What a subtle way to announce plans for this season. :sarcasm:

If the Sharks are going to trade Meier, his value might be at its peak. Look at what the Sharks had to settle for with Burns, and recall that 2 years ago it was rumored that Carolina had offered a package of Pesce, Necas, and Dzingel for him...

Catching up from a long weekend away from technology, but would suspect that Nino was not willing to sign a deal like that in SJ given where the Nashville roster is compared to the Sharks roster is from the standpoint of competing soon. More to these deals than just the cap hit (plus the fact that he'd make $445k less if he signed the identical deal in SJ due to state income tax differences).

Meier only has value to teams he’s willing to sign a reasonable extension with that they can fit under the cap. This drastically limits the number of suitors and the likely return.

This isn’t true. There’s likely those that would be happy to pay a one year rental’s price for Meier.

So a late 1st and a B prospect. Doesn’t sound like peak value to me.

DW f***ed this franchise over in so many ways not the least of which was the insane Meier QO.

Why would they get peak value on Meier? The only reason they’d move him is because they don’t feel like he’ll sign long term.

Calgary got peak value for tkathuk.
If you say so. I don’t think it’s known what they got until they see what happens with Huberdeau and Weegar. The Sharks and Meier aren’t making waves about their negotiations or lack thereof so it’s unlikely to be a similar situation. Again, until they know Meier won’t stay, they likely will hang on to him as long as possible.

They might be able to get more value for him as a rental this season because the acquiring team could flip him in the offseason in a similar deal as the Thackuk deal.

Calgary didn’t get a big return. They traded 1 year of Huber and Wagner for 1 year of Thuchuk, only getting a distant protected 1st and prospect. They could probably have gotten more than the 1st and prospect at the deadline if they held firm and forced him to sign his QO.

They approached the trade in a totally different situation than SJ would based on where the rest of their roster is. Calgary wants to stay in their contention window even after losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk so they took players that are ready to help them win now rather than a heavy futures package.

If they flame out and the new additions don't want to sign, Huberdeau alone will yield them a massive return of 2 first rounders and then more while Weegar also probably returns a 1st round pick. I'd assume CGY hopes to re-sign those guys, but if not and the team struggles then they have an easy pivot that makes the Tkachuk return look very good (i.e. could yield 4 first round picks by the time that they sell off a Huberdeau/Weegar on top of the pick they got from FLA).

If SJ moves Meier, it is not to try and win now or even next year and thus the package would be filled with guys that are going to be much younger and/or laden with draft picks for Grier/Fitzgerald to put their stamp on the prospect pool and organizational depth. He'd return a nice haul though no matter what and trading him is probably the best move compared to an 8 year $8.5 million contract.

In your opinion, is this mock trade I did, too little in return for Meier?

Yeah, I don't know that a trade like that is really in the ballpark. I get attaching Labanc lowers the value, but I also don't think that Grier would do that and would instead ride out Labanc's contract since trading Meier would indicate a more harsh roster reset/rebuild that removes the cap crunch that Labanc's deal causes.

Severson + Wood + Holtz + 2024 1st round pick (SJ adds a conditional 3rd in 2024 if Severson re-signs) would be the package that is more in line with the value I'm looking for or would accept.

Wood is a 3rd line winger in the mold that Grier seems to be targeting (size, leadership, competitiveness, etc.), Severson would be the perfect RD fit for the 2nd pairing behind Karlsson, Holtz is the elite prospect that has the chance to match or surpass Meier (or could flop), and the 2024 1st rounder is a wild card that doesn't take NJD out of the Bedard sweepstakes if they get no goaltending again this year. I'd try to re-sign Severson to a deal about like what Colorado got Manson for (4 years $4.5 million a year) and if he doesn't re-sign then you can get a 2nd rounder and more at the TDL for his services.
