More importantly I think this does set a benchmark for Meier's next contract. Anything over 8.5M-9M if we're extending him long term would be an overpayment. I'd be happy to extend Timo though at 8x8.5M.

The Sharks aren’t in the competition for Bedard. Not really. All of Arizona, Buffalo, Chicago, Anaheim, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Montreal are still clearly right in that tier of bad teams with the Sharks if not worse.

With some bad luck we could easily be as bad as those teams. If Karlsson goes down we have zero top 4 D men

He doesn’t even have to get injured. What if Quinn holds him accountable for playing hard every shift? If Bob was holding the veterans accountable, Karlsson would have spent a lot of time in the press box.

New Jersey easily has a better roster than we do. Buffalo could take a sizeable step forward next year too. But we're maybe a half step above the other 5 you mentioned and I wouldn't trust the sharks to win games against them

New Jersey only added guys like Palat and Marino. Both guys I have serious doubts about at least playing in New Jersey. But their goaltending and defense isn’t really improving and if the Sharks get the goaltending they got, they can be better again. All those teams could take forward steps but they all have fatal flaws similar to us too. I don’t know we’ll see. I just don’t think this team will be as bad as they need to in order to get that top pick. They need to be in the top three to at least guarantee themselves a core level prospect.

Montreal under st louis was right on the same tier that we have been on the past 3 years.

Wonder if Huberdeau was one of the rumored player to not be getting a good night sleep before game 4

Florida gets eight years of Tkachuk’s prime in exchange for a one dimensional winger and a good but error prone defenseman whose skating was exposed in the playoffs, both of whom are set to sign big contracts by next summer that will age like milk. Clear win for the Panthers.

That return on Tkachuk makes me want to start shopping Timo immediately. Go get two blue chip prospects or good top line players for one. Go move him to NJD for Bratt, Holtz and a first and then flip Bratt to BUF for Savoie and a first.

So in your mind Meier is significantly more valuable than Tkachuk? Because Bratt, Holtz and New Jersey’s first are far more valuable assets than the Flames got.

Yeah, I think guaranteed one year of 28/29 aged soon to be UFAs Huberdeau and Weegar, and lottery protected 25 1st are not amazing returns for 8 years of Tkachuk.

One could argue a closer deal for Meier from NJ would be Palat, Severson, prospect plus 1st. Not something I’d be particularly excited about.

Whoa what? How is a top line 100+ point winger, a number 2 D, a good prospect and a first close to a low end 1st line/high end 2nd line winger, a 4D, a prospect and a first close packages? Those are no where near comparable.

Because contracts and aging curves exist.

Florida overpaid, but they must've felt that Huby and Weegar weren't going to re-sign and wanted to get something for them.

It’s about as comparable as a 100 pt. Tkachuk and the 80 pt Meier, using the players that Jersey has available in their late 20s.

What do you guys think about trying Vlasic - Karlsson again? I mean it's no playoffs season anyway, why not try out something that if works, could give Vlasic something to actually do. I know Vlasic has gone very much downhill these couple of seasons, but it kind of gives him something to work for.
The perfect scenario would be to get Ferraro - Karlsson working together well. I just think Ferraro and Karlsson should be in different lines to spread the depth somehow.

Vlasic - Karlsson
Ferraro - Merkley
Nutivaara - Benning
Megna

I don't anything anyone will like this idea, but it just is kinda whatever right now. I feel like Vlasic could actually be even more motivated to work now that a big piece in Burns is gone and there is more space in depth.

I’d prefer Knyzhov there with EK and Vlasic just ya know gone.

I can't see it working out. Vlasic can't skate and thus can't keep up with top-line talent because he's no longer capable of getting in the right place at the right time reliably. He already can't really keep up with the pace of depth lines, and other than his stickwork he doesn't have any other real talents. He doesn't create space offensively, he can't really take away space defensively, he doesn't do the hard physical work to try and retrieve picks against the boards, and he doesn't pass or carry the puck forward. As he ages, he's only getting slower while the league continues to speed up, exasperating the problem, and I don't think effort can really arrest this issue - he just can't skate like a player with his skill set needs to these days.

Maybe he works out this year as a sheltered third-pairing guy playing 15 minutes a night with limited PK time, as long as he's paired up with someone who can move the puck a bit and possibly also eat some physicality (I don't know if Benning or Nutivaara can be that guy - Merkley can definitely do the former but shouldn't do the latter, though he tries). But a top-pairing role for Vlasic is almost certainly going to be a disaster again.
