Ferraro would benefit from having a good, traditional defenceman to pair with. Not the hybrid type like Burns, the solely-offensive like EK65 or the geriatric like Vlasic.
I'm not really sure where that player is coming from anytime soon, though, and I'd also prefer that Ferraro is allowed to play on the left side next to a right-shooting defenseman, not another lefty on his off side. Since Benning kind of sucks, that's why my vote is for Karlsson.

This is one of the reasons I wanted the Sharks to claim Phil Myers. He’s showed some promise in Philly and then was injured in NSH. Think he could have been a good partner for Ferraro.

I kinda wanted them to bring back Braun.

I like to think I'm the #2 fan in Braun's fan club (behind Bret Hedican, of course), so I'd have been in favor of that since it's not like we have any right-shooting defensemen in the system ready to go who'd be blocked by him. I was really impressed by Braun's work with the Rangers, playing on his off side in the playoffs alongside a (pretty good) rookie.

So far he's keeping it up this year with Sanheim on the Flyers, and since I expect them to fall off I'm just hoping he once again gets a good trade to a Cup contender at the deadline where he'll get to contribute regularly.

All of that is why I thought he’d have been a worthwhile pickup.

Brandt Clarke and Dylan Guenther have been tearing it up. Eklund pick not looking so good anymore.

If we get a goal scorer ala Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, or Carlsson in this draft I think Eklund is a perfect guy to compliment them though. He won't be a dominant force on his own, but can be an amazing set up guy. Even if he plays games this year he could thrive next to a guy like Meier who shoots everything.

Yes he is "It's a no brainer"
It’s been one season where Eklund was bounced around more than a check from a homeless person. You know who else had horrible D+1 seasons? Timo Meier, Erik Karlsson.

Also despite getting bounced around so much, Eklund still scored 14 points in 29 games against much better competition than Clarke and Guenther. Genuinely have no idea how you can say this in ONE f***ING SEASON.

Guenther is already playing in the NHL.
And it was a mistake to take Timo over Mikko Rantanen
You must be lost or new here as this is the land of projections

What the hell man? You know who else is in the NHL on Arizona? McBain, Macceli, O’Brien, Fischer, Bjugstad, Hayton, Ritchie, Kassian. None of these guys are good. And these are just the forwards. Just because a joke of a franchise called up a guy doesn’t mean much. You must be new here. Like f*** off with this shit. You wanna back up your point at all or you just going to be an overall asshat?

Except Guenther has been really good. It's not like he's some charity case getting games for the hell of it. The goal he scored last night was filthy.

Too funny.

Torrey Mitchell scored absolutely highlight reel goal of the season candidates too. It’s 5 games in. Let’s pump the brakes a bit on calling people mistakes in the draft. There was talk of Eklund going 1st overall. Give him more than 13 games in North America.
Too funny.
Got it. Overall asshat. Congrats!

Comparing Guenther and his pedigree to Torrey Mitchell is a joke. Nobody is writing off Eklund but it’s entirely possible his impressive draft year was a bit of an outlier due to various factors. He was not thought of as a top five pick contender going into that year IIRC. He should still develop into a good top six forward but Guenther and especially Clarke are tracking to be higher impact guys.

Eklund was thought of as a top 5 pick (kind of). It was one of those though like Leo Carlsson this year where it’s like he COULD break into the top 3 and some people have him there but that’s not necessarily the consensus. Now a part of that was because no one really jumped out from that draft.

I think the biggest thing is that it’s WAY too early to claim anyone is a mistake to draft over another guy. The vast majority of these guys (apart from the top 3) have less than 10 NHL games played. Junior numbers are great and all but it’s very hard to compare them especially CHL vs SHL. I get your goal argument with Eklund but he also put up 14 points in 29 games in 3rd line (if I remember right) minutes against men. He also was injured for a part of that, was getting settled for most of that, and was on an absolute garbage team. Chekhovich, Dahlen, Chmelevski all tracked to be better than they were. None of them are in the NHL and only one of them has any chance of coming back to the NHL and mostly in a bottom 6 role.

It seems to me for Eklund that it's a bit of a dam breaking thing IMO. He's so close to realizing his potential but a combination of luck and hesitance has held him back since his draft year. Personally sending him back to Sweden was very dumb, and it never made sense to me. Maybe he wasn't ready, or maybe he was, but he had just gotten his feet wet, his confidence going, and then everything changed again. He barely played for a year with a combination of poor scheduling, poor useage and injuries. Now he's...fine but doesn't have that same confidence he did watching him in his draft year. It's almost a night and day thing and that sucks.

Dylan Guenther has 3 points in 5 games for the Yotes. His 2 goals are both on the PP. So he has 1 assist through even strength. He is also shooting at 22%, so I highly doubt that is sustainable.

So, let's look at some advanced metrics. His on-ice expected goals is 35% with his off-ice expected goals being 36.9%. So Arizona is more likely to score with him off the ice. The funny thing is he has good corsi and fenwick (2nd best on the Yotes) numbers - which means there is a lot of non-dangerous shots going on when he is on the ice.
