I'd say Bourque & Johnston have a similar chance, with a slight edge to Bourque because of his AHL eligibility.
I think Stankoven has a better chance than people think though. He's something that the Stars are missing, and that's being able to play with pace and score goals. Imo if he impresses in camp he will make it a very difficult decision on management. Based on the way Peverley talked in dev camp, they don't consider his size to be a weakness either. He will need to really stand out.
He and Johnston will reallyyyyy have to impress. They will need to look like veterans out there that clearly make the team better to make it, but they will get every opportunity to at least. Would be awesome to see all 3 guys stand out in a huge way
I really thought they had penciled Johnston in for a spot this year after some of Nill's comments, but looking at the roster there are 14 NHL forwards once Robertson is signed, and I think you could be right.
Peterson and Olofsson are the only waivers exempt of those two, and then you have guys like Kero and Studenic (2W) who seem kind of borderline, but are not waivers exempt. Olofsson actually has kind of a weird contract, while it is waivers exempt his salary is the same regardless of which league he is in. Kiviranta also seems on the edge of having a spot, but his contract is one way. I don't know how meaningful the rumors about Johnston making the NHL are, but as it stands I think there's an opportunity for him to make it because many of the guys in front of him aren't special.
As it stands I'd order them Johnston, then Stankoven, then Borque as far as likelihood to make it. I see Johnston as the favorite, the team seems pretty high on him. Stankoven's seasons was about on par, but he's small, so I'm sure it gives the Stars some hesitancy about his physical maturity, and there's the mem cup factor, which shouldn't be a factor, but probably is.
Borque is placed last because of his AHL eligibility. The Stars have the luxury of calling him up any time they want once he's in the AHL, so there's no need to anoint him out of camp if they have any hesitation. That's why I have him last on the list, there's some urgency with Johnston and Stankoven if either of them impress, not so with Borque.
