4 of 5 are defenseman. Perfect you need to let go of one for meier. Simple. Nemec + 1st for guaranteed extended meier
Think about it this way...the Senators weren't able to get Meier or Labanc when they traded Karlsson to the Sharks. I don't know if Nemec is more touted now than Meier was back then, but for sure Meier was not as coveted an asset as Karlsson was.

Let’s say we get 3rd OV this year. Draft Carlsson.

Timo goes for Holtz + late 1st + Casey.
Karlsson goes for a similar package.
Couture returns a late first.
Barabanov fetches a 2nd.
Ferraro fetches a 2nd.
We finish Last-3rd the next 3 years.

That leaves us with the following:
Carlsson
Eklund
Holtz
Bordeleu
Byfield
Casey
Whatever prospect Karlsson returns
2024 1-3OA
2024 31-34th OA
2024 Late first from NJ
2024 Late first from EK65 trade
2025 1-3OA
2025 1st from Couture trade
2025 31-34OA
2025 2nd from Barabanov trade
2026 1-3OA
2026 31-34OA
2026 2nd from Ferraro trade

Not to mention the 40+ mil in cap space as Hertl will be the only expensive contract.

That’s enough to build a solid core and maybe challenge for a wild card spot in 2027 as long as Grier doesn’t shit the bed with drafting.
Solid I think I’m gonna change my name to StanleyCup2035 😂

Erik Karlsson showing more frustration with himself over a bad shift in the final minutes of a regular-season game than many players show over a bad performance over an entire playoff series.

Thats fine, but consider that limits like that mean that you may not get Meier.
SJ will simply take the best offer, so if a team offers their own Nemec, that will win.

If not including Nemec causes the Devils to miss out on Meier I'm absolutely fine with that. I'm not in the "Meier or bust" camp and even among the Devils fans on this site that are, I have not seen a single one of them willing to give up Nemec (nevermind Hughes) in any deal for him. The Devils can make a variety of very attractive, fair offers with the other pieces they have. If some other team offers up a crazy package, such as Jarvis & a 1st, I won't blame Fitz for not stepping up and offering more. The Devils window is just starting to open. Most expected them to be a bubble team at best this season. They have a young team and one of the best prospect pools in the league - they don't have to go for it this season. Carolina's a bit more desperate given how long their contention window has been open without much playoff success, so they may be more desperate. Grier has to be careful though, because if Carolina feels the price is way to high and they pivot to land a center instead (which is a bigger position of need), that might leave him in a tough spot. I think the Devils will likely wait to see what happens with Meier before making any other moves and LeBrun mentioned on Insider Trading tonight that he thinks the Meier trade will happen at least a few days before the deadline.

They arent the only two teams interested though. If Carolina gets ROR, then you can shop to Buffalo or WPG or whoever until you find a deal that works.

If we arent getting a blue chip, theres no need to rush.

Yeah, I'm sure there are quite a few teams with varying levels of interest considering Meier is easily the top trade target available. From everything I've been hearing from the insiders/experts though, it seems like NJ and Carolina have by far the most interest...not to mention some of the best collection of assets to land him and the cap space to sign him to an extension. I would think ultimately they'd have the best offers, but we'll see.

A big part of any rumored deal for Meier is that the acquiring team would be able to negotiate an extension that would boost the return. Winnipeg and Buffalo are two of the least desirable locations in the league, so I wouldn't necessarily count on Meier being willing to sign an extension in either location (unless maybe they're willing to overpay for him, which could certainly be the case). Buffalo from what I've heard was only kicking the tires on Meier and given they're a long-shot to make the playoffs, I'm not sure why they'd be as willing to trade for him now as the other 3 teams. Who knows though - always seems to be an unexpected team in on these deals when top players are involved.

Meier should of been higher back then, he was coming off a 21 goal NHL season and 36 points.

While nemic is working on a 6 goals and 17 point AHL season. On pace for 29 points.

Devils have always made the most sense. They have Hughes, the Swiss connection with Hischier, i feel like they have what it takes overall to win the cup. Bratt. They have the picks and prospects. They have to roll the dice, take a risk and go for it if you’re NJ. MG wants value for value, no discounts. Nemec, Foote, 2nd and 3rd in 2023 and 1st in 2025? Their window is open. If things don’t work out, they have their 1st in 2023 and 2024. We get our Dman of the future, a quality winger, two extra picks in the early rounds of a deep draft and an extra 1st in the future.

We aren’t getting Nemec as much as I’d love him unless the Devils feel Timo guarantees them a cup and Nemec is no longer worth the pick they took him at. Neither of these things are happening.
