Im not sure it will be any better. If Nikishin if off the table, so is Jarvis and Kochetkov probably. Possibly Morrow too.

That would leave us with Drury as the main piece and thats a very meh starter.
That's not even worth it unless it's coming with firsts the next 4 years lol

Not sure why this is bad for Grier. O’Reilly has terrible stats this year and is 32 and got 3 picks. The prospects suck but Meier is SIGNIFICANTLY better and younger. If anything, this raises or, at the very least, keeps Meier’s price where it was.

I never thought Blues had a chance at Meier anyway.

Furthermore, Blues making a big move is going to push other teams to ramp up their own moves. It’s all good, I think.

inb4 last minute panic sell for a low 2nd.

😬

Meier has both more goals and more assists than O’Reilly has points… and he got 3 draft picks.
Nick Bonino has one fewer point than O'Reilly.

Reductio ad absurdum, et cetera. O'Reilly is a better player now, probably will be next year, might be having an off-year that doesn't necessarily portend poor future results, and Toronto may not care anyway because it's an expiring contract.

I think this does indicate where Meier's floor is.

It's probably better value than we'll get for Meier

No. O'Reilly is a rental. Teams that are interested in Meier will sign him to an 8-year contract to lock him up for a long-term window of contention. For a team like New Jersey, it makes them a cup contender for the next 5 years. That draws a much higher price than a one-playoff rental like O'Reilly (even given Toronto's desperation to even win a playoff round).

Now the interesting question is why is Jersey so interested now. Their window for contention opens next year when Nemec and LHughes join their team. The reason is trade and sign Meier now is that it is better that the 8th year on his contract is 23-24 instead of 31-32 (if you waited until next year to trade for him and then sign the 8 year contract).

They would have been better off with Couture. He’s a playoff performer, which Toronto could use. Minus the longer term contract of course.
Yeah, that contract is the killer. There's little doubt in my mind that Couture with only a year left on his deal could have gotten a similar return.
