If the pick ends up being 1-11 this year it rolls into a 2024 1st? Not sure if next years one is unprotected. Feels like the Sharks were the last team ever to send a unprotected 1st in a situation like this haha
sharks should of added at minimum top 5 protection that was a terrible trade. We lost Norris (top6), Demelo(top4), Tierny(3rd line center) and Balcers (who we got back for free though) and that 1st that turned into Stuzle (another top 6 stud... jesus christ) for a often injured karlsson :(((((

Getting Karlsson was supposed to take us to the top of the mountain. Nothing else mattered.

I'm pretty sure the condition in the Horvat trade is that if it is in the top 11 or 12 or whatever it was in this years draft, the Islanders get the choice of giving Vancouver their first pick this year or next. Similar to how Ottawa chose to keep their 2018 first round pick and give Colorado the 2019 pick in the Duchene trade.

It may be in the deal but no one is privy to it yet.
I meant I don't think the NHL is allowing a pick to be added to a trade on the condition the about-to-be-XFA player re-signs with the team they were traded to.

People here were telling me that Karlsson tilts the ice. I laughed back then, and still do.

If he did tilt the ice, then the Sharks slide all the way down to the 2nd pick of the draft and gifted it to Ottawa.

I mean the team lost a ton of players to FA and were riddled by injury during that 2020 season. We were 2 wins away from the cup final with a half-injured Karlsson in 2019.

our results from 2020 were mostly due to him NOT being on the ice, but whatever.

The grass is always greener. If you’re going to call Karlsson “oft-injured”, then you better call Norris the same thing.

We couldn’t add draft protection to the 2020 pick because of the Kane trade. If we hadn’t re-signed Kane, then the 2019 1st would have gone to Ottawa as part of the Karlsson trade and then instead of Ottawa getting Stutzle they get Brayden Tracey (or whoever they want with the 29th overall pick). It’s the Kane re-signing that was by far the worst move the Sharks have ever made. Without it, the Karlsson trade basically ends up Karlsson for “oft-injured” Norris.

This stuff always gets overlooked.

Why not more?

Position probably. I think there’s also a huge variation in how people view Raty. I think he could end up a good 2C but I’ve also seen some people say that he probably ends up as a 3C due to speed. So it could be that exec sees Raty as an A prospect so A prospect+early-mid first is a huge package. Or it could be that the exec sees Raty as a B prospect which still pretty good package.

Brutal for Van fans. But good to know the market is probably booming for Timo

I don’t know how much I believe that. Not that there weren’t other offers out there but it feels like one of those times where a team is overvaluing their own assets. It also depends on how someone views Raty. It sounds like Canucks’ management love him and think he can be a good C to build around. I think he will be a really good 2C behind Pettersson. If another team doesn’t like Raty (which a few really don’t) then yeah they could think their package is bigger but Canucks didn’t.

Package perception <> package value

Something something beholder eyes.

Can't wait for the tweet saying we resigned Meier for $72m over 8 years
To be honest, I still don't think that would be an awful move - I think Meier will be worth the money for most of that deal, and it would be good to have a play-driving forward to keep in the top six (especially if we are able to move Couture at some point). We'll still be a lottery team for this year and the next couple anyway, most likely.

I don't think it likely and trading Meier probably makes more sense, but I just don't think an extension would really be disastrous.

I think I could live with it ultimately - especially if we get a good player in this year’s draft and Bordeleau/Eklund can make the jump to the NHL next year and have an impact.

I just think the very best thing for the rebuild is for Meier to net us 2 great to good prospects + 1st — because the team has way too many holes to fill and a Meier trade can help fill them for the future.

Not to nitpick, but Demelo was not a top 4 d-man at the time of the trade. Wasn't even in the Sharks' top 6 (#8 in TOI/G).
