Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

Is there any possibility in Meier increasing his QO depending on what happens this year? (I'm not sure how that is decided or what the cutoff time is)

If he could, wouldn't it make more sense for Meier to not sign until after the season? He could still be traded knowing that he'd be under team control to wherever he lands. But if say he goes to the Devils and propels them to a cup while winning the Conn Smythe (literally most valueable player) couldn't that actually increase his min qualifying offer? Also if Meier knows he's gonna get traded and sign, if he signs before the trade then the haul coming from NJ would be greater, meaning the team he's getting traded to will be weaker than if he holds out?

MG probably getting offers on certain high tier prospects from other teams. those other offers are possibly setting the bar for NJ. MG using that as leverage? Pure speculation on my part.

Nah, the "qualifying" part of qualifying offer is that it's the minimum that counts as a good-faith effort for his team to keep him according to the CBA. All it means is that the team holding his contract made a good enough offer that they're entitled to compensation if he signs elsewhere. He's still allowed to ask for more money/sign elsewhere, but the $10m figure doesn't change.

When Quinn says he hasn't seen a season like this in 30 years...how hyperbolic is he being?
I mean this season has been pretty wild. There’s been so many times where the goaltending and skaters just aren’t on the same page. Kahkonen was the only reason last night wasn’t like 5-1. Then you look at the games like the 15 goal game against Seattle earlier this year. Goalies just had to make one more save and couldn’t. Obviously there’s a lot where no one was good but there’s so few that they are all playing well together.

I don't know if the Sharks are capable of threatening Anaheim, Chicago or Columbus for one of the bottom three spots, but the sooner they can jettison one or bother of Meier and Karlsson, the better the shot.
At the moment, they are 4th worst with Arizona jumping ahead of them. My worry is that they will play well in the second half and destroy all the hard work of getting a top 5 pick. The sooner we trade the better considering the season is a write off.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Hope Timo isn't lost to an offer sheet in the off season if a deal can't be done before then.

I think we’d get like 4 1sts or something insane, so by all means…

Yeah, it’s:

More than $8,454,871 to $10,568,589 -- two first-round picks, one second-round pick and one third-round pick

I’d probably rather have a blue chip prospect + 1st rounder but listen, this ain’t bad.

Unless Timo decides to take an AAV of 8.4 mil deal, then it's just 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd rounder. Five years takes him to 31 where he can score a hefty contract as a UFA. (offer sheet AAV is calculated by dividing the total payout over the contract by the number of years of the contract or by five, which ever is lesser) If Meier didn't want to totally handcuff the team he's going to sign with he could sign something in the 8.4 range and not have his new team shitting first rounders for signing him. 10/8/8/8/8 is 8.4 mil AAV... There were rumors of extension coming in around 8.5 earlier in the year if memory serves.

I'm not saying it'll go down like that, just wondering about the possibilities if the Sharks can't unload him before the trade deadline. Just wondering how the Sharks are going to get boned on this whole sitch TBH.

Over in the Devils forum, a poster mentioned that Holtz has removed all Devils related stuff from his instagram. I can’t check as I don’t do social media but that is interesting if true.
My apologies for not being thorough, it was confirmed that Holtz has been sent down. Though, odd that he’d delete all Devils mentions. Right?

I assume they were talking about this.. I remember Clowe removed mentions of the Shorks in his bio right before he was traded.

As exciting as it is to have the biggest trade piece available the waiting and speculation is exhausting lol. Just want it to get done.
It’s a weird feeling. Exhausting is the best word.
