So can someone give me a TL;DR on what is going on with Karlsson? Last thing I remember seeing was that he publicly wanted a trade..but I see more people now under the assumption that he will be here?

He's been asked a lot of questions by reporters lately and he made it clear that he still wants out but he said that he's also content with playing in San Jose if we can't find a trade for him.

Most of us thought he was going to be traded at the draft. There were rumors of many teams wanting to trade their first pick, possibly in play was Seattle's pick, Pittsburgh at 14, Canuck's pick. Draft was really deep this year so it turned out that no draft picks were traded at the draft by any GM this time. Anticipation and excitement took a nose-dive. Now we don't ever know when he will get traded and so we're just going to pencil him in.

Anyone who watched Bystedt know what his timeline might be? I really hope he plays in the AHL this year but from everything I’ve gleaned it’s likely he’s back for one more season in the SHL and then will get a legitimate chance to make the team next summer.

Next summer is probably when the upswing to the rebuild begins. One year of Eklund, hopefully two of Guschin, Bordeleau, Robins can make the team in a significant way and ideally Bystedt and Havelid coming in to challenge for spots. I can see Grier starting to sign real players and not Bobby Fisticuffs at that point.
I'd guess that Bystedt does a year in SHL again this year. Plays in the AHL with the Cuda in 2024-25. Gets promoted to the NHL whenever Grier trades Sturm at the TDL in 2024-25 to a contender. That 2024-25 timing should probably coincide with Smith as well and both of them break into the league around the same time. Should also have answers on Eklund's future at that point with 2 years in the NHL under his belt.

Summer 2025 is the earliest that I think we see Grier get a little aggressive in terms of building this thing back up. Will have Smith, Eklund, Bystedt, and Celebrini (hopefully) to build the forward group around and then Muk and Thrun on the back-end. Find a way to get your hands on a RH shooting puck mover (cough cough Scott Morrow cough cough) and the foundation starts to look really strong (which allows you to go shopping for some instant impact type players in the summer).

And next years draft apparently outside of celebrini, is defensemen heavy. So finding another 1st would help the defense also if we do land celebrini.

Yeah, I think we absolutely need to come away with a high end defensive prospect next draft. Mukh, Havelid, Cagnoni and Thrun are a good start and already miles and miles ahead of what we had last summer, but we need a guy who has 1D potential.

Guessing the Sharks elect arbitration with Gawanke and open up this window. Know Grier mentioned he did not plan to buy anyone out, but Labanc still being on the roster and looking untradeable makes me think that there needs to be a plan to move out that contract (same goes for Simek).

Why buy out Labanc? They are not using the cap space so why create a cap hit next year. He could probably be traded away at the deadline for nothing.

It’s not like he is taking spots from others who might deserve it since they have shown to scratch him multiple times.

I get he didn’t live up to the potential but let’s not let buy him out for no reason.

We can keep Labanc, but I think Simek should be bought out. We have too many defensemen and the cap penalty is negligible. Simek has no market and no future.

Because the penalty is inconsequential and it creates more flexibility to take money back in a Karlsson trade. We’ve been trying to trade him for 3 years and nothing has happened. Let the guy go and attempt to resurrect his career somewhere he’s wanted on a cheap deal. We don’t need the space next year anyway.

Much simpler to just waive Simek and bury him in the minors.

The reason to buy either of Labanc or Simek is to save on salary. Buying out Labanc saves close to $2M, Simek $650K. When you are tanking, cap hits don't matter; salaries paid do. Limit the owner's losses.

I would keep Labanc and hope he posts a good enough season on a team that needs top-six forwards that you can trade him at the deadline with retention. He becomes more attractive to acquiring teams when his contract expires after the season so they aren't committed to him beyond this season.

Dont worry about it
I think this is one of the types of moves you make when you’re in the position the sharks are. Put a claim in on a former top 10 pick who needs a change. Virtually no risk for what the payoff could be. Could end up a top 6/9 piece for the future or you could flip him for another asset down the line.

He’s not that cheap. 1.825 for a guy with a career high of 24 points. Just for reference Gadjovich played 5 more NHL games last year and scored the same amount (7 points). Kunin played 1 more game and scored 6 more points.
He only has 1 year left though? Either way you're probably right.

Two actually. Ends after 24-25. I thought the exact same thing you did. Then saw the contract and immediately thought NEVER MIND!

If we move Labanc then maybe but honestly I also don’t really see a spot in the top 9 for him. Eklund, Barabanov, Duclair are all locks for the top 9. Peterson and Zetterlund should get spots. Then you’d have a battle on that last spot between Labanc, Kunin, and a few other younger guys. If we took a chance on him, I wouldn’t be upset at all but I also wouldn’t be upset about not taking a chance at him if that makes sense.

(Was going to post this as a reply in the free agent frenzy thread, but it's going down an OT tangent)

I wish the Sharks in 23-24 would just ice a lineup full of their youngsters and prospects. That way, it's a total and complete tank (because you're icing a team that is less than NHL ready), but you can defend it as the "youth movement" while also giving your youth actual NHL time, and having them develop under AC Warsofsky. I feel better having the kids with Warsofsky than John McCarthy. They can also grow with him and have that be the core in place once Quinn is inevitably replaced down the line by Warsofsky. And this is a lot more interesting as a Sharks fan to watch than icing a team with the Kunin's, Lindblom's, Labanc's and Benning's of the world, even as the losses pile up:

(Dump/bury anyone not listed here, Karlsson traded of course and I'm not considering that a trade might yield 1 or 2 people to slot into here)

Eklund-Hertl-Barabanov
Duclair-Couture-Zetterlund
Peterson-Bordeleau-Kaut
Gushchin-Sturm-Coe (rotate in others from the Barracuda during the season like Cardwell and Robins)

Muk - Ferraro
Thrun - Gawanke
Vlasic - Burroughs

Chrona/Makiniemi as starter (whoever wins out at camp), with a 55/45 split with Blackwood
Blackwood

Bystedt play with the Cuda this year

Edited: Gawanke replacing Havelid
Thrun-Gawanke would be a VERY intriguing pair

Hertl could protect his Czech countryman Zadina like he protected Czechman Kaut last season. Hertl would also continue to shelter little Eklund. Wow we ask a lot of Hertl don't we!

Nothing has changed since the buyout window so I don't know why we would suddenly buy Labanc out now. It's his last year so we might as well keep him. I'm probably overly optimistic that maybe we get something for him at the deadline.
