A hole is a hole. No idea if any of the kids will actually fill any of then. And the best bet for a defensive style D is Anderson who for some reasons hasn't gotten any opportunity with the NHL club yet.
Yep, we don't know 1) whether it's actually short term and 2) even short term problems can cause long term damage. But if we're just going be Assets'R'Us instead of an actual functioning hockey team then sure, who gives a f*** if there's a hole.

I'm on the Klingberg Hate Train but Cam has been dreadful this year. I was watching him close on Saturday and his reads are port-o-potty-at-a-festival bad. The first 2 Hawks goals were the product of outnumbered breakouts because Cam was essentially goal line extended on offense for no good reason. He looks to jump in way too often on a team that isn't disciplined enough defensively. He's supposed to bring stability to the back end but so far I've been getting that from Benoit not Cam.

We are in last place... that's not even the most sad thing... we shouldn't even have some of the wins we got lol

Well, they still don’t have a regulation win. So it’s pretty bad, lol.

Just looking at that lineup is depressing - holy shit. I'm not sure why my patience is running so thin with this team lately.
I dont even mind... zegras and Terry are still fun to watch despite the team being absolute trash.

And the idea of getting a top pick this year really keeps me motivated... hoping Verbeek continues to cut the rest of the Pre Terry/Zegras players out of the org, and starts fresh.

Doesnt hurt to see Mintyukov + Zellweger and some of the other prospects really excelling.

Also i just watch a lot of bruins games now

If there is a situation where a guy like BB is let go, and it’s a guy gmPV is high on, I would bet my arm that he would then snap fire eakins and get his head coach in there. It’s late enough in the season where you did your due diligence in letting eakins try and figure it out, and also being last place in a great year too tank. Then hiring your guy, is pretty great outcome for the franchise. All while letting the youngsters continue to marinade

There’s no reason anyone should think Verbeek is in any rush whatsoever to get a coach

It's possible BB might end up being the best option in the offseason, but I'd sure wait to see who else is available before committing to someone like him before then. He's a good motivator like Eakins, and he does seem to get a lot out of his offensive players, but he certainly has plenty of flaws.

He's also able to coach stingy defense. I think BBs issues were always being to rigid with his systems while I think Eakins is too lax whith his. Eakins teams don't have structure to fall back on while BB teams do but once teams adjust to him he can't make his own. He just line blends to try and get different looks.

I don't understand why you would expect a GM who takes over a rebuilding team mid-season to immediately burn assets to fill a short term hole

When Verbeek took over on Feb 3, 2022, the Ducks were 23-16-9 (55 points).

From Detroit News on Feb 3, 2022, when Verbeek was hired:
"This team doesn't need to be rebuilt; they're in the middle of their rebuild, so this is a great opportunity to take this team forward and turn them into a contender," Verbeek said during his introductory press conference.

I identified two similar events in different seasons with the same team to show Verbeek intended to reset the team all long. Yet, your tunnel-vision is far too proud to accept Verbeek had reset all along.

BTW, are you saying that Verbeek isn't imaginative enough to either a) acquire a hole on the cheap or b) acquire an asset that could potentially become a long term solution? Gudbranson was had for a 7th round pick and a forgotten prospect. Is a "7th round pick and a forgotten prospect" far too rich of assets to burn?

Last season with any one of Lindholm, Fowler, or Manson down, then the team would be icing three rookies in Drysdale, Mahura, and Benoit. Even our AHL replacements were worse than those three rookies. Yet, Verbeek offered no support despite being in a playoff hunt with a record of, again, 23-16-9 (55 pts).

This season, we're hit with a lot of injuries to the blue line in Vaaks, Drysdale, Shattenkirk, and Beaulieu. Verbeek is standing still with no thoughts of acquiring any outside help again, but this year is different. We haven't won a game in regulation time after 15 games, 4-10-1 (9 pts). For comparison, Anaheim was 8-4-3 (17 pts) last year in our first 15 games. I have no problem with Verbeek not trying to acquire outside help.

