Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

I literally thought it was the other way around and the sharks would have to give away 3 1st round picks to get someone to take half of EK65's contract

Note: I'm a horrible GM

The media is probably sensationalizing it. The ask was probably for "a first, a blue-chip prospect, and a good young roster player" and the media interpreted that as "three first-round picks".

Do we even know who even first reported this ask? It showed up on TNT's broadcast but I don't recall a source listed, and I don't think Seravalli linked to it or cited it, either.

Did one of you all drop this on Twitter and get the rumor started? Because if so, major props to you! :snide::snide::snide:

It could even be something like struggling prospects with first round pedigree or some sort of condition on the first.

Waiter - “did you say you wanted coffee or OJ?”
DW- “right now I’m very happy with the water I have. I think it’s a good, cold cup of water, and I’m excited to continue drinking it”
Waiter- “so you don’t want coffee instead? It’s high grade Java straight from Peru“

DW - “I’m not going to comment at this time “

Out of towner here, noticed Benning's abnormal offensive stats, is he over achieving or looking to have a real breakout season?
He’s been garbage. 100% an instance of a ton of time with him being the only RHD other than EK. You know how people say Karlsson lets in more goals than he scores? That’s wrong obviously but for Benning? Pretty accurate.

Benning is as though you put Karlsson's defensive skills on a poor skater and only gave him a quarter of the offensive talent. He's really bad in his own zone, he gives up rush chances against but can't backcheck fast enough, he's not especially physical.

You’re missing the operative word here, which is two-way. Vlasic at his peak was probably a top-10 defenseman in the league, yes, but he had a glaring weakness which was that he was a black hole offensively. When your effectiveness is limited to two-thirds of the ice, you don’t qualify for my list.

I also completely understand that the lack of high picks has historically contributed to our lack of high end home-grown defensemen, and I never said that it didn’t. I also never said anything negative about the Sharks’ ability to acquire top-end talent. But those two things are exactly my point. Teams don’t win Cups without elite homegrown two-way defensemen picked in the top-15 of the draft.
This is very much revisionist history. No Vlasic wasn’t “talented“ offensively but he was absolutely not a black hole. That term should be reserved for the Niclas Wallin’s and Colin White types. Vlasic has often been a 25-30 point d-man and in his best seasons he would get around 8-10 goals per 82 games with 30-35 points. Combined with how good he was defensively, he absolutely belongs in the top 10 d-men lists.

I feel like people tend to heavily underrate him and even Braun on this board now that it’s been years since their shutdown days and they don’t have the sexy stats to back up how valuable they were.

Wow we have a GM that will actually provide information this is very new
Grier provides words, much like Quinn. But when you break it down, it’s either bullshit or means absolutely nothing.

Grier talks about he doesn’t like tanking and he is a competitive guy - but all his moves suggest he is either tanking (but not great at it) or completely incompetent.

Quinn talks about the importance of effort and uses that as justifying benching Labanc recently, but we watch Couture and Hertl half ass plays on the regular without skipping a shift. I mean, he only said taking Barabanov off the PP in the 3rd against oilers was “his decision” - well, no shit.

Vlasic collected points because he was on the ice with talented offensive forward and played a lot of minutes, that’s it. He has absolutely zero offensive talent. His shot is like a wounded butterfly. He is not dangerous from the point and never has been.

I was the original “Vlasic is a legitimate top pairing defenseman” pusher, original “Vlasic is a legitimate number 1 defenseman” pusher, “Vlasic is the best defensive player in the world” pusher, and “Vlasic belongs on Olympic Team Canada” pusher. I have said, literally in this thread, that Vlasic was a top-10 defenseman in his prime. Please don’t suggest that I have ever underrated Vlasic, or Braun for that matter, whom I was a huge fan of. But the fact of the matter is that Vlasic never created a drop of offense in his life and often murdered the cycle by taking a weak and unscreened shot into the goalie’s chest or by totally whiffing on a pass and failing to keep the puck in the zone.

It doesn’t matter how good defensively Vlasic was for the purpose of my criteria. A star number one two-way defenseman, for the purposes of leading a team to a Stanley Cup, is both elite in their own zone and a serious threat to create goals in the offensive zone. They don’t have to be quite as good defensively as prime Vlasic or quite as good offensively as prime Burns or current Karlsson, but it’s the combination of both aspects to slightly lesser degrees that make them a guy who controls the ice every time they step on, no matter the situation. And that’s what a Stanley Cup contender needs. It’s why Toronto Will never win a Cup while Morgan Rielly is their #1D, Edmonton will never win with Darnell Nurse, etc.

As a GM you cant outright say you're tanking because the casual fanbase will just stop going to games. I just really hope they are stealth tanking and MG isnt dumb. But... we still have no idea haha. At least I dont

Alex Nedeljkovic was just waived by DET. If I’m SJ, I’m sprinting to trade Reimer today and claiming him.
Or just claim him and worry about the way the chips fall after.

You can't just trade Reimer right now without having the guarantee that your back up plan will be picked up by another team.

They don’t have room to claim him without moving Reimer.

They definitely can. Worse comes to worst, call up Dell and then try to get LA to pay to dump Petersen.

Nedeljkovic's numbers aren't too impressive...
Oh he hasn’t been very good in Detroit but I think he can turn it around a bit. Basically same reason I’m looking at Blackwood too. If he turns it around fantastic, you get a goalie for free. If he doesn’t then you let him walk at the end of the year.
