Martinez was brought in to be a stop gap vet. It's a 1-year deal. You give up the NMC to bring him in.

The second year on Brodie never made sense though. I don't get what anyone in the Hawks org watched last year to suggest that deal was ever going to work out.

FWIW and playing devils advocate here but I think Vlasic said his best friend on the team is Martinez and his experience helped him out a lot.
