It's not like Kunin or Lindblom have been a coup for Grier either. If you are going to buyout a replacement-level player that is a fit, you have to do better with the cap space than a lateral move at best.
All three are replacement level so who cares. The difference is Kunin and Lindblom provide what Grier wants from his bottom six and fit the mold of deadline type acquisitions who could potentially be flipped for picks next season. Florida couldn't get anything for Balcers on a league minimum salary but we had posters here chastising Grier for not being able to trade his 1.5Mx2 contract.

I think we'd be better off with all of them rather than picking and choosing here. If anything, I'd drop Gadjovich and maybe also Gregor at this point for Balcers.
I agree in theory. The problem is I don't think the cap works out, or if it does, it does not leave enough room for flexibility.

I think most of the posters here preferred to keep Balcers over trading him or buying him out. This was on the heels of posters being upset about trading a 3rd for Kunin, who was unlikely to get qualified by Nashville anyways, so I don't blame a few posters for being dramatic. Considering players like Sonny Milano were not qualified and available as UFAs, trading Balcers for a positive return was simply unrealistic this past off-season.

I understand the explanation of Grier wanting to "put his stamp" on the team, but when the replacement-level players he brings in are more expensive than the existing replacement-level player, including the expenditure of a mid-round pick, that is open to criticism.

Lindblom has been a huge disappointment for me but I do like the physicality of Kunin even if he does make a lot of boneheaded plays.
I get that he hasn’t scored but this guy is getting a pass from me. To overcome what he did, I am in awe every time I see him on the ice. I figured it would take some time for him to get up to speed.
I’m going to reserve judgement for this season.

Kunin is less of an issue for me as I think he does provide something that this team otherwise lacks (net-front presence on the power play). That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it's something.

Gregor and Gadjovich, though, don't provide anything that is really valuable. Gregor is fast but offensively inept, Gadjovich is physical but inept in every other way.

I hope so. I was expecting more energy from him and granted he did come back from a lot but to me he just doesn’t seem to be doing anything… I guess inspiring for lack of a better word while on the ice. The feel good aspect of his story only goes so far.

and/or a lack of confidence to make the right play without hesitation
He's also spent almost all season playing with linemates who aren't terribly skilled. I'd still like to see Lindblom get a genuine run in the top six, the same way guys like Nieto and Svechnikov have. He's not going to be a huge scorer or drive play on his own, but I think he can get back to being an effective complementary player if alongside others who are more skilled (this was the story of his best days in Philly), and he's a fairly responsible player--partly unnoticed because he's not f***ing up often--so he could hang up there in that regard, too.

He definitely came back from a lot, but I'm a little confused on what you mean by the bolded. Just in regards to the Sharks system? Because this is this 3rd season back from his treatment already, no?

A Karlsson deal would be very hard to make this season with so many teams having cap issues and Erik having his choice anyway. It's more likely a deal happens next summer if the cap rises by 4 million like Bettman suggested it might.

I wonder how much Karlsson's play is due to him selling himself.

As an athlete who was once considered one of the best players in the league, he has pride. I'm sure he wants to prove to people that he's still capable of being great. I doubt it was fun not playing to the level he once had, and now things have fallen into a better place with Burns gone and a more offensive-minded coach, and he's healthy, he can just go out there and be himself. It also helps that he's not killing penalties and getting fewer defensive zone starts, which will limit the amount of shots he blocks (especially from not PK'ing).

Where was his pride the last few years? He is playing amazing this year. Looks like a completely different person. Even if the results weren’t there, if he gave the effort he is giving now during his whole time in teal I wouldn’t hate him. As it stands, I will be very pleased when that pos is off my team.

I think you could very strongly make the case that he had to keep his ego in check with Burns there, and we know that Karlsson works best with his ego unchecked. Kinda like how Malkin has always played "better" when Crosby was injured, Karlsson is now given the keys and he's flooring it.

Burns was "the guy" in all situations. 1st PP QB, 1st pairing D, go-to point option down a goal, etc. Now the offense runs through Karlsson.
