Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

Think about it this way...the Senators weren't able to get Meier or Labanc when they traded Karlsson to the Sharks. I don't know if Nemec is more touted now than Meier was back then, but for sure Meier was not as coveted an asset as Karlsson was.
Meier wasn't a prospect. Norris was...

Pagnotta is meh, but I really hope this happens.

  • There seems to be some traction on the Erik Karlsson front. Nothing is close, and many still believe this is something that goes down in the summer, but San Jose has had elevated talks with multiple clubs lately and there could be a pathway to an in-season move.

Bonino on that list is interesting. Not that he’s not available but more that there’s even any possibility of interest in him. He’s not been very good this year and isn’t even playing C but maybe some younger playoff team will value his experience.
It's the same reason Cogliano was picked up by Colorado last year;.

Bonino will have some minimal value to a team looking for a fourth-line forward with playoff experience and the ability to win faceoffs, even if his value is otherwise limited to nonexistent. I wouldn't expect him to be a playoff starter (barring injury), so maybe someone throws us a 7th.

Pagnotta seemed to have some SJ sources a few years ago. He broke 3-4 things in one offseason before anyone else, so it’s probably legit.

Meier is a 26-year-old 1st line winger with three 30 goal seasons in 6 seasons, elite possession numbers, and solid defense. I get that Luke Hughes is a pipe dream, but I wouldn't settle for a mediocre package just to trade Meier for the sake of trading him either. If an extension in place gets them the blue chip piece, that should be arranged if possible. If Meier is going to NJ on a 8yr/72M extension, is a 1 for 1 Nemec for Meier trade really that unreasonable when you're trading a 1st line winger in his prime for a prospect who projects as a top pairing defenseman?
Not only that, but he’s a power forward with size, physicality, and a good skater.

He’s the type of player GMs drool over, especially for the post season.

Outside of Tchachuk, there’s not really anyone with his skillset, which is a highly coveted one.

Hot take, but Bonino has actually started to look a little better after his stint with Couture this year. He doesn't do anything great but at worst he's just not very noticeable. I could see a team needing veteran depth this year taking a flyer on him for sure.
He's also been on Sturm's wing since moving back to the third line, right? Not like it's a great line, but having him at LW definitely minimizes some of the flaws in his game at this stage of his career.

As absolutely miserable it will be to watch the Sharks without Meier and Karlsson, if we can trade both this season before the deadline and manage to get 2-3 1sts + decent prospects, that’s a huge step toward speeding up the rebuild.
Another bonus is losing every single game after.

The rookie crop next year would be insane, we would need to fire Quinn lol
