Excited to see Ehlers + Lowry, I think they can complement eachother pretty well. Lowry can lock it down in the D-zone, and ehlers can skate it out. On offense Ehlers takes a lot of shots and kind of does it all himself, Lowry just needs to stand in front of the net

Further to this, they shook up the power play significantly at todays practice as per Ken Wiebe.

Lines & D Pairs:

Connor- Dubois- Maenalanen
Perfetti- Scheifele- Appleton
Ehlers- Lowry – Wheeler
Barron – Stenlund – Kuhlman
Gagner, Gustafsson (non contact)

Morrissey – DeMelo
Dillon – Pionk
Schmidt – Samberg
Stanley-Capobianco

Power Play Units:

Schmidt-Morrissey-Wheeler
Scheifele-Perfetti

Ehlers-Pionk-Connor
Dubois-Stenlund

Also important to note that Hellebuyck was taking shots at practice.

Whoa i actually like this, though not sure Saku is the guy to fit with Connor-Dubois. Interested to see how it goes.

Glad to see our coach willing to experiment a bit.

Also, as much as I am usually on the "get Ehlers more minutes" bandwagon, I actually think he will be a fit with Lowry...
Yup, let Ehlers gain the zone, Lowry goes to the net for screens, tips and puck retrieval

Well he's certainly mixed it up. Wonder if this a hint for the TD. If we got Toews then that isn't a bad third line. You then move Lowry down. Bring in a replacement for Saku as well and it looks good.

idk i've never been a huge fan of Lowry with top-6 skill linemates.

over the last 3 seasons all of connor, ehlers, scheifele or wheeler have negative on-ice goal-differentials at 5v5 with lowry. i just do think they've traditionally meshed well.

id much rather have gagner in the top-6 over either appleton or saku.

Sure could use Eyssimont... don't see that Maenalanen has the speed for that line

speed or skill really.

the thing with the supposed grinders/fore-check guys in the top-6 is they still have pretty good offensive skills or IQ.

Palat, Hagel in TBL for instance. Palat provided physicality and great defensive play, but still can put the puck in the net. Hagel is tenacious on the forecheck & at causing TOs, now in the top-6 and converting/setting up chances. similarly you have players like Nichuskin, Lehkonen in COL who provide similar 2-way impact.

2-way or 200 ft player just doesn't absolve of the offensive zone, which i think sometimes gets missed around here.

I just think they are trying to get pairs going. Those pairs are Connor-Dubois, Perfetti-Scheifele, and Ehlers-Wheeler. I think it has more to do with playing on the road against teams that have 3 lines of scoring and trying to matchup. Formula seems to be two offensive players one defensive player per line, and a 4th line that kills penalties.

I'll predict the lines look different once the team comes back for the homestand. Maybe even earlier if it doesn't work, because there are some combinations that have worked in the past that coach Bones may try to lean on.

Nice that Bones is obviously thinking like alot of us re line makeover (find a complementary piece, not necessarily a shooter, to bring some balance to each line) Understand the thinking in having a forward like Maenolainen with Connor/DuBois but suspect that he will prove to be too slow afoot. Need a speedier aggressive puck-pursuit kind of guy here - maybe we will see someone before TDL.

Will reserve comment on PP changes but the decision to play Perfetti in the bumper position is bewildering. Clearly does not take advantage of the kids strengths elsewhere (half wall qb) and frankly, as much as Perfetti will make every effort to learn this bumper role,it will leave the PP operating at less than optimal for some time. Seems to me it also places Perfetti in a role where he unnecessarily takes extra physical punishment. This looks more and more to be an unwise decision made to appease Scheifele`s preferences.

Hadn't really thought about it in this way -- but I hope not.

Agree that 91 will do what he can to contribute from the bumper spot but he seems out of place there, just as Ehlers would be. We've seen how well 91 can distribute from the half wall and how disruptive a player like Dubois or even Wheeler can be in front of the net.

No one but the coaching staff should be determining who's where on the PP at this point in the season. I'd expect Bowness & Co to hold ground there.

Of course the coaches are calling the shots on roster decisions. The players calling the shots is just made up HF Boards stuff.

Are we sure that Cole will be in the bumper spot on that new unit. I will wait and see how it looks before commenting. But yeah I'm sure there is absolutely some give and take with coaches and players on roles. Coaches have to keep their stars happy so yes they likely take their preferences into consideration.

No we have no idea what the redesigned PPs will look like. It will be interesting to see. I'm hoping for movement and more effective options.

Blah. Going to have to wait until Bones provides an update tomorrow to see how long he's out for.

But this is an interesting recall choice. You'd think they'd want a more offensive player like Harkins up for him.

Last man down first man up or something like that. Would like to see Harkins recalled, can't be worse than the negative offense and negative defense the bottom 6 has been providing for the last while.

i didn't mind harkins' game when he was in this year. but yea the bar is so low with these bottom-6ers.

back to back years he's dealt with multiple injuries now.

lots of discussion on acquiring a top-6er before this injury, now it must be heightened a bit more

They still might not know tomorrow how long he will be out for. If it is a shoulder or back they might need a few days and some tests to determine the extent. Not good for the kid or us.

Yeah, this might change Chevy's focus depending the extent of Perfetti's injury and how long he will be out.

If Perfetti is out long term, I would just pull the trigger on Meier even if he is a rental. Can't waste our chances while we still have prime Helle.

AJF had a bunch of snipes from his off-wing with the Moose. Bring that up to the JETS!

I think he has a really good shot actually...he's a guy that reasonably can play with the offensive players. His forecheck is wild too.
