Vlasic is a lifer... He's probably not an asshole but there needs to be 1 and only 1 of his personality type in the locker room... He's got to balance the toxic positivity of others

Couture is a lifer... For what reason I don't know, maybe he feels pressure to stay because of the C

Hertl is not unhappy enough to force his way out, but probably feels like he was bullshitted re: the team's rebuilding plans much like EK65 until recently

Buying out Vlassic doesn’t make any sense if not trying to compete. He isn’t a complete locker room cancer. He is a funny guy with a very dry sense of humor which can often make him seem like an asshole to outsiders but most every player lists him as the funniest guy on the team when asked. That type of guy might not be perfect for a cup contender but he is still a professional who has played 1000 games at a high level and just had his best season since 2019. He played better than most of the other options they have on the left side so he still forces prospects to outplay him to gain ice time and if a prospect can’t out play him for ice time he is either not ready or not going to be good.
Any player that still thinks he is playing good hockey, when they are as bad as Vlasic has been for 5 years now. That type of player is not good for a young team, as it shows the younger players that they can slack off and there are no consequences.

Vlasic actually had a very solid year last year. At his current stage, he's still probably the 3rd/4th best D on the Sharks. I dislike Vlasic the person more than some of you, I remember meeting him years ago and him being fairly assholelish, and he's always given off that vibe, but his on-ice play is probably the one thing that isn't a problem with him.

On a side note, I can't wait for Karlsson the person to finally be gone. You know we are really down as a fanbase when arguably the most skilled player they've ever had essentially said "I know we've had no chance to make the playoffs these last few years so I haven't tried" and the fans are like "YES Erik! Go get a cup!".

Can being over the cap keep a team out of the ploffs?

EDIT: I guess not, I feel like I remember the Sharks being over a bonus cap or something and having a penalty the next year on the cap or something. Wasn't sure.

Seems like that should be a thing.

Not a good look, but on the other hand, at least he is honest about it...others do that same shit and act like that's not what's happening lol
Nothing wrong with what Karlsson said here. However, there is the implication that he is content playing 82 games and not playing playoffs HERE IN San Jose (implying that we have a country club going on here lol) which doesn't bode well in trying to force Couture or Vlasic via force or shaming

I believe the implication is not about it being a country club but more that they’re not playing games that matter, such as playoff games.

I thought this was well known. The captain of the hockey team has said multiple times as long as he's having fun he's happy.

Karlsson is only saying what everyone else in his position would be thinking. You can’t criticize guys like Couture and Vlasic for being content to ride out the rest of their careers on a non-contender and then in the same breath turn around and criticize Karlsson for wanting to play for a contender. He hasn’t bad-mouthed the Sharks, he didn’t publicly requested a trade (it came out that the Sharks wanted to trade him before it came out that Karlsson wanted to be traded), and it seems like he’s motivated to work with the Sharks to get a deal done.

Anyone upset with Karlsson for what he’s said today is just looking for a reason to be upset with him because they never liked Karlsson to begin with.

Why would anyone be upset with Karlsson? He actually did the Sharks a favor by having an elite season last year. Trading him now should actually get the Sharks some decent assets, as opposed to last year with Grier just gave Burns away for free. The Sharks are going to suck for another 3+ years. No reason for him to wait that out.

Edit: Yes I know that by doing that he may have cost the Sharks Bedard. Silver lining and stuff...

I think our best hope now is that Karl wins the Norris and runners-up the Lindsey, inflating his value and making him more attractive to teams. If Grier can find a sweetspot of retention that isn't crippling but also opens the door to other teams, he can start a bidding war and get more assets.

Though, i've come around to what @Hodge was saying earlier: the cap savings are the asset returned in a Karlsson trade. I'm on board with that so long as they use that cap space to accumulate more assets.

Love the conversation that was going on here.
The thing with Karlsson is that he was just the wrong big piece for success.
Scenario in 2018-2019 where Sharks get one of Stone, O'Reilly or even by some miracle Blues trade Pietroangelo (or that caliber of a player) in 2018-19... we are talking serious cup contender. (Jones is the only thing in the way of that)

Karlsson had an amazing season that we will never forget, once in a lifetime kind of performance almost.
BUT we need to have a TEAM not individuals, we need TWO WAY not one way.
That's why MG has a very important job right now.

It will always infuriate me that DW and company traded for the best Defenseman in the league at the time and proceeded to stick him on the second pairing and run a system that does not in any way take advantage of his skills.

Why?

Because Burns point shots being tipped by Pavelski is cool.

So dumb.

Blue Jackets Athletic guy Aaron Portzline reporting Sharks and Blue Jackets have had conversations about Hertl.

If Grier can move that contract with no retention it significantly improves our long term outlook IMO. I don't even care what we get in return. We would have no money on the books beyond 2027 and maximum flexibility to build around Eklund, Carlsson/Smith and the 2024 and 2025 1st rounders.

There's 2 players in Edmonton who will be UFA in 2026 and 2027 respectively. We know Hasso isn't afraid of throwing big money to big name players...

Hertl and couture for 3rd overall.

Also with more players every year feeling emboldened to ask out or turn down extensions, you never know who will be available.

Hertl and couture for 3rd overall.
It would probably be closer to Hertl and Couture for 4th overall. As in, us giving them that pick to take those contracts. Hertl with no retention for one of their surplus defense prospects like Ceulemans or Svozil looks fair to me.

I think EK65 will definitely be traded. Totally respect what he's saying, but that's not the type of thing you say if you expect to ride it out. He also rightly sounds appreciative of SJ for his big payday. Hopefully he'll remember us when he's at 6.5M on Boston holding the cup lol
