But Vlasic shouldn't be active, which is the issueKarlsson needs a D partner that basically does nothing but stay in position and hit. Vlasic is a bit too active for that.

Vlasic has always been more active than you would think from a defensive D, he's just not as good at it anymore. But Vlasic shouldn't be active, which is the issue
Yeah but his ego is huge, so that'll never change. We just ride out the awful contract while rebuilding and call it a day lolBut Vlasic shouldn't be active, which is the issue
This is sort of my problem with Quinn. As someone who watches and follows a lot of Rangers games, I always struggled when he coached them because I liked him in interviews, the announcers clearly did too, and now with the Sharks it's the same--and I enjoyed watching his system, even as it brought about added failure this year, more than Boughner's.I have to say, reading Quinn’s post-season interview - I really like the guy. I can’t tell if he’s a good coach exactly, but I think he’s actually a really good dude who is honest and open with his players. He has a real teacher quality to him and I know he has a reputation of being bad with young guys, but I really haven’t seen that here and I think he may actually be a pretty good guy to have for this particular Sharks team. Especially as we get even younger.
Seems like the expectation when he was first hired in NY was to develop with a rebuilding team a la Bednar but they got lucky with Panarin and what not and he was forced into being a Cup contending coach almost immediately. That seemed to be the gist of the story when they talked to him about it last summer. This is sort of my problem with Quinn. But from everything I've seen, he just has trouble succeeding (relative to what he has to work with) with his ideas/approaches as a coach, at least at the NHL level. I don't know what it is. I'd love to see some good systems breakdowns this offseason from Sharks writers, but then it almost feels futile, because it's hard to imagine that Quinn will still be coaching this team the next time it's good.
I also sort of don't mind (for now) that he's coaching this group as it's struggling. The constant underperformance is good for draft positioning, and the style seems to be one that could be good for young guys to learn if they want to compete in the modern NHL game (and I don't feel like he buried the kids, not relative to other NHL coaches, at least).

When he was at his best he barely knew anything but the blueline or the defensive zone. It has only been the past few years where for some reason he drastically changed his style of play.Vlasic has always been more active than you would think from a defensive D, he's just not as good at it anymore.
Vlassic and EK both play better when they have a partner who will go into the corner and take the hit. Braun with Vlassic, Dillon/Middleton/Megna with EK.When he was at his best he barely knew anything but the blueline or the defensive zone. Except they were tried together and Vlasic got butthurt and tried to become an offensive D and killed every play with stupid decisions.Vlassic and EK both play better when they have a partner who will go into the corner and take the hit. Braun with Vlassic, Dillon/Middleton/Megna with EK.
That is the only thing I can think of why they don’t work because based on everything else they should work perfectly together.
The worst goaltending in the entire league statistically is also another.Hard to judge quinn with the team makeup as it is and the sea change in philosophy
This makes me think the plan is to ride out the bad contracts and well tank

I still don’t understand why they let Joe Will sign Hertl to an 8 year contract before hiring a GM when I see Grier say stuff like this. The Filip Chytil + a 1st trade that was being offered by Rangers fans last year would’ve looked pretty good right now.
I wonder if Hertl ends up a Boston Bruin in a couple years, once Krejci and Bergeron hang up the skates.I still don’t understand why they let Joe Will sign Hertl to an 8 year contract before hiring a GM when I see Grier say stuff like this. Love to hear this.
I think that Grier knows we’re in for another couple of tough years. It looks like almost a certainty that Karl will be traded, but Couture, Vlasic, and Hertl will stick around. I think getting Eklund and Thrun into the lineup full time will be entertaining. Let Gushchin start in the AHL but promote him quickly if he earns it, same with Mukhamadullin.
I’m extremely curious what they’ll do about goaltending. I tend to agree with Masiak that we’re pretty lucky to be even this high in the draft; if not for literally the worst goaltending in the league by a good margin, we’d probably be drafting ~10th instead of where we are. The fact that we were able to out-tank the likes of Montreal, Philadelphia, and Arizona is somewhat impressive if I’m being honest; there’s no way we’re as bad as them other than goaltending.
If the plan is to tank another year, then I think you have to go for Kahkonen/backup. Fixing the goaltending would be the easiest way to improve this team significantly; if Grier doesn’t, then we know he’s dedicated to building the right way.
Honestly? Replace Lindblom with Raska and I’m sold.I think he’s likely going to try Tanko and Makiniemi, but we’ll see.
And yeah, I also like his other quote about the prospect pool being “okay” (he’s so unimpressed) and I imagine he’s going to be working hard this summer trying to bring in more prospects/young guys that are ready-ish.
I kind of love this lineup:
Eklund/Guschin - Hertl - Petersen
Guschin/Eklund - Couture - Barabanov
Gregor - Sturm - Bordeleau
Lindblom - Lorentz - Zetterlund
Thrun - Karlsson
Ferraro - Knyzhov
Vlasic - Benning
…and Muhk gets games or takes a spot if he’s good enough.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a bottom 5 team, but I think it’s kind of a fun, young team to watch.
Letting Joe Will anywhere near hockey decisions is negligent. Him and Becher should be excised from the organization.I still don’t understand why they let Joe Will sign Hertl to an 8 year contract before hiring a GM when I see Grier say stuff like this. The new nick name vlasic orr is here for a reason, vlasic got paid and tried to become a offensive defenseman which obviously did not work as he is one of the worst puck handling defenseman in the league.Vlassic and EK both play better when they have a partner who will go into the corner and take the hit. Braun with Vlassic, Dillon/Middleton/Megna with EK.

Full year of top 6 Petersen is going to be great, I would love to see how he fits.I think he’s likely going to try Tanko and Makiniemi, but we’ll see.
