I hope you are right about Mesar. He was looking good in camp, but is currently way to far down in the OHL scoring for us to be optimistic at this time that he was drafted later than he should have been.

Guindon and Rohrer are outscoring him, and Beck is far ahead in his entire game.

Hopefully Mesar finds another gear.

I have not watched Mesar play in the OHL this season but if I was going to evaluate him, I would evaluate his ability to drive play with his skating/skill. Ability to overcome other teams who have strong D. Eye test would be a better indication.

Points don't always reveal the full picture. Drouin vs Bergeron in the Q for example?

Really? How? The games aren't remotely close in style. Where's the link for you?

Krug is build like a bulldog though. He's maybe just 5'09 but he's at almost 200

Krug is an offensive type and he should get offensive zone starts but if he was a bulldog, wouldn't he be closer to 50/50 like others in zone starts? So far this season, he is 76.4/23.6 in favor of offensive zone starts. That's not normal. Then I look at his -11 rating which should be higher considering usage. Very high offensive zone starts with the worse +/- in their D core? He's not that good and if he is not putting up points with that offensive ability, he's not that good. It's the reason why the Bruins let him walk.

Drouin is 6'-0" and 203 lbs. You would think he would have better ability to win puck battles in traffic right?

Leetch is a pretty decent comp for Hutson style wise, now that I think about it. We can only hope !
Leetch had a better shot and was heavier.

if Lane can put up 60+ points in the NHL in a couple of years, he will prove to be the value of a top-15 pick.

Spurgeon is 5'9" and 167 lbs. and he's better than Krug.
Spurgeon has a career 0.45 ppg. Nothing to sneeze at, but not neceesarily a clear steal at late second round.

Spurgeon has never been an offensive D though why would you expect more points

Spurgeon's value is that he's an elite two-way D-man. He's also really productive 5v5. I don't expect Hutson will ever be that, but the point is that you can be successful with his frame.

That have nothing to do with Hutson and Drug not having the same frame though

He already said he doesn’t want to do his 4 years in college. He’ll do what the habs think is best for him.

Makar is 5’11” 187lbs
Hutson 5’8” 155lbs

3” & 30lbs is not unheard of for young men in their teenage years. And hey don’t get me wrong I’m not hung up on size because he’ll never be crushing people. I’m more concerned about his ability to TAKE a hit. When you’re that small injuries are always a concern.

Hutson has more points than Logan Cooley in less games played
That would sure be a fine thread title on the main board.

I don’t think there is a correlation between size and injuries. Armia is almost always injured and he’s a tank. Edmunson is big and injured, Wideman is not. People always repeat and believe it’s real but I guarantee that size is not the variable determining rate or length of injuries. A lot of it is genetics, style of play, conditioning, luck. Secondly, there are always exceptions to rules. We have absolutely nothing to lose in seeing what happens with this guy. I’m personally super excited in seeing him play and potentially defying the “rules” about what makes an effective defenseman.

My other issue is his point totals to date. Too many goals, not enough assists to translate well to the NHL, in my opinion.

As the season progresses I will hope to see more creativity making the four guys around him more productive.

With his weakish shot, I'm thinking he will not be a strong NHL goal scorer. To fulfill his potential, which is high for sure, he will need to be an elite assist generator at the NHL level. If he can do that, I am not too worried about the defending side of the game, as he has always had good +/- numbers so I trust his instincts and he could be paired with a big partner who is strong defensively.

He finds open lanes well enough; is it his problem if his teammates find open Lane?

He's apparently already tied the goal scoring record for a D+1 dman in the NCAA. He tied one of Fox/Makar and passed the other, can't remember which one. He's still got half a season left even with the world juniors. Goes to show how rare putting up goals as a freshman is since the record is 6.

Hard not to be excited by the stats he's putting up, and he is super entertaining to watch.

If Caufield can become a legitimate sniper, I don't see why Hutson can't be a dynamic offensive defenseman. He will never be a physically dominant guy, but he's never been a physically dominant guy. He will have to be insulated to some degree of course, but it's hard to hit what you can't catch.
