Trade Meier to NJ, acquire a late-ish first round pick, end up at 6th overall in the draft lottery, bundle the 6th overall with NJ's 1st and a 2nd rounder to move up to 3rd or 4th, pick WILL SMITH BABY!
True, we can assume that Grier will go for the best deal possible, but what could be telling is how Grier is evaluating players. If the main piece is a middling prospect who doesn't pan out, it'll speak to Grier's poor ability to evaluate talent.
On the main boards, some people are suggesting the Sharks could get Hughes, Power, or Wright for Meier and I just can't see that being the case.

Literally no one is suggesting any of those guys as a reasonable return for Meier. Someone may have said Hughes as a joke because Devils fans have become so annoying, but that’s a joke.True, we can assume that Grier will go for the best deal possible, but what could be telling is how Grier is evaluating players. Will Smith would probably be available at 6th overall so there would be no need to move up lol.Trade Meier to NJ, acquire a late-ish first round pick, end up at 6th overall in the draft lottery, bundle the 6th overall with NJ's 1st and a 2nd rounder to move up to 3rd or 4th, pick WILL SMITH BABY!
Better to move down a few spots than stay pat for a Smith or BensonWill Smith would probably be available at 6th overall so there would be no need to move up lol.
I doubt any team in the top-4 trades down, unless someone values Michkov very high and another team values him low. The top-4 of this draft would've gone first overall last year.
I mean both Benson or Smith would become our best prospect so no we shouldn’t move down.Better to move down a few spots than stay pat for a Smith or Benson
Yes, that’s why I’d rather have Holtz + a late first than a single 7-10 1st as the main piece(s). Hedge the bet a little bit. It's not realistic to expect Meier to return something that will be as good as Meier is or has been. The odds of drafting a player who winds up as good as Meier has been, using a pick we acquired, are pretty slim.
The key is to return the best value available, knowing that the value Meier will provide in the future is very likely one more excellent season (in a season in which the team will suck) and then zero.
I haven't listened to any pod casts but I'd agree Brods is not a grade A prospects and that the Sharks can't expect anything like that in return.I mean both Benson or Smith would become our best prospect so no we shouldn’t move down.
In other news, I couldn’t even listen to LOS for 17 mins today. JD is out for lunch calling Bordeleau a Grade A prospect and suggesting Luke Hughes in a Meier trade. And Kyle is just as bad asking for Nemec, Holtz, and a first.
I don’t believe a team would do that.If Sharks hypothetically get a late first in a Timo deal, would you package the two first rounders (hypothetically if we end up outside the top 5) to move up for Fantilli?
Yes but I don’t think any team will trade the 3rd/4th overall for the 6th/7th and a late first. If Sharks hypothetically get a late first in a Timo deal, would you package the two first rounders (hypothetically if we end up outside the top 5) to move up for Fantilli?
I would easily do that. Maybe for Carlsson tooIf Sharks hypothetically get a late first in a Timo deal, would you package the two first rounders (hypothetically if we end up outside the top 5) to move up for Fantilli?
I don't see why not if you're a team that's more in need of D prospects since there aren't any really mocked inside of the top 8.Yes but I don’t think any team will trade the 3rd/4th overall for the 6th/7th and a late first.
Would you trade Meier for Hughes 1 for 1? There’s always that gap in value assessment between a player who is, and what a player may be. Hughes could be an elite dman in the NHL, but Meier is an elite player already. If I were Grier, I’m not trading an elite player for anyone who doesn’t have the possibility to at least approach that ceiling. Especially since Meier still has 3-4 more good years. The quantity packages are underwhelming. I don’t want Holtz, a 1st and another prospect. I’m aiming as high as possible. If Hughes or Nemec aren’t part of the package, then I’m not very interested. If you’re trading Meier to hasten the rebuild, it has to return a core piece.Literally no one is suggesting any of those guys as a reasonable return for Meier. Someone may have said Hughes as a joke because Devils fans have become so annoying, but that’s a joke.
In a draft this top heavy with a top-4 pick, you don’t draft for need/position, especially if all you’re getting back is a late 1st.I don't see why not if you're a team that's more in need of D prospects since there aren't any really mocked inside of the top 8.

Getting a late first to drop 2 spots is a pretty reasonable coup.In a draft this top heavy with a top-4 pick, you don’t draft for need/position, especially if all you’re getting back is a late 1st.
It is if you believe the player caliber drop from those two spots can be made up for with that late pick. In this draft, I don't think you can make a good argument for that being the case. There's a considerable drop-off in talent past the top four and a lot more risk attached to those after in my mind.Getting a late first to drop 2 spots is a pretty reasonable coup.

It was a joke. You want the Sharks to move up to 3rd pick and then pick Smith? He ain't going that high and he's committed to BU.
If Sharks have the 3rd pick, one of Bedard, Fantilli, or Carlsson will be available.
Sharks should have 3 1st round picks this year if Greier plays his cards right. Meier, Couture, and their own.
Honestly, it's Laf + or Othmann + or nothing. I'm not a believer in KK or Krav.Sounds like the Rangers have made Meier a priority too. You have to imagine if, cutting through the rumors, there are at least 2-3 teams seriously trying to get him, that Grier can extract a significant prospect, fancier than, say, Holtz. As we’ve all been saying - getting a bunch of B prospects feels like a waste and this trade HAS to be a significant one for us.
We also have time on our side - Grier can always push this to summer and it’s fine for the Sharks. If teams want him for their playoff run now, I hope Grier is pumping them for all they’re worth.