The problem with proud tunnel-vision is it's difficult to notice nuances from the narrative.

I usually defer to what a GM or coach does instead of what they say. Two examples: Verbeek said we were in the middle of a rebuild, then went and traded three key veteran UFA's for futures. After that, he brought back a career losing coach for another year. His actions speak louder than his words. This year is a tank. I submit that if he really thought Ducks were in the middle of a rebuild, he would have tried harder to resign Lindholm and Manson and Eakins would have been sent packing. A few weeks ago Regenda was sent down despite (to many on this board) looking pretty good. Eakins said (paraphrasing here) that he wasn't ready for the NHL. When Grant got hurt, Regenda was back up (ready now) and is now being used in the top six. I submit that Eakins knew what he had in Regenda, but wasn't going to ice him over a vet. I don't think a couple weeks in SD was the difference in him being ready for the NHL.

Our GM designed not to care about roster balance, physicality, nor protection. It makes it difficult to care too much with the care our GM has invested in the present.

He's also able to coach stingy defense. I think BBs issues were always being to rigid with his systems while I think Eakins is too lax whith his. Eakins teams don't have structure to fall back on while BB teams do but once teams adjust to him he can't make his own. He just line blends to try and get different looks.

With this current roster makeup, it's difficult to develop structure. We've gone through two huge roster turnovers, one at the TDL and another during the off-season. Our best defenseman for the season is Shattenkirk.

League Ranking
ES GF: 17th
ES GA: 30th
PP: 31st
PK: 31st

* Eakins is in charge of ES play. His team can score at league average, but incapable of defending. A big part of the problem on ES defense is our D isn't communicating with our F on rotations when a D pinches, which leads to a lot of odd-man situations. Another part of the problem is our forwards aren't sticking with their assignments, which leads to a man being open.

* Brown is in charge of the PP. We add offensive weapons in D Klingberg, C Strome, RW Vatrano, and C/LW McTavish. We should not be this mediocre. (Note, asst coach Ward left the team during the off-season for personal reasons.)

* Stothers is in charge of the PK. Fowler, Shattenkirk, Benoit, and Beaulieu are the PK blue liners - we have no shutdown d since we lost two in Lindholm and Manson.

It's very odd that Eakins' ES offensive unit can score at league average, but Brown with a man advantage cannot score. We need a new PP coach.

As for coach BB, Vancouver was supposed to a playoff contender, but they suck like us. I don't understand the necessity of a lateral move while doubling the payment on coaching.

So basically we don't have a head coach. We have 3 assistants. Eakins (5 on 5), Brown (PP), and Strothers (PK). The supposed "head coach" stays in his lane (5 on 5) and doesn't intervene if he sees that his team's special teams suck. He's fine losing game after game because he's unwilling to take charge of the ST group that isn't producing.

That's the point I was making with Verbeek sitting on his hands last year knowing Manson would be out for quite a while. In hindsight, you didn't need the TDL to signify the Ducks were going to be resetting b/c Manson was the foreshadowing event. All we needed was a bottom-pairing shutdown vet LD, which would have come very cheap like a 6th or 7th rounder.

As for Regenda, I agree with you about him getting sent down didn't make sense at the time. Before getting sent down, Regenda had a game where he only played 7:53. We gotta remember that Regenda was playing on the 4th line. Down in the AHL, Regenda was playing 1st line and 1st line minutes. In the last NHL game, Regenda was elevated to top-6 minutes, displacing both Comtois and McTavish. Regenda has the benefit of being waiver exempt and can play in the AHL, whereas McTavish cannot.

To start the season, Regenda was buried behind Comtois, Jones, and McTavish at wing. Maybe the org needed to see Regenda in a top-6 role on NA ice, which he got in four games with the Gulls. We may still rotate 2LW just because. LoL
