I like our defensemen a lot better than how we ended the season, but I don't like the combinations (handiness, play style, etc.) of defensemen we have if that makes sense.

Id be far more concerned if half of them werent going to be traded during the season or coming back next year. This blueline is a hodgepodge of capable guys. No real identity but its works, kind of. middle of the road stop gap .

It reminds me of the 10-11 season, when we had guys like Lilja, Sutton, Mikkelson, Syvret, Brookbank, but I don’t think Klinberg will have a 10-11 Lubo season. Nor do we have a Lydman.

I’ve been a fan of trading Shattenkirk for a while now, but sadly he’s still needed, as he’s our bed right handed defenseman for the Pk. I’d be on board for trading him and adding another defensive defenseman though.

Agreed. We don’t have the depth to be trading him unfortunately. Behind him on the depth chart are a bunch of journeymen.

If they tried Bieska at 4th line forward then perhaps they can try Shattenkirk there and and give him some Powerplay minutes.

Some things I was not aware of before today:

Last year, Shattenkirk AVERAGED (a bit) more TOI on the PK than Lindholm.
Perhaps it was the fact that we were stronger on the left side (Folwer), but still.

Simon Benoit was 52nd in the NHL in hits last year. He didn't even play a full season or that much TOI.

Doubt we move Shatty right now. The way I see it is:
Fowler- Klingberg
Kulikov-Drysdale
Vaaks/Benoit-Shatty
Vaaks/Benoit
Mahura
Run with 8
Not a fan of carrying 8 D. Waive Mahura, he will probably clear and San Diego could use him.

This soft D core could use a Sutton or Brookbank.

I mean Fowler and Shattenkirk were basically playing almost the entire PK after the TDL.

Yeah, that inflated their minutes to make it seem like that was the case throughout the season more than it actually was.

Shattenkirk averaged 2:10 up until TDL and 2:19 after the TDL. Not much changed.

We will gonna need him for the PK. On the right side, last year – Drysdale averaged 0:02 and Klingberg 0:15 TOI on the PK. They are probably not ready to take on significant time but will have to anyway. Even with Shatt

PK will likely be a combination of..

Kulikov, Shatty, Fowler, and Vaak/Benoit

Kulikov will eat up a lot of the mins and Fowler should get some relief on the PK. Which will go a long way for his ES and PP time.

I would expect Drysdale to get increasingly more minutes as well. But overall, we look pretty damn scary (in a bad way) on the PK defense.
I would actually expect Fowler to carry the load on PK. Someone have to play the right side, so either Kulikov or Fowler could be switching there.

PK1: Fowler-Shatt
PK2: Vaaks/Benoit-Kulikov

I don't know if Fowler will get relief and I don't expect him to get that much relief from the PK unit. In signing Klingberg, Fowler can focus on playing defense and Klingberg takes over the offensive role on the PP.

Things can change if Kulikov's defense is solid, then he can eat up more PK time. Maybe a Benoit-Kulikov could be a good surprise PK pairing?

Hasn't Fowler played the right side before? Maybe he and Kulikov swap spots? That is under the assumption he's good enough defensively.

Yeah he’s definitely played both sides before, he got better on the right as he got older.
