What do we think about buying out Simek this off-season? With Knyzhov coming back, Vlasic and Ferraro likely here to stay, MacDonald signed for cheap and multiple young guys knocking on the door, I just don’t see the space for him. It would save us 1.3M next year and then only cost 0.65M the season after.
We could do that, or just waive him if he's not injured enough to just keep on IR. We shouldn't need the cap space either year, though.

I mean that’s a part of the rest of the season. Shakir, Okhotiuk, Thrun give them NHL and see what happens. Again they cannot be worst than Ferraro.
Sorry but this whole argument is completely idiotic. So you're saying that because Mario has a 5v5 CF of 46% a ECAC player and a 21 year old playing in the KHL can't possibly be worse? How can that possibly be logical? It's entirely possible (and most likely true) that Mario is better than both of those players right now. If you want numbers, Mario is putting up on a horrible Sharks team:
- 49.6 5v5 xG%
- 49.6 5v5 SCF%
- 51.6 5v5 HDCF%
Okay dispute them because you haven’t. At all. You’re just sitting there with your finger up your butt saying that I’m wrong.
Wow I just got secondhand embarrassment from reading this.

You can claim secondhand embarrassment all you want. That’s real cute bud. f*** off with that.

Unless I’m mistaken (which is possible because I’m still getting used to what every single advanced stat is) all of those are offensive stats that you just used for a defensive D. Ferraro is a horrible player that gets caved in and is consistently out of position.

Here’s the thing:
Ferraro gives up more shot attempts while he’s on the ice, gives up more shots on net while he’s on the ice, gives up more goals, has a higher expected goals against, gives up more scoring chances, gives up more high danger scoring chances while he’s on the ice. Yes a part of that is team quality but you can’t sit there and say it all is. Ferraro is a replacement level third pairing D at best signed for multiple years at way too much.

I am literally begging you to stop saying “that’s cute bud” every time someone disagrees with you. It makes you sound 16.

Again put me on ignore if you don’t like the way I respond. I literally do not care.

I can easily flip this around on you. You can easily put me on ignore.

If we end up needing the cap space next year, I would rather buy Kunin out. Saves 2.5M next year and only costs 0.5M the season after.

Sharks have so many guys who realistically are bottom 6 or bottom pair guys. It’s insane. I forgot Kunin even existed.

Buyout priority this offseason: Labanc > Vlasic > Simek. I thought the limit was three but it seems like there are workarounds if that is the limit. Buying out Simek would be as dumb as buying out Balcers I'd think.

I could be entirely wrong but I don’t believe there’s any sort of buy out limit. Labanc is a good shout. Would cost like 805k this year and 2M next. I don’t love the 2M next year but it doesn’t really matter.

Vlasic is a bit different. I don’t think it’s worth it to buy him out this year. Right now his contract is done 25-26. Still 3 years but we likely won’t be competitive in that time and no raises in that time (except maybe Eklund). His buyout extends how long he’s on our cap to 28-29. 1.5M cap hit next year, 4M the year after, 5 the year after that, and then 1.7 for the next 3 years. I don’t think we will necessarily be competitive in that time but if we get a high pick this year, we likely will need to pay him in that timeframe.

Regarding Simek’s health, I didn’t realize it was that bad until after I posted. LTIR is another good shout if possible.

There are no buyout limits, save your cap space and budget.

We're aren't competing the next 3 years. No point in gaining cap space we won't be using while hindering us when we might actually have a chance to have a good team. Especially if Grier actually trades Erik Karlsson.

If we aren't competing in three years then buying someone out with one year left doesn't impact that capability since the penalties will be expired during that three year period.

I would wait and see if we win the draft lotto and if Karlsson wants to stick it out to see if Bedard is the real deal. If that's the case, I don't mind trying to maximize cap efficiency for putting a competing team together. I feel you can be more efficient with cap space during a rebuild too by buying out someone like Labanc. The cap savings are pretty big and can be used to get someone much better.

Can we sticky this post for whenever the discussions about buyouts are brought up?

Not sure how it'd be hindering. Like he said, the Sharks won't be competing, Labanc's buyout is completely off the books in 2 years, and Vlasic would technically be (like 1.9m still there, that's not hindering at all) off in 3. Pinning a contradictory statement would be..... a choice. Having a negative influence in Vlasic off the team is a win itself. Hell, if there's no buyout limit, Lindblom should be bought out too.

Hopefully Grier is aware of this possible hinderance and he avoids any retention deals! /s
