In regards to JVR rumors, it is fascinating to me how similar this is to the original trade that sent him to the Maple Leafs. I remember hearing the rumors about how he was going to be traded, then it was rumored it would be for Schenn, then it was realized that it was 1 for 1.

It has a similarly eerie feel to the situation right now where we just know Chuck is already grabbing his ankles, we are just waiting for the news to drop about how bad the trade is.

A truly remarkable feat for this franchise to do it to the same player twice

I'm trying to test something and I don't want to screw it up. Does this look about right? The actual lines/pairs/positions don't matter, just the players listed. Assume a straight JVR for Gaudreau swap, please. I'm aware it's not that simple. Do it anyway.

Konecny - Couturier - Gaudreau
Farabee - Hayes - Atkinson
Tippett - Frost - N. Cates
MacEwen - Laughton - Allison
????

Provorov - Ellis
Sanheim - Ristolainen
York - DeAngelo
Seeler - Attard

Hart
????
top 6 looks pretty good tbh. Then it gets fuzzy. This is why we all hated the risto deal...if that never happened, we would've had 5 mill to work with. Thats money for a depth d on the 3rd pair to mentor york and something else in the bottom 6. f***ing morons just making moves without any solid plan at all.

JVR represents the mediocrity of the last decade plus of flyers hockey to me so I’m admittedly biased and excited to see him dumped.

JVR vs Kane will live in my mind forever.

The sad part is if they sign Gaudreau they’re probably paying someone to go away next summer too to stay in line with the salary cap.

also, imagine we had another 7 mill to work with if we didn't have hayes.

So, per Seravalli, Gaudreau wants north of 10mil? Yeah, no thanks.

Based on comparable UFA contracts signed recently, he should be in the $11-11.5 range and that's what it will take for the Flyers to make it happen. He can get 8 x $10 from Calgary or $7 x $11+ elsewhere

and somehow he's been a good player for the only other franchise he's played for

1st line looks good - 2nd has a load of question marks

Farabee just had MAJOR neck surgery
Hayes is coming off of multiple surgeries and is one year older and a slob
Atkinson is now 33 years old

Hell the 1C is coming off of back surgery too

Like if they sign Gaudreau. You have Sanheim next off-season who’s likely gonna cost $6M+ for long term to retain.

We’d basically be doing what Doug Wilson did in San Jose years ago with signing every noteworthy player he had to a long term UFA deals with no regard which put them in the situation they are now. At least Wilson could hang his hat on their legit contending status at some point around that time though.

God, Gaudreau really is going to be our Parise/Suter signing isn’t it. Fletcher does it again.
If he signs it will be for half as long.

People want to bring Giroux back at age 34, but don't want to have JG for his 29 through 35 year old seasons?

I know. My ''no thanks'' is largely because I am pissed off we are talking about this in the first place. Trading JVR for assets - fine. Buying out Lindblom - thru clenched teeth I would say - fffine. But then use the cap space to acquire more assets not run after JG. Be Arizona. I know Comcast would never allow that, which makes me more angry and hopeless.

Quoting Steve Dangle Podcast, take the checkchuck-book away from Fletch.

Edit: yes I listen to SDP during my runs, fight me

ya there are a ton of questions marks which is why the risto/hayes money make it so much harder. We could've supplemented the lineup with pieces to round out the roster. Ellis would've really made things easier but.....

and if risto wasn't there, we could effectively hide TDA by pairing him with sanheim ala canes doing the same with slavin. Johnny G will just make us a fringe playoff candidate but more a team that goes into more cap hell (if that's even f***ing possible).

and hart soon too. There's legit no plan at all for the future. We're so f***ed.

And there's no f***ing way in hell chuck is capable of trading sanheim (because we might not be able to retain him) for a deal involving top picks /prospects/young players

Of course, we wouldn't have a 2C either. So we'd have to go pay Kadri $8M.
id rather have the 7 million than a guy who hasn't done shit since his first year. Hes coming off surgery, he's already slow af and getting older, and he isn't a great center at all. We could've made trades to fill in the 2c vacancy with those risto/ghost assets or the cap in any of the previous years

I wanted neither for the same reason, this team isn't close enough to pay through the nose for luxury items.
For one thing, Hart hasn't shown the consistency to carry a slghtly above average team (with JG) very far.
And that defense could be very good or very bad - we'll find out how good Shaw is as an assistant this season.

It’s not even necessarily that I worry about Gaudreau’s age curve. I expect him to be like 0.75-1.00 PPG area for most of it pending some insane injury or whatever.

I just have no faith in this organization to build a roster around him at this rate. We have an average at best U25 talent pool that probably won’t get much better especially given they’re burning through picks. We already have a handful of bad long term contracts on the books that aren’t going to get better as these players age more & get worse. We’re capped out for the foreseeable future too.

Where’s the plausible pathway even if Gaudreau age’s about as well as you could realistically expect to make this signing meaningful? It just seems like Giroux it will be another good player that gets shafted by this organizations inability to build a good hockey team.

Yup, that’s totally the only other option.

The sad thing is, you’re actually correct. With Chuck around, the only options are stupid, and even stupider
Lol ya. As if there no other means of acquiring centers. But you’re 100% right that he would do it the dumb way….which would hurt us even more

The big nuclear bomb here is Torts.

Torts will be having this roster playing amazing. We will make the playoffs next year. Especially with Johnny and Patrick Kane coming in.
