the 5-20 range.

Of course, if Habs pick Slaf, they will have to take Wright OR Cooley. But they do prefer Slaf. No other wingers of this caliber .

Yeah I like the player but every media thing I’ve seen with him I got the impression that it would be unpleasant for him to be under MTL’s media coverage. To the point where I think it’s a knock on him compared to the other two.

Wright does it effortlessly although it’s always the same canned responses (which is fine).

Slaf looks like someone that would thrive under the spotlight, already making jokes and looking like he doesn’t give a f** about media, which would serve him well.
Laine was like this too if I remember correctly.

NJ already have Hughes, Hischier and Mercer.

Hughes and Mercer are terrible at faceoffs, Hughes especially. Mercer has played just as much on the wing and likely converts to that. If they drafted Wright he'd still get a shot at a top six centre role. They could even end up in a Hirschier/Hughes/Wright situation.

If the best player available is a centre and you got Gretzky and Crosby already down the middle? You draft the centre. They are still the best player available.

I've been mostly lurking since the end of our season.

I would prefer that the 1st overall prospect would have been a concensus, no-questions-asked, generational talent.

This just makes it possible we get another Wickenheiser.

I HATE players who play in 2nd gear and can't kick it up and show more urgency, unless they are head and shoulders over everybody else skill-wise, like say Jean Beliveau was. I previously said I didn't want Wright, then said I'd take the chance, and now I just don't know. I mean, it's not helping that I have never really seen any of them play. Looking forward to the WJC to see them play after they've been drafted.

I'll trust our scouts and front office to pick the right player.

AS I wrote, NJ would love Slaf, but they will pick Wright if Slaf is not available to them. If they really want Slaf, they gonna give something to the Habs to switch 1 and 2. .

Thats the thing though, Wright is above everyone else skill wise.

That can be learned. Even McDavid was super bad at faceoffs when he started. Same with Suzuki.

I agree his skills are way better than McCarron's, but his skating might be worse. I don't know, maybe if he has actively avoided working on his skating until now and finds the right coach...

Hard to have worst skating than McCarron. Totally different player. Geekie has very good offensive skills and he is not a fighter.
