Does Auston Matthews have any actual ties to NorCal other than being born here?

Not sure any goalie is worth getting right now until the defense is fixed
Matthews moved to Arizona at two months, so he has no ties to California outside of the trivia of being born here.

I'd agree on goalies, too - if someone wants to pay us to get one, sure, I'm happy to do that, but I don't want to send out anything of value to get one. I am also fine with a Reimer-type veteran free agent to split time with Kahkonen - all that costs us is money and cap space, as long as they're not too expensive.

Why not? Either he bounces back and you get a solid goalie or he's the new tank commander. Unless the cost is ridiculously high, it's definitely worth it.
I think Hart is just as much of a gamble as Hill or Kahkonen or Makiniemi has been. I don't think he's been particularly good, even in consideration to the team he was on, and he would be expensive to acquire.

If we go outside the org for a goalie at all, I'd rather see the Sharks pick up Matt Murray and whatever else it will cost the leafs to get rid of him. We only need the 40 or so games he'll be healthy for, and we don't care if he sucks

Hart has many more games under his belt than any of these. More of a track record to focus on,
Hart would be a goalie I’d go after if we were competing. I’d only trade for a goalie if we’re being paid to do so or as part of a Karlsson return as a sort of cap dump. Otherwise, I’d just sign a UFA or just let one of our younger goalies backup Kahkonen.

I really wonder if PHI would have interest in Karlsson. Hart, Farabee, DeAngelo and LA 1st for Karlsson?

Agreed 100%. If we were two years further in the “rebuild” i would want to make an offer, but not now.

Think Murray more likely than Hart. Think SJ may be involved in the Hart deal given the rumblings that TOR might be in on him and need to send Murray's money out the door (Philly took Petersen so they don't have a spot for it in theory).

SJ - Matt Murray + 28th Overall (TOR)
TOR - Carter Hart + 6th rounder (SJ)
PHI - 36th Overall (SJ) + 2024 3rd Rounder (TOR)

Toronto would basically get Hart for Murray, 1st, and 3rd which would be pretty fair deal I think given cap dump of Murray.
I think Philly would need more than that. But more for us, why should we take in a cap dump just to move up 8 spots? Even in this draft that's not enough due to take on 6 million cap.

I don’t think they do want to rebuild. Briere said they wanted to overhaul their D and Friedman said they wanted to retool.
Ferraro does seem like a guy that they'd bring into Philly.

Carter Hart is a stud. At his age most goalies still haven't even established themselves in the NHL. He's performed like an above-average starter in 3 of 5 seasons and isn't even in his prime yet. Before his awful COVID season, which now looks like a crazy anomaly, he was being talked about as Team Canada's Olympic starter.
I think Hart is mostly just okay though and is going to require the one thing that I am wholly unwilling to do for a goalie (long-term high dollar contract without being elite). His expected goals against was 110.8 at ES last year and his actual goals against at ES was 114. In his 5 seasons, he's yet to flip that to where he had fewer actual goals against the xGA.

He's about a league average goalie and not someone that is worth giving up a 1st rounder and paying out a long-term extension for when his deal expires after this season. Anyone giving up the rumored haul that Philly is looking for (supposedly a pair of 1st rounders) is going to be very unhappy with their investment.

Yeah I’d agree on Ferraro 100%. I wonder if there’s something around Ferraro+ for Hart+? I don’t know honestly.

Speculates that Gregor may be up for arbitration win too rich for Sharks perception of player, so they might not qualify him.

Not sure we should be worried about cap hit on Gregor this offseason. If he gets something asinine like $2M in arbitration, pay it and retain a portion and still trade him at the TDL for a return. Or qualify him and trade him before arb (even if that lowers his trade value). Or finally, sign him to a weird 5 year deal at like $1.85M per year since Tampa Bay will assuredly shower you with 1st rounders for a guy like that in 1.5 years time.

Gregor isn't actually any good - he's a poor man's Matt Nieto - and anything more than $1.5M is going to sap any trade value he might have. I don't actually have a problem with not qualifying him.

would do this in a heartbeat for me. Removes like 13 million in cap space and gets 2 firsts and knies.

I actually wanted the Sharks to draft Blackwood as he was projected 3rd round and that was our goalie round, but he ended up drafted 2nd round and we drafted Robinson in the 3rd in 2015.

They have 18 million this offseason to spend if they lost muzzin and Murray's contracts.

They may want to resign some of the UFA's though and until they figure out Austin matthews trade or extension, I can't see them going for this
Mathews extension or trade would not be hindered by this move at all, in 2024-25 they have 51 million of cap space.
