Means nothing. Had a friend who topped out at 5'9" and had the arms of someone over 6-Feet. Helped him in boxing, though...

Same for a friend of mine who was a competitive swimmer and rock climber. Not sure why people have this notion that all humans are equally proportioned therefore they will grow into their big ears, hands feet, limbs......etc. Generally peoples anatomical disproportions remain the same.

Yes generally but for Hutson he said it himself what his doctor told him. Happened for his father and his brother, so it’s in the family.

This is just a claim that he is making and he has every reason to present his bias. I know many short guys who made similar claims about their older siblings/parents/uncles etc. and it did not work out for them at all.

The doctor basic only said that growth is not impossible but for people on here to pretend that is likely is wishful thinking.

I hope the kid grows as well but he would be a fool to count on it.

It's not a claim he invented or something his doctor said just like that, though.

Not verbatim but having a little growth plate left means exactly what I said. Significant growth is unlikely but not impossible, deriving anything other than that from the medical findings is unwarranted optimism. It is quite possible that he grows but it is far more likely to be closer to zero than something career altering.

I mean, an inch or two would be career altering so it's not that much of a jump.

I was 5'10 with one side of the family all being 5'8 or shorter (other side 5'9-6'3 for men with a median of 5'10) and I grew half an inch after 18. It's not that much of a stretch to see him him gain at least 1 inch.

At Hutson height, every millimeter gained will have an impact on his value.

This is a trade you might tell your grand children about.

"So we had this player by the name of Brett Kulak..."

So far it seems like a good deal for both teams.

Kulak is a defensively solid bottom pairing D that can play up and down the lineup. Exactly what the Oilers needed.

And we got a really good prospect.

At 62, that's a gamble you take all day every day. Size means its a stretch that he makes it. But it would not be shocking if in ten years he's the best D from the draft.
Ok let’s calm down, that actually would be pretty shocking

Even like an inch or 2 would be massive.

Him being 5'8 1/4" vs 5'8 1/2" or 5'8 3/4" is almost meaningless as he will very likely still be the smallest defender in the league. Him gaining the 2 inches that he would need to alter his career path is very unlikely.

The growth narrative should be shelved until it actually happens. I am more concerned about him gaining mass, strength and overhauling his backwards skating. Growth would be a huge bonus but people treating it as a likelihood are not living in reality. I am sure Lane will focus on the things he can actually control and work to find a way to transfer his dynamic skillset to the pro game.

I think every 1/4 inch will have more impact than you think, but I agree with the rest.

I like our side of that equation much more despite the risks and tribulations involved with developing a prospect and the challenges about Hutson’s height.

I mean, what is Kulak anyway? I guy with good metrics but a 3rd pairing milquetoast with frequent brain cramps which prompted @Apoplectic Habs Fan to quip in a GDT from December 28th last year, when the Habs were playing Tampa, where Kulak was horrid:

“Is that Kulak or a turnstile?”

One of the best one liners I’ve seen in this forum. Also liked @sheed36 ’s « Clue-lack ».

Love these super high IQ types like Hutson, you just can’t teach what they have.

It sounds like Hutson may have hypothyroidism which would explain the height and delayed bone age. It’s possible he will grow an inch, but it doesn’t really matter. As long as he gains weight/muscle, he should have no issues playing in the NHL. He won’t clear the net but should be able to leverage his size to get better body positioning in short bursts. Smarts for timing, reading the play, body positioning, etc. will be key but he seems adept in that department.

Take from someone on the shorter side that has played people a foot taller than me, it’s entirely possible but it will take a very smart, strong and agile player to make it.

It doesn't sound like that at all. It sounds like he has constitutional growth delay like other men in his family.

Given that both his parents (and brother) are shorter it would be more likely to familial short stature and not constitutional growth delay.

That said, the fact he was also seeing an endocrinologist it is likely he has hypothyroidism which will delay growth, puberty, etc. with no other abnormalities or proportion issues.

If it turns out that he just can't handle bigger forwards in the defensive end, I don't see why he can't play wing and PP on the point. High IQ players are high IQ players. They find a way into the lineup.

Given that both his dad and brother grew after 18 to a height of 5'11", it would be constitutional growth delay (even then, he's not even short enough, but it's the term that applies most closely to his situation according to the bone scans). By definition, it's impossible for him to have familial short stature, as he's 5'8". This is true for the men of his family as they are over the height average of the population, the literal opposite of what familial short stature is. It is extremely unlikely he has hypothyroidism. The short stature, when it happens, manifests itself with a loss of growth velocity and weigh gain, as well as other symptoms, not a skinny, energetic kid, growing at the same pace as the rest of his family did. You have no idea what you're talking about here and I don't understand why you would double down knowing full well that you don't. This isn't the reason he saw an endocrinologist, he just has the money to pay for one for the growth delay, with a draft position in play. If he was an average kid going to college, he wouldn't have had to.

Just curious, why would you say it is not hypothyroidism? Everything you describe matches how it manifests.

What is your reasoning against it being a thyroid issue? (Not that it ultimately matters)

Yes, a man's finger will always fit into his nose. No matter how big the finger he will have nostrils to match.

At Development Camp, he was listed at 5'9" and 148 lbs. So going by BU's profile, he's gained 7 pounds since Development Camp.

But here is where it gets confusing with Hutson's height and weight. Because at various places where he was measured, he's had different results:

NHL Combine: 5'8.25" and 158 lbs
Dev. Camp: 5'9" and 148 lbs
BU's Profile: 5'9" and 155 lbs

So according to Habs and BU, Hutson's grown an inch since the combine. However, when you look at his weight, it looks like he lost 10 pounds between combine and camp and gained 7 from camp to BU.

It makes it seem like measuring and weighting people is cutting-edge science… ridiculous
