Vlasic-Benning is a top 20 shutdown pairing in the league so far.

Yet there are people here who think Benning is overpaid at 1.25M 🤣

Yet the two of them make enough mistakes where their actual GF% is under water by a lot. You’re fooling yourself if you think they’re a top 20 shutdown pairing with actual results rather than expected.

“actual GF% is under water by a lot” LOL they’ve been outscored 6-5. They’re also starting 3 shifts in the defensive zone for every offensive zone start they get.

It’s amazing that blame for the Sharks’ defensive ineptitude isn’t focused on Ferraro and Simek who get wrecked in third pairing minutes.

There’s no reason to because it isn’t just them like you’re trying to make it out to be. Reality is that Vlasic-Benning are playing above their heads and are still in the negative. The reality is the team is bad and a lot of them will contribute to that. Vlasic-Benning is better than Ferraro-Simek but they’re not a positive.

I might be wrong on this as I haven’t looked at stats and am relying solely on eye test but are we maybe underrating Ferraro’s effect on his partner? Vlasic looked good to start the year and has trailed off a little bit. That trail off started when Ferraro was moved to the third pair. Simek started off pretty bad and when he got Ferraro, he started looking a lot better. Not sure if this is in my head (very possible) or if it’s actually happening. Other thing it might be is Benning and Ferraro switched pairs so maybe it’s Benning being the negative.

Look, Karlsson-Ferraro are also an elite shutdown pair!

Of d-pairs with minim 60 minutes played, they are rated 50th in Goals against per 60 with 2.29. They're behind both Ferraro-Simek (1.87 - 34th) and, the true elite shutdown pair, Megna-Karlsson (1.36 - 14th).

Simek has been up and down almost regardless of who he's with but it's mostly terrible either way. Benning has played a bit better overall lately but he still makes some horrendous blunders that end up in the back of the net. Vlasic is playing some solid defense and limiting his mistakes whereas Ferraro isn't playing well defensively no matter who he's out there with. They're still at a point where they need to pretty much get rid of all the blue liners after Karlsson if they can. The talent deficiency is most obvious on the blue line which is pretty bad considering how the depth up front is about four forwards deep right now.

The gripe I have with Benning isn't the little things that get tracked in advanced stats, it's the major things like @Pinkfloyd pointed out. It's been a dozen+ games and I can think of 3 peewee-level turnovers/bad decisions that have lead to goals against.

I rarely get upset at a D if they get beat by a good play / better player, but when a D continues to make mistakes and not recover (or make up for them in other ways), then they are a problem. If Benning can clean up those bonehead plays, then we're talking a different story

You really do love Benning for some reason, why the focus on such an unimportant player?
Because there were at least two months of nonstop whining about Benning and his contract on here when in reality he’s a good player on a good contract.

Benning is an adequate bottom-pair guy who has the ability to move the puck, which is an attribute lacking in every defenseman not named Karlsson. My issue with Benning is the 4-year term (I know he can be buried without penalty, but when that time comes, will Grier have the courage to do so). The other issue with Benning is that he regularly gets exposed while playing top-4 minutes, but that really is a critique of the whole D-corps. It is not like the Sharks have a lot of options to play tougher minutes.

Hello Sharks fans. Genuine question here. What's the status/chance Joe Thornton plays this year? He's technically not retired, and I believe he was skating with the team during the offseason. The team is rebuilding, and I don't see how it would be a detriment having Joe on the team that most people associate him with. I have to admit that my interest pertaining Thornton is due to him being the last player from the 90's who's not retired. I'm 33 yrs old, but I have to admit, I want someone who played in the 90's to still be playing today! I guess I'm a sentimental fool.

Rumors around the rink is that he's been watching practices with management. Odds are that he'll be joining up with the coaching staff in some capacity. Personally, I don't think he has the legs to keep up with the NHL anymore.

I thought they sold their California home?

Yeah, that makes sense to me. I also think if he really, really wanted to play one more year in the NHL, this is the best and last option. I'm pretty sure Mike Grier said something along the lines of (And I'm paraphrasing), 'It's up to Joe if he wants to play, or be a part of the organization'. I'm just very curious! Also, I agree the legs are shot, but I just don't see anything to lose with him playing out the rest of the season. The legs are gone, the vision has got to be still somewhat there. As a Habs fan, maybe I should start praying for one last run with Saku Koivu, what say you?!

It's not like Kunin or Lindblom have been a coup for Grier either. If you are going to buyout a replacement-level player that is a fit, you have to do better with the cap space than a lateral move at best.
I think we'd be better off with all of them rather than picking and choosing here. If anything, I'd drop Gadjovich and maybe also Gregor at this point for Balcers.
