Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

I sure hope not. A buyout moves some of the financial impact into future years. While we are bad we just need to ride out these bad contracts and be done with them.
It does but I don't think it materially changes anything that matters. Whether we eat 4.725 mil next season or eat 808k next season and about 1.96 mil the year after that, we're not risking anything with either choice so I won't care if it happens or not. We're going to be dealing with bad contracts for at least three seasons after this one and we're not going to be any good nor have any upcoming prospects to worry about paying in that time.

Either trade Labanc or keep him, no need to waste a buyout on him yet, we don't need the space
I don't see a buyout as a waste in this situation. I think it's a viable option for this situation if there's no trade option but also not required of them to do or anything like that. Both parties should want to move on at this point with Labanc elsewhere. If nobody is wanting to give us a similar contract with a year left, we should buy him out to get rid of him instead of taking on a worse contract.

Labanc be all like:

Grier drafted Bystedt, who is tall but also not known to be that physical, and is a good skater. He drafted Havelid, who has the same profile as Karlsson, but much shorter, and he drafted Fisher, a guy who's greatest asset is his skating. I know it's fun to make fun of Grier and say that all he wants is players that played like himself but I don't think that's how he'll draft.

I don’t really know how much input Grier had at that point. Maybe he was given 3-5 guys available and he made a choice, but he literally was just hired, doubt he had a huge impact.

I’m not actually making fun of him I’m just looking at the profile of players he brought in over the summer - they’re all character guys. He doesn’t like soft players (Balcers?) and work ethic/motor seem important - I don’t think it’s size or anything. Eyssimont isn’t a big guy either but he matched that MO. I think Eklund is a similar version of that just high skilled.

So, who are the prospects on NJ/Rangers/Carolina that match those qualities? It’s why I’m dubious on Holtz, who doesn’t necessarily seem like he fits in with the Grier style.

But again, I could be wrong because everything Grier has done has been under specific circumstances. Even the guys he signed - he didn’t have much money and I’m sure plenty of guys don’t wanna come to the Sharks right now, so he’s picking from a very particular set of players…

The weird thing about Labanc is that Quinn keeps saying that he’s “doing everything right to get back into the lineup”… and yet he isn’t back in the lineup. Which suggests that there is something inherent to Labanc which prevents him from making the cut.

Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him Balcers’d in the off-season.

It's just strange because he was playing quite well when he was with Meier and Hertl. Unless Quinn wants him to become Mark Stone, he is who he is at this point, which is a middle six player with a good shot, good hands, and below average skating.

Can't change the lineup after a win, even if it was 10 days ago!

Yeah, the whole situation is really kind of strange. He’s genuinely looked okay this year, so I don’t really know the expectation here other than he’s just not liked.

Athletic covered this today actually. The best deal I saw was Mcgroarty, 2023 first and Samberg. Its just okay, really depends on how you rank Mcgroarty
I liked Mcgroarty pre draft so I’d be okay with that. The 1st is automatic, probably in the 20’s. Don’t know anything about Samberg. Maybe they throw Lambert in?

Samberg is probably the most valuable part of that package. 1st will be 25th or later, I don’t like McGroarty at all. I’d hate this one.

There's definitely better packages but a 24 year old dman drafted almost 6 years ago is 100% not the most valuable part of a package with a 1st round pick last year and another 1st.

You’re underestimating Samberg , who is quite good, and overestimating McGroarty and a very late 1st. I watch a ton of Michigan and never once has McGroarty stood out. Late 1sts don’t become meaningful players about two-thirds of the time.

On Holtz he isn't a soft guy without a work ethic or motor or a guy who lacks character. I remember in his DY everyone at EP raved about Holtz character and said everyone on the team side said the same things. It was said he had one of if not the best work ethics on and off the ice. He tries hard to get in on the forecheck. The main issue is that his feet aren't fully there yet. I do wonder how he'd look in a position to succeed though rather than getting being shoved down the lineup with guys like Boqvist and McLeod centering him. He's always going to fail in a situation like that.
