It's Steven Lorentz all over again. "OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS PLAYER" "...Kay."
I actually love Lorentz  he’s been fantastic on our fourth line this year and PK post Nieto trade. He was does not make losing Burns any easier or really add much value to the Burns trade despite that.

Zetterlund in NJD was a good complimentary player. Issue is he went from complimenting a top 10ish center to complimenting Hertl who has looked better but was pretty checked out. I missed last nights game because I decided drinking was better than watching the Sharks so that statement might not apply to last night. Hopefully Zetterlund can start figuring something out though.

I mean his analytics were good, but you have to think he benefited alot from who and where he was playing.
I also think he got hot and cooled down, but his analytic numbers may not have caught up with his true talent levels. I think he's just a bottom-six forechecker - useful, but not especially good or important.

Zetterlund is a F1 trying to fill in as a F3. He hasn‘t been put into a position to succeed. Easy to blame Quinn but the only top 6 F3 he has left is Couture and he’s matching against the other teams best players with a wing from the Devils press box and a wing from the Leafs press box. I’m still hopeful that Zetterlund can be much better than we are seeing right now.

I think it’s very unfair to judge Zetterlund on this garbage team that’s sort of checked out for the year. He’s also very young and trying to figure out a new system, etc - and it sounds like he’s been getting better each game. He also may just not work well with Hertl - I’d honestly like to see him with Couture as a better (I hope) Eyssimont.

Keep in mind Timo only has one more point than Zetterlund since the trade.

Not comparing them talent wise, but just pointing out some guys take a while to get rolling with a new team and system even if they’re really good players.

Unless I’m mistaken (which is possible because I’m still getting used to what every single advanced stat is) all of those are offensive stats that you just used for a defensive D. Ferraro is a horrible player that gets caved in and is consistently out of position.

Here’s the thing:
Ferraro gives up more shot attempts while he’s on the ice, gives up more shots on net while he’s on the ice, gives up more goals, has a higher expected goals against, gives up more scoring chances, gives up more high danger scoring chances while he’s on the ice. Yes a part of that is team quality but you can’t sit there and say it all is. Ferraro is a replacement level third pairing D at best signed for multiple years at way too much.
You are mistaken. The stats I listed were his 5v5 expected goals %, scoring chance %, and high-danger scoring chance %. They are applicable to any player. Mario is at about 50% in all of those stats, meaning at 5v5 he is more mediocre than terrible as you are asserting. I'm not saying Mario is good, just that Thrun and Mukh most likely are not at his level yet.

Quickly looking at a very small sample size of Knyzhov, he has similar numbers to Ferraro but he has basically exclusively played post Timo when the entire team is checked out.

Again, I’m not advocating to sell Ferraro for a 7th. I said a 2nd or Mittelstadt. Vlasic, Knyzhov, MacDonald, Thrun isn’t any different than Ferraro for Thrun. Move him and give the spot to a young guy.

Zetterlund is a depth piece, nothing more. The main pieces of that return were the 2023 1st, Muk, and (fingers crossed) 2024 1st. If Muk busts and the two late firsts end up being darts that don't produce much, then that'll be concerning. If Zetterlund ends up just an okay 4th liner, I don't reallly think that's indicative of much.

I would take any pick for Ferraro

While Hertl can be an F1 he has always been more successful when he is the F3.

Burns - Jumbo - Hertl
Meier - Hertl - Barabonov
Kane - Hertl - F2

Zerterlund - Hertl - Eklund is a good F1-F2-F3 line but neither wing is capable of playing a top line. That is a 3rd line on a cup team or a 2nd line on a playoff team.
