Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

With how annoying Jersey fans are at this point I’d rather Timo be re-signed or sent to Carolina

Yea they are really coming off as entitled. I think Timo is a great fit for the Devils and I do like Holtz as a prospect coming back but their fanbase on HF have become insufferable. If Canes would make Nikishin available, I'd be for that deal instead.

far as I know, the St. Louis Blues have three first round picks this year. Would be nice if the sharks also had three first round picks.

With the return O’Reilly just got, I’m not convinced San Jose couldn’t get one for Couture at the draft, particularly if he becomes the third retention spot.

It’d be a sweet draft to load up, but man that team would suck!

I’m not kidding when I say that I’m convinced MG could walk into the 2023 draft with like four first round picks for the players that we could sell off of this roster but yes the team would be absolutely awful at least for another year or two
before these high level prospects start to blossom

At this point, we need to be making bigger noises about keeping Timo and re-signing him.

He's a high end player. All this talk of "I'm willing to let this/that prospect go..." is laughable. We have no need to trade him unless other franchises make it worth our while. He's 26!

Maybe it was a fever dream but iirc GMDW offered Pavs+ 4 Nash but CBJ was demanding Hertl or Couture or something
Highly doubt it was hertl, as Nash was traded just 1 month or less after the draft that hertl was drafted. No team would even try to ask for a player that was just drafted like that. Maybe the pick that was used to select hertl, but not hertl himself

Ngl one of the funniest storylines of this deadline so far is Patrick Kane only wanting to go to a couple teams and those teams being like “Uh… no thanks lol”.
Kane has been pretty bad this year so not surprising. I know there’s the whole past success and such but he has not been very good. Just going off this season alone I’d take Barabanov over Kane right now.

Nah, the "qualifying" part of qualifying offer is that it's the minimum that counts as a good-faith effort for his team to keep him according to the CBA. All it means is that the team holding his contract made a good enough offer that they're entitled to compensation if he signs elsewhere. He's still allowed to ask for more money/sign elsewhere, but the $10m figure doesn't change.
I think the $10M QO has been one of the least understood and overstated things in hockey in recent memory. Given the season that Timo is having (along with last year), he's not going to sign a 1 year $10M deal with anyone under any circumstance.

Any team that trades for him will QO him to retain his rights and then either work out an 8 year deal or trade him somewhere that he's willing to sign that deal. He's going to use this 2 season run to setup himself and his family for generations with a $65-70 million deal rather than try and double dip for maybe an extra $1-1.5 million this year where he could get injured and never see that massive long-term deal.

It’s wild though because he’s still performing SIGNIFICANTLY better than ROR, at least stat wise. I’m fascinated on how teams evaluate players sometimes.

They would have been better off with Couture. He’s a playoff performer, which Toronto could use. Minus the longer term contract of course.
I mean ROR has a Conn Smythe trophy to his name so not sure the "playoff performer" thing moves the needle in any direction. I'm waiting on Colorado to come out of the clouds for Couture if he's willing to move out of San Jose to chase a Cup.

Oh yeah, Kane has been hot garbage this year, which is why him being so selective is hilarious.
Dude has 3 Cups. Not like he really needs to chase one if it means going somewhere that him and his family don't fully want to be. If he didn't have one, I'm sure the value proposition is very different for him. Dude loves Chicago and is content to hangout there unless it's one of the few places he wants to be.

It's a tiny market at any time (usually only a handful of buyers and sellers of any particular "product"), featuring "products" whose value is highly subjective (and thus valued very differently by said buyers and sellers) and also highly variable from year to year. Trying to determine "market value" in the trade market is kind of pointless to an extent, because you're essentially operating in a bizarre bespoke barter economy.

No he’s not, he’s horrible this year. Like, “is going to actively detriment the team he’s on” horrible.

Seeing how Siegenthaler was scratched today, would you be happy if the trade was something like a 1st+Holtz+Siegenthaler? He's basically a modern Hjalmarsson
