Good few thoughts about the sharks in Friedmans 32 thoughts, but one is that the sharks are asking teams about goal tending prospects specifically.

Personally I think thats a horrible idea, because goaltending is so unpredictable and not a single goaltender prospect I have followed has had a predictable career.
Yep, they already wasted Middleton on one of those in Kahkonen...although he is a great tank commander.

If the goalie prospect is the 3+ piece then whatever, but man I swear they're going to mess this up so bad

Seriously. And any young goalie they bring in is going to look like a f***ing bum out there if the defense sucks. What a way to go about fixing things in the completely wrong order (if they go this way).

It was a smaller level but shouldn't the Middleton-for Kahkonen trade be a good recent reminder of how futile this approach tends to be?

That would just make me roll my eyes at Grier again

It would be a risky move for a GM to trade for EK before the deadline in hopes that he'll be as great in the playoffs as he is now. New city, new teammates, new coaches, new system, and he would have to adapt quickly. It's not a matter for me of drive or determination as when he gets back in the playoffs again he will be as driven as ever, but the execution might not be there. It would also be odd for a playoff team to be successful in how they play and then have to change to fit him in after 55-60 games - if you're bringing someone as dominant offensively as Karl in, he's going to be the primary point of your attack.

All of this is to say I think it's like 99% more likely he gets moved in the summer when he can have preparation time and a full season to feel it with his new team before going on a playoff run.

The problem is that it is very hard to win in this league without at least mediocre goaltending. The last time to win a cup with sub-average goaltending was Chicago in 2010 (with an absolutely loaded roster, and even then had they played a smart, elite team they would have been in trouble).

It also feels like there's more variation than ever at the goaltending position...how few goaltenders are actually elite, or even consistently starter-material, year-to-year? It creates a premium for the handful that can crack it.

The answer could be no because that was Will’s goalie not Grier’s.

To the extent that this is true, it means that the Sharks lack confidence in their goaltending pool. But so far, it seems like the strategy has been to amass quantity and then hope for something to stick. I wish there were an apt metaphor for such a method...
I read it that way too. If Reimer is gone and they don't like what they have in Kahkonen, they are going to need better options in the pipeline. To put all the immediate eggs in the Makiniemi basket is risky.

It could also be a thing where they don't think their goalie scouting is up to par and would rather bring in known goalie prospects via trade and save their picks for positions they are better at evaluating

They aren't totally wrong about looking into improving it either. Reimer is borderline washed, Kahkonen is nothing, Makiniemi is developing, Mann and Emond probably aren't anything, and Gaudreau and Beaupit are having below average seasons. It's a lot of bodies but very little quality.

Even if goaltending is voodoo and it doesn't make sense using assets to acquire goalies, you still need to actually do it.

Only if the goalie is like 19-21 will that matter though. Any other goalie will be gone by the time we want a good goalie
