Professional players can chip the puck off the boards and not ice the puck. Especially with two teammates available for a breakout. Icing the puck, especially when you can't call a timeout (the Kings were fortunate that the Islanders did) was a very bad decision.
Watch it again, you might notice the Islander PLAYERS not just one in the area that you think a breakout was available.

He made the best decision there...

Lol you can read this entire thread and see who has actually played vs who hasn't....

Doughty play with 20 sec left those who haven't played can't understand what happened. Those who have played understand that was the better of two shit options, and there was no freaking way he was risking a pass in his own zone vs a definite clear....

Thats just one that stand out of many
What about the non-defensively deficient Durzi getting beat on the outside(as he has been all season) by a defenseman at the end of his shift? Allowing him to go end to end and allowing a centre feed on his back hand?
What's your holier than thou explanation that that was a-okay and not proof once again that Durzi is in fact defensively deficient?

LOL you might wanna think your definition of beat on the outside......he made a desperate pass to the middle from the goal line OUTSIDE THE DOTS....

As for Durzi, he isn't that physical D man that Anderson that's not his strength, he kept him on the outside like he is supposed to, Arvidsson or Danault shows an OUNCE of interest, and that puck is intercepted.....but yea....let's blame the D who did his job and kept him on the outside the entire way....

Like I said, this shows who has never played.

Easy bruh, these guys play pro hockey on Xbox every day.

Fox, a retired professional, offered that Doughty's best defense is his teammates didn't call for it fast enough.

I take it you're also telling Fox that he's never played and doesn't know what he's talking about.

Heck, Faust also saw that the chip off the boards was the better decision.

Your crusade to pretend you're smarter than a forum full of hockey fans by abjectively patronizing everyone who critiques plays is not working out.

The icing kept TMac from putting Durzi out there during the last 30 seconds of the game. Drew was playing 6d chess!

Drew has been playing quite well on average but he makes around 5 exquisitely boneheaded plays per game. One of the themes has been not locating a good pressure-relieving pass--usually he's behind the net or in the corners on these, but that icing definitely qualifies. It's like his guile and decisiveness freeze up momentarily and then he has to rush it. Everyone makes mistakes but this is uncharacteristic for him so it's vexing

He was playing really well. This roadtrip he hasnt been as good.
Its crazy how much better the team is as a whole when he is on his game. When hes not playing as well the entire d corp is a big time weakness.

Nope, just you apparently.....critique all you want, but be right about it....the whole Doughty could have done anything else than that, is just that, it's a bullshit critique,

I'd taking that icing 100% of the time, rather than risk the possibility of a giveway with 2 players at or out, of the defensive blueline, let's ignore the Islanders that were between Doughty and Kempe and whoever else was there.....

Like I said, watch the play again.....Doughty is right handed, puck is on the boards, but you felt it was a better play for him to shovel the puck into the center....in reach of two Islander players, instead of risking an icing?? Did Bjornfot the other day not prove to you how bad a bobbled puck is inside your zone?

Last year I had huge concern about Kopitar game, but he is totally rejuvenated this year.

Doughty on another side looks progressively bad.

Have you never heard of backhanding a puck off the boards? Doughty had 2 teammates and one Islander. If he backhands it off the boards and out. The possible outcomes:
- the Isles player would have a second to try to control the puck before Doughty's momentum would carry him into the player. He can try to clear again after colliding
- the puck gets to the neutral zone and the Islanders have to touch up
- the puck gets to Kopitar or Kempe and chances a goal for
- the puck gets fumbled, taken by the Islanders, and a goal against is risked

1/4 outcomes are bad.

By icing the puck, you have your tired teammates back in the defensive zone for a faceoff. Let's look at those outcomes:
- Kings win the faceoff, but lose possession, and a goal against is risked
- Kings win the faceoff and clear the zone
- Islanders win the faceoff, but lose possession, and the Kings clear
- Islanders win the faceoff and a goal against is risked.

2/4 outcomes are bad

Icing the puck, when looking at the outcomes, is objectively twice as bad.

But since you're unaware of backhands or the fact professionals practice these types of clears, your fervent and aggressive ignorance is explained.

LOL the very fact that you think backhanding the puck out, with 22-25 seconds left in a one goal game, SPEAKS VOLUMES.....

You started the argument by saying that people questioning Doughty’s decision never played the game. When told that a retired professional also questioned the play and provided with evidence of better choices, you pull the LOL card. Just admit you lost the argument and move on.

It all makes sense now.
Spence will get his chance but for now its Roy and Walker at least until their contracts run out in 2024

He's not a second-year pro, he's a fourth-year pro. He has never had defensive smarts going back to his days in junior. That's not something you can learn over time. You either have it or you don't.
Don't think that's true...you can't teach Offense but you can teach Defense

The patently absurd thing about breaking out the “never played the game” card is that I’d bet a healthy portion of this board did/does, in fact, play hockey (some even at fairly competitive levels).

edit: not that it should even be indicative of whether someone can comment on game situation decisions in the first place.

This is an example of management’s random decision making. If they’re trying to win now, they should go with their best options, ie Spence over Walker. If they’re trying to build for the future, they should still be playing Spence over Walker. This is why I fear that they’re trying to win now and actually think Walker is better than Spence.

There are better options than just icing the puck there, just none I'm confident that Doughty can pull off.

Are we all happy now?

I know several members of this board--some active, some lurkers--who have played significant amounts of time at very significant levels of hockey (and are often MUCH more educated than your 'typical' NHL folks).

Not everyone is a coach and can verbalize/write everything in a way that is going to make others believe it, but anyone calling out people who have intricately watched and played hockey for 40 years and more than a handful at professional levels as if they have no clue needs to take a long walk off a short pier.

The idea that even professionals reach consensus on some of these things is the biggest fallacy on these boards. Disagreeing with a professional decision or analysis doesn't DQ you somehow.

Edit: And I'm not saying this to be disrespectful to NHL lifers and legends of the game who do much harder work behind the scenes than me armchairing on a message board with no stakes

Yeah dude, watched him skate by him on the outside like has been happening his whole NHL career.

Also I have played lmao, so what's your next I'm better than everyone super sick own? "This shows who have never played at xxx level like me"?

And that's the thing. As you said, experience doesn't even disqualify you from having an opinion and discussing things. Most people on this board are cool, helpful, and enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience.

But to "LOL you've never played, I know more, and this is why you're all dumb" when people have taken the time to explain why? GTFO here.

Happy to disagree or change my stance if presented with a strong enough argument. But coupling your ignorance with arrogance (obviously not meaning you specifically) won't get productive discussion.

Ultimately, I think it was a bad decision that was, more than anything, influenced by exhaustion after a long shift at the end of a back-to-back. It doesn't make Doughty a bad player or bad person. But icing the puck with a one-goal lead at the end of a game when you had two supporting teammates nearby is not ideal decision making. Icing is a last resort.
