New pandemic (that turns out to be very mild and a false alarm and no one dies) cancelling the Cup finals.

Pulling for Dallas because of Pavelski. Generally indifferent towards the Panthers but I can’t root for good things to happen for the state of Florida at the moment.

Vegas and Carolina can get f***ed, though I’d certainly feel less strongly about Vegas winning than Carolina. The only cool thing about Carolina winning would be the lolz of Puljujarvi winning a Cup before Edmonton does and I guess seeing Burns win wouldn’t be that bad.

Yeah, I get the FL disdain. I don't even want to visit my friends and give that state a dime. However, Dade & Broward counties reflect a more sane and 'normal' society so I'm leaning FL from the east and sticking to anyone but the Canes. The state as a whole though, coming from a native Floridian:

Hilarious thing though, this sand bar will be underwater in 100 years.

Interesting. Im planning to move my family out of this shithole also known as new york. FL is one of the states im looking at. Have friends there and people are generally happy. Taxes are lower, more calm lifestyle, better school corriculums.

All this political nonsense aside why do you hate FL so much?

Beware of the myth that Florida is cheaper. I have friends leaving the state because home insurance premiums have doubled and tripled since 2021 and they’re only getting worse. Also Florida ranks in the top five most expensive states for health insurance rates and the auto insurance rates are sky high as well. Property taxes can also be very expensive depending on which county you live in. And they have the fastest growing rents in the country with the Covid population boom. Why do I know all this? Because part of my job is based there and I was asked if I wanted to relocate, plus my in-laws retired there a few years ago and they’re stunned at how expensive life is there.

The lifestyle is of course generally calmer but it comes at a cost that has skyrocketed over the last five years or so.

Thank you. All good things to concider in the near future. I was not 100% set on FL before and will definitely do a lot more digging before making final decision. Truthfully one of the biggest factors for me is what is being tough in schools. The stories that come out of ny public and private schools make me want to vomit. But also seeing the society rot right in front of my eyes due to some psychotic pro crime policians is also getwrenching.

Yeah I won’t comment on that since that’s personal, subjective criteria and everyone should make the decision they feel is best for their family, I just wanted to point out that “Florida is cheap” has largely become false. Real estate might be cheaper but it’s getting expensive and they get you in other ways. Plus, politics aside, recently signed legislation aimed at undocumented immigrants is bringing home construction, the restaurant industry, and other jobs typically worked by immigrants to a standstill. There’s also a looming truck driver strike as a result of that legislation so the cost of goods is going up as well.

This is getting pretty OT so if you want to continue the conversation I’ll move it to the OT thread.

No no all good. Sorry didint mean to go off tipic just saw comments about FL and was genrally interested in why people hate it since its one of the places i was concidering.

We should root for teams in cities and states that do right by their residents, such as:
Haha. yep exactly this.

Probably venturing on too much politics here so mods do your damnedest:

1) Everything is political. Everything. (eg. not talking politics is political).
2) Based on point 1, depends on your definition of 'better curriculums' or sometimes spelled 'corriculums'. lol Soooo, FL ranked one of the lowest in Adult literacy. The Gov banning books: Not a good look and appears very 3rd Reich-ist imo.
3) Taxes are lower to attract retirees which increases the # of tax payers so FL does average/below when it comes to public ed, but is bottom tier in educational spending (might have something to do with lower taxes)
4) Opiod crisis is insane there and much like a lot of poorer states, crime has been crazy where I used to live (eg people coming home and finding their AC units and copper tubing yanked out of their house). I know it's a national problem, but appears more profound there.
5) If your politics are on the right side of the aisle, then maybe the place to be? It's a weird mix of afluent notherners, trailer parks, and migrant workers. There's a reason 'Florida Man' is a thing.

Finally, it's not all bad of course: Being near to a metropolitan area in the southern part of the state: Good, but property insurance is high as is flood insurance. If you're thinking about a moving to a specific area, DM me. I spent 25yrs wandering around the redneck riviera. ;-)

Thanks. Also all good points to consider. If it makes any difference im in the middle of the isle when it comes to political side, though lately i prefer to not even be in the damn store let alone choosing sides of the isles. People are crazy. But i digress.

I was thinking about Sarasota, Tampa. Also possibly Jacksonville if im chosing FL. Also have family in SC so thats another place im cosidering.

I’ve lived in 8 different states and 2 different countries (including Maryland). Florida is by far my favorite. To each his own I guess.

I like Sarasota. Not too big...not too small. Close to Tampa...but far enough away. Might want to check St. Pete/ Clearwater too. If I were to live in FL it would be either there or the Keys. Like the other poster said, to each their own. One person's paradise is another's nightmare.

Oh, hard pass on Jax. I was there in January. No thanks...better than it used to be but, no. haha

I really dislike Florida. I've probably been to Florida over 30 times in my life, and there are great spots, but generally I find it overrated and not that cheap. My sister lived in Hartford for 8 years before moving to Charlotte, and she loves it. Caveat to that is she's from West Virginia and not a fan of the New England in general, like myself.

Me and the future Mrs. plan to relocate to Raleigh. We've been several times and it doesn't feel like a big city but has all the amenities, including a hockey team, which I will not support, but will go to many games. We will be like the Toronto fans who wear the opponents jersies to every game. We went to a Canes game last year against what was at the time Montreal's AHL team and it was a good time. We were 10 rows back for 90 bucks a piece, got a steal.

Jacksonville has a far higher violent crime rate than NYC or any of the big cities out west, just as a heads up.
