It’s not even necessarily that I worry about Gaudreau’s age curve. I expect him to be like 0.75-1.00 PPG area for most of it pending some insane injury or whatever.

I just have no faith in this organization to build a roster around him at this rate. We have an average at best U25 talent pool that probably won’t get much better especially given they’re burning through picks. We already have a handful of bad long term contracts on the books that aren’t going to get better as these players age more & get worse. We’re capped out for the foreseeable future too.

Where’s the plausible pathway even if Gaudreau age’s about as well as you could realistically expect to make this signing meaningful? It just seems like Giroux it will be another good player that gets shafted by this organizations inability to build a good hockey team.
This is exactly where I'm at. There's a version of the universe where I'm leading the charge for this move, it's just not this one.

Sounds like we could get JG at a discount. That would be worth moves like buying out Oskar. I don’t want to move JVR if it costs even a 2nd. Move Provy for 2 1sts and a prospect from LA or Anaheim.

I cant wait for Gaudreau signing with CGY after seeing Chuck "I drafted Kirill Kaprizov" Fletcher make a disastrous PR move and pay ransom to anyone for taking JvR. And I cant wait because it still wont mean anything about his GMing performance - because Joe Sakic made that trade I scoff at

The big nuclear bomb here is Torts.

Torts will be having this roster playing amazing. We will make the playoffs next year. Especially with Johnny and Patrick Kane coming in.

at this point Fletch may as well go all in on stupid..i mean he has been doing that so far

Please keep in mind that he knew full well he would be going after Gaudreau this week but still opted to sign DeAngelo, a player no one f***ing wants, to a $5 million contract.

This is the type of incompetence that will inspire movies. The yin to Moneyball's yang.

Of course, we wouldn't have a 2C either. So we'd have to go pay Kadri $8M.

Why?

Here's another idea, don't sign all these dipshit long-term contracts on players in the middle of their primes, keep draft picks, and build a team the right way instead of making it steadily worse and ruining the future for a decade to come after everyone is finally fired.

Like obviously this would all be dumb but I don't get Chuck's complete lack of consistency. Guys like Risto or Deangelo he's fine with dealing pieces and paying for but you'd draw the line at the 115 pt scorer??

It’s not like the Flyers would putting a relatively great offer on the table even with moving JvR.

I’m not saying things can’t change but from Gaudreau’s standpoint there’s really no reason to give insurance to the Flyers that you’re definitely coming here under those circumstances when other teams could be offering noticeably more. Fletcher would get absolutely killed (rightfully so) if he traded a 2024 1st to get rid of JvR & Gaudreau decided the money elsewhere was just too much to pass up.

A couple of us were talking about it at the draft, the ask to move JVR's deal in full has to be more than just a 1st round pick.

Well technically he could hand out like 11 now and be under the offseason cap after Lindblom's buyout but then teams have him over the barrel even more when it comes to dealing JVR since he'd have do it to be compliant

This situation is entirely of Chuck Fletcher's doing. It's his mess that could be preempting the team from signing one of the better players in the league who is a hometown boy. It's not even like this came out of nowhere. This organization likely had this date circled for years for the PR splash that they could make and yet here we are.

It's so aggravating.

TDA creates a LOT of offense, just look at his xGF/60, which is a more stable metric than pp/60.

If JG was 26, I'd do what it takes to land him, but he's 29, do you think even with JG, the Flyers are more than a marginal playoff team the next three seasons? And at 32, making $10+M a year, he'll make Hayes' contract look like a bargain.
