Verbeek on the coaching staff:

Verbeek said there a lot of things that go into the process of evaluating the coaches. He said he is going to take the full season to evaluate how the coaching staff did and if any changes need to be made.

This probably doesn't bode well to Eakins. I imagine if there were some things under the hood, invisible to the public eye, that Eakins was doing well, Pat would tell it. Now it looks like he leans negative.

Honestly, I like Eakins, I think he's a great person and a mentor for young guys. But he has struggled without a great supporting cast as last year for the first half of the season. Then the team was looking great as well.

Eakins has his moments, but moving forward think we need to not only fix the roster, but change the coaching staff. If we do that, it's going to be a rough start next season even with a better roster for them to adjust to a new system. But anything better than this season is a win, of course that bar is so low, can trip on it, lol.

Honestly, I'd love to see what would happen if he just changed his defensive systems. The players seem to like and respect him. They never quit and the kids seem to ha e progressed but the way the team defends just doesn't make sense.

What's the defensive system now?

We rely mostly on the rush for offense. We have a poor cycling game due to lack of forechecking, and too many ones and done in the opponents zone. I look at teams like Carolina and they are transitioning the puck quickly out of their own zone, and quickly past the neutral zone.

Our D are hesitant and they'll rim the puck around the boards, ending up as an icing or a turnover. There are very few crisp passes out of the zone made to our forwards, who are already going on the attack only to be caught back, due to a turnover, and then are spending their entire shift defending, due to lack of back-checking, and leaving guys wide open.

Only someone like Fowler, and when he returns Drysdale, are able to make those crisp passes out of the zone when they are on their game. We don't have crease clearers or D who can knock someone off the puck. We need a combination of both transition D and physical D. Benoit is physical yeah but he is just not that good, is a 6/7D at best. Kulikov if he played a pairing below where he was would have been very good if he had stayed once we got depth above him.

Don't disagree and none of that is really Eakins fault. But i see legit issues with guys losing their marks or failing to pick them up in the first place as well is being terrible at preventing the back door play.

This roster was constructed by Verbeek, and it is not a good one. Eakins system is certainly a concern but I don't think he should be getting all the blame. Also, our PP, if we had a decent PP like last season would see a difference.

The roster is not good but these are supposedly professional hockey players and for them to look completely lost after the puck gets moved from one side of their defensive zone to the other screams system and coaching. How many tap in goals at the far post do the Ducks give up? Sure seems like a lot and that is because players get lost. I find it hard to believe professional hockey players get that confused that quickly this deep into a season if not for bad system play which for me is on the coach.

Absolutely, which is why I'd love to see him change it.

That's a lot of roster complaints there. You need talent to execute talented things.

2021-22 ... outbound
Lindholm: 61 games, 22 pts, and +0 rating
Manson: 45 games, 9 pts, and +0 rating
Getzlaf: 56 games, 37 pts, and -14 rating
Milano: 66 games, 34 pts, and -9 rating
Rakell: 51 games, 28 pts, and -7 rating

2022-23 ... inbound
Klingberg: 50 games, 24 pts, and -28 rating
Kulikov: 61 games, 15 pts, and -11 rating
Vaaks: 23 games, 2 pts, and -16 rating
Beaulieu: 34 games, 4 pts, and -16 rating
White: 28 games, 4 pts, and -10 rating
Vatrano: 63 games, 31 pts, and -26 rating
Strome: 63 games, 29 pts, and -23 rating
Leason: 48 games, 7 pts, and -20 rating

Although those numbers look abysmal, did Eakins help improve some people's games?

Klingberg's last 11 games: 9 pts and +1 rating
Kulikov's last 17 games: 6 pts and +6 rating

As you noted, the Ducks are 11-11-4 recently. It took a while to finally get some people on the same page.

If we don't look at past records, then it's easy to say Eakins sucks and there's no system. Even going 11-11-4, Eakins still has no structure. What last year before Eakins came onboard? They were 3rd in the Pacific. Did they get there without structure too? They had a top-5 PP and top-8 PK unit at that time as well. Lindholm and Manson had no problem with structure and we now see how much those two helped make the team look vastly better before they were jettisoned at the TDL.

I've conceded that Eakins won't be Verbeek's coach of the future b/c most GM's bring their own coach. When we moved from Bryan Murray to Burkie, Burkie moved on from Babcock to Carlyle. But putting a lot of blame on Eakins for this season makes no sense b/c it's essentially the extended version of the Ducks after last year's TDL, but worse. The team lacks talent and physicality. None of that is on Eakins. And yet the talented kids are producing offensively. 19 year old turn 20 this past Jan 30, McTavish, is the third highest scoring Duck with 37pts and own a -13 rating. How is McTavish more defensively responsible compared to Verbeek's forward acquisitions of Strome, Vatrano, and Leason? Simple, they're not talented like a 19-year old McTavish.

Verbeek's coach of the future might be McIlvane and he's starting out with the Gulls next season. If that's Verbeek's guy, then keep Eakins around for a year. We're gonna be in rebuild mode next year if Verbeek remains true to his vision, so no point bringing someone else in. No idea who else would be coach next season if Eakins is to be replaced. That should bring a good conversation thread, "Who should be the next Ducks' head coach?"

It's a loaded question. It's not like PV is going to tell Eakins hea going to replace him during a presser during the season.
He didn't pepper in anything positive, which is standard practice when speaking to the fans/media about the team. Leads me to believe Eakins is gone and that's not unexpected.

The sooner Eakins is gone.. The better the team will be.. They need a veteran Coach.. Trotz would do wonders here..

I wouldn't be surprised either. That being said PV is suggesting that there is more than just the record that goes into coaching evaluations. That does suggest that he could go either way. It's not a given.

Trotz was just named GM of Nashville.
