It is starting to get hilarious with the embarrassment of riches NJ has on the back end.

Luke Hughes
Simon Nemec
Shakir Mukhamadullin
Daniil Orlov
Seamus Casey
Topias Vilen

This is without including the numerous project defensmen that do one or two things exceptionally well.
Or Okhotyuk and Bahl.

And McCarthy and Leddy....
I’m meh on McCarthy and haven’t watched Leddy yet but he and Barabosha are long term projects. McCarthy doesn’t stand out to me when I’ve watched him in college. Of course with defenders you have to give them something of a longer leash. Even if none of thr long term guys pan out Nj really has the makings of a very good NHL defense to replace guys as they term out or age out or whatever. I have to think Bahl and Okhotyuk are given real chances to make the team next season. Frankly they should probably both be getting some games now. Smith has been fine but it’s unlikely he’s winning or losing games for NJ.

I see McCarthy playing in the NHL, he's not going to be a Top 4 defensemen (but who knows), but he will be serviceable and a decent 5-6th defenseman. I can also see him not signing with us as this is his senior year and he will be a UFA coming out of college, I would not be shocked if he signs with the Ducks as apparently he and Zegras are besties, that and knowing how far down the depth chart he is with the Devils.

Don't underestimate Smith's value as a mentor to our young defensemen, he is beloved by his teammates and coaches. When Luke does join the team this year, having Smith around will be a boon for Luke's development as an all around defenseman.

Mentor is fine. I’d just sprinkle in some extra starts for Bahl.

I think they will come, but when you have a team that's won 6 out of 7, gotta go with the hot hand. Plus it would benefit Smith and us if he played around 55-60 games. But if Bahl was on half of the other teams in the league, he be in there every night. He's going to be in the league for a long time.

Popi, that tree on skates, ties it up with 6 seconds left (his team lost in a shoot out).

He has 8 points, with 5G, in 22 GP. (The leading scorer on his team, which is very bad, has 11 points.)

Popi was scoreless in his first 7 games and then broke out with 5G 1A in the next 7. He went cold for 5 games, but he’s back!, and has 1G and 2A in his last 4 games.

I was thinking in terms of left handed defenders. There is also Orlov who is generating a bit of early season KHL buzz. The defensive prospect depth was obviously a priority for Fitz and he's done a nice job building the pipeline on both the right and left side. I guess he tries to rebuild the center pipeline over the next couple of drafts.
and we still have Okhotyuik, Vukoijevic and even Vilen as lefties. I'm not sure Edwards will do much, but who knows.

The reality is most of them won’t make a NJ roster. There just isn’t room. Still you hope a couple develop so well they force their way into the roster. There is really only one left handed top six roster spot for the next five years give or take. Maybe next season someone can play second pair for a season but I’m skeptical that Luke doesn’t have that spot in two years at the latest and of course Siegenthaler is hopefully with NJ for a long time. I could see Mukhamadullin on a third pair eventually if Bahl can’t quite figure out the puck moving and offense. NJ is really well positioned there. In a couple of years right handed defense will also look pretty amazing as a couple of this year’s picks start to develop.

Honestly, not the best showing from Hughes in this one, though the whole team hasn’t been particularly good. Do think Casey has been noticeable, however.

Wolverines bounce back to win in OT last night - splitting the series and handing Penn State its first loss.

Anyone catch the game and anything to see with the three NJ draft picks?

Devils' website did a story about draft pick Artem Shlaine last week.

He scored his sixth goal of the season for Northern Michigan last night as the Wildcats completed a sweep of one-win Lake Superior State.

The CCHA is considered to be a notch below Hockey East, where he played his first two seasons for UConn.

He is one off from his goal total last season.
Anything to see here?

He is a pretty bad skater, not sure there is anything there.

Luke and Seamus both had assists I believe
Box score says Casey had primary on goal that made it 2-0 Michigan and Luke had secondary on OT goal. I’m too lazy to find replay of either but I’m sure the young’ uns with their newfangled technobabbles can dig them up. Now where is my tv remote with one big button on it? Pass me thr pencil I can’t get my fingers in the numbers on thr rotary phone!!!

Craig Button's projection of Canada's WJC squad has Brennan and Stillman: Young stars Fantilli and Bedard headline Button's projected WJC roster - TSN.ca

Off hand it seems like a below average crop for Team Canada this year.

I'm surprised that Stillman would be under consideration.

I was as well. Looks like Canada doesn't have a ton of right shot wingers at its disposal this year. Arizona seemingly told Dylan Guenther he had permanently made the NHL team recently. I guess we'll see if they prioritize an energy type guy like Stillman over a skill guy like Jagger Firkus.
