Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

So if the Sharks have a scout at the New Jersey game, you have to think they’re considering a roster player as part of a potential trade.

Mercer, come on down!

I am possibly bored.

I did not even know they had a scout at the Devils game, so you are providing really valuable information here, Good work!

I Imagine the Sharks will ask for Mercer, but I wonder about Sharangovich, Zetterlund from the current roster. I think everyone wonders what Grier actually wants or what his modus is. How bad does Grier want it to get to get picks and prospects? There's a case to be made for volume of assets in a trade like this. So you don't get the Mercer back, but you get more assets instead.

That’s the big question. I think we know the general gist is hard worker but Grier hasn’t attempted to get a high end skill guy yet and so the question is - what’s his profile there?

I actually imagine Eklund is a Grier type skill player.

So, Labanc is going to get traded for a 7th rounder right? Benched again? I don’t really get it.
Considering the scratches that have been happening lately, I don't think a trade is on the horizon though I'd prefer it. Labanc is probably getting bought out in the offseason.

I don’t see a way LaBanc is wearing teal next year. He’s the antithesis of what Greier is trying to build.

Not saying he’s a bad player, just exactly the opposite of the player Grier wants.

Grier drafted Bystedt, who is tall but also not known to be that physical, and is a good skater. He drafted Havelid, who has the same profile as Karlsson, but much shorter, and he drafted Fisher, a guy who's greatest asset is his skating. I know it's fun to make fun of Grier and say that all he wants is players that played like himself but I don't think that's how he'll draft.

I sure hope not. A buyout moves some of the financial impact into future years. While we are bad we just need to ride out these bad contracts and be done with them.
Using a buyout on a guy like Labanc in this team's current situation would feel really weird to me. Like you said, why not just ride it out? And it's not like he's been particularly unproductive.

He's not too good defensively, he takes some bad penalties, and on a bad team he makes for a great whipping boy for a coach like Quinn. He has a somewhat large contract but he's never been a star, he was a low draft pick, so he can be held up as an example. Except what's weird is that there are no kids on the current team, so what's even the point since you're cratering any trade value he might have had?

Maybe they think kids with the Cuda are paying attention? I don't know. To me it all smacks of poor man-management. I remember this kind of stuff with the Rangers. Always wanted to like Quinn as a coach but stuff like this, plus consistent under-performance, have made it hard.
