Meh. I think of all the long-term vets we have, he’s the one I don’t mind keeping around. Vlasic I firmly believe will be bought out next year and I do think we trade EK and Logan this season. Hertl seems like someone who would be good for the kids in development even if his contract is expensive.
And we do need to keep one of the good veterans and he is one of them.

Vladar is going to cost a 2nd at a minimum so the 4th convo seems like wishful thinking. I’m not giving up a 2nd for him personally. We’re not ready to address our goaltending and I don’t want another Hill situation.
If the leaked reports are that the Flames expect to get a 2nd, it means no one is offering a second.

My guess is it turns out they get a third or a second in a trade down situation, but both of those are more than I think the Sharks should give.

It seems like Couture wants to stay here.

I suspect that Hertl might be willing to leave. If I correctly remember, he wanted to compete.

There’s almost always a GM that is willing to overpay for a goalie in Vladar’s position where they’re getting hyped. Hill had better numbers but similar age and experience and landed a 2nd. It will probably happen here and I wouldn’t want to pay a 3rd for him either. They need to shed their dead weight and build depth among their skaters before they go out and spend assets on a goalie. Just sign free agents or take dumps in trades and let your drafted goalies develop. Wait for your team to build up.

I can’t possibly see us being able to trade someone nearing 30 with 7 more years at 8 million and an injury history.

You can sign a couple of Nico Sturms for 2 million apiece every summer to provide veteran leadership for the kids. Hertl’s contract is even more harmful than Karlsson, Vlasic or Coutures because Hertl will still be on the books for 8 million a year when Eklund, Smith/Carlsson, the 2024 1st rounder and in all likelihood the 2025 1st rounder are on their second contracts. We’ll be lucky if he’s even a passable 3C by then.

If we could dump Hertl for future considerations with no salary retained, I would do that in a second. It would be irresponsible not to.

Cap is going up, and the whole no-risk/no-reward thing is real.
Then he better ball out next year.

If we didn’t have hertl on the books I’d be down for that, but he is.

If we could dump him for free with no retention, I’d Consider it.

He'll still have a 3 team trade list so unless one of those teams is willing to take him we're stuck. And it's pretty easy for his agent to identify 3 teams with no cap space and/or no need for Hertl. We can't even. buy him out because there's a signing bonus in every year of the contract.

As someone who painfully watched the Flames last season, Vladar is worth a flyer for a 3rd. He was way more stable in net than Markstrom. I wouldn't mind a Makiniemi/Vladar tandem next year if we are really moving Kahk.

I tend to agree with value as it relates to Vladar. I just don’t think we’re the team that ought to do it. We’re in the we should either get paid to take a goalie, part of a Karlsson return, or free agent phase of how we should address goaltending. We’re not in the paying for it part until we feel we have a reasonably competitive team on our hands.

I feel like keeping Hertl or Couture with the rookies is a good idea for veteran presence, but I feel players like Vlasic are not good for the locker room. It's not the best influence to be playing like 7th D, making 7mil and what I've heard he is still pretty vocal guy. That could demoralize a lot of the hard working young players.
(Pretty similar to the Martin Jones buy-out)
Yes, pretty hard to make any deal involving Vlasic. Only one I could think of is Vlasic (50%) for future considerations or a buy-out.

What do think we could get for Kakhonen? It's been a revolving door of goalies the last few years. Hopefully we find a tandem and stick with it through the rebuild years. I'm a little nervous after hearing chatter that we may draft a goalie late first or early second.

Bury him in the AHL and tell him to stay home.

I don’t expect anything for him unless he has a good year and can be rented for maybe a 4th? I’m content with the revolving door until we can put a good team together.

I think since we are rebuilding and it's going to be a long process, it's really important for MG to focus on the locker room through these couple of years. No divas aloud.
For example I like the bromance of Eklund/Bordeleau, more of that kind.
I want that "I will through a wall for my brother" attitude.
I think this will hard task since we have big salary players that either don't want to play here because rebuild (EK65) or don't contribute (Vlasic, Labanc)
I feel like Hertl and Couture at least want to be here, so keep them until otherwise or you get tons of assets for them.

Draft top talent as much as you possibly can (1st round), sign veteran players for cheap, use some later round picks to trade if you find potential young players (a la Thrun, Peterson etc.) and build a group that will want to play together no matter what is the situation. Once again no divas around.

If it was this easy I would be a GM haha, but let's raise our glasses for hope!

Buying out Vlassic doesn’t make any sense if not trying to compete. He isn’t a complete locker room cancer. He is a funny guy with a very dry sense of humor which can often make him seem like an asshole to outsiders but most every player lists him as the funniest guy on the team when asked. That type of guy might not be perfect for a cup contender but he is still a professional who has played 1000 games at a high level and just had his best season since 2019. He played better than most of the other options they have on the left side so he still forces prospects to outplay him to gain ice time and if a prospect can’t out play him for ice time he is either not ready or not going to be good.
