LaCombe just took a hit directly to his cage. The other player received a major penalty. LaCombe seemed ok and he is on the PP right now.

I think that player got kicked out of the game. He left his skates to deliver a hit to LaCombe's head. Minny's scored 2 PP goals so far with over a minute left to play.

I did not know Moore was 2nd in scoring, assist, and +/- for defensemen on the team - behind Thrun. Wow!

This is the biggest reason I'm not all that optimistic on Zellweger to be honest. How many skaters his size even play as NHL defenseman to begin with, let alone as a reliable top 4. Spurgeon is one of the only guys I can think of. I wonder if he tried to make things work as a forward at some point and just couldn't stand out from the pack, since smaller wings in the NHL are way more common. That seems like a much easier path to the NHL.

Mintyukov is probably our best hope right now to turn into a 1D given his physical profile and skillset, and if he flames out then we're likely going to have a big hole there for a while with Lindholm gone. Drysdale has bulked up since being drafted and is much closer to the prototypical size of an NHLer, he's not really on the same planet physically as Zellweger.

Torey Krug, Vatanen, Girard, Phil Housley, Spurgeon

I’m sure there are more. Zellweger is not as small as you think he is. He’s about 5’9 175 and can probably get to 185. He’s not Nathan Gerbe out there

Ideally, Zell can play on the "3rd" pair (if the Ducks don't have a true 1D, hopefully they'll have a 2A/2B/2C pairing), with Minty leading one pair, Dry on another, and Zell on the 3rd. He'd definitely need to be paired with a bigger DFD. Might have to be with Benoit, and keep them as a true 3rd pairing (like Vats/Stoner) but with Zell getting more PP time. But with LaCombe/Moore/Warren/Hinds/future picks and the Ducks track record with d-men, hopefully a higher than normal number will pan out.

I think Krug is really a pretty good projection for Zellweger. A 2nd pairing LHD who brings it offensively enough to make up for his deficiencies. Would take that in a heartbeat

We don’t need him to be Makar or Fox

I think Pavel is on the right track to becoming #1 pairing. Once he hits an NHL weight room and gets the development from ducks personal, he will shine. He seems to adjust accordingly. He his a high IQ and somewhat of a killer instinct. Zell will be a dynamo no matter where he plays. I honestly have extremely high hopes for Luneau and believe he will be a C one day.

Why does Zell need to be Makar or Fox? Drysdale's our 5'11 comparison to Makar or Fox. Then there's Minty as well. Both Drysdale and Minty are top-10 overall picks. Zellweger is a second rounder and has been building his frame like a MAC truck. The player GM Murray cited for Zellweger's player's comp is Spurgeon.

None of RD Drysdale, LD Zellweger, or LD Minty scream shutdown D, or at least at this moment. The org can create balance with their pairings with a more defensive minded d-man. Our known defensive D-men are 6'3 RD Moore, 6'3 LD Hinds, and 6'5 RD Warren. We got two-way guys in LD/RD LaCombe, RD Luneau, RD Andersson, and RD Helleson (I think Helleson's a two-way guy b/c I don't see/read shutdown from San Diego).

We need a collection of talented D-men if we don't have a Lindholm, Makar, or Fox. Fortunately, we do have them in our system and we'll be adding more with the mass of draft picks in the next couple of drafts. And if we have too much talent in two years, then we can trade for top tier talents while still having depth.

Honest question (and not necessarily directed at you), what is Minty's work ethic like? He seems to be another one of those guys that has a strong willingness to learn, sounds like he's learning a more structured game with his new team? One of the best things about the current crop of kids (for the most part) is their work ethic. Zegras couldn't score a goal in his first WJC, improved his shot dramatically after (I'm not so sure that he isn't just improving because of ego). From what everyone says on McTavish, he's the first on the ice and last off and willing to work with (and more than that approaching) coaches and older players to get advice. Sucks that Dry lost a year and we couldn't see if he was going to make a huge leap, but even before being drafted he was attending clinics. Zell has been putting on muscle and working out in the offseason (apparently), so it seems like he's putting in effort. Hoping Minty is one of those guys and these kids develop this as a team culture going forward.

He seems to adapt to each environment pretty well. Even if it may take some time, once he does he thrives. To me, he’s a coaches dream.

I've said it here and there, but the best thing about these defenseman having great junior seasons is that Anaheim can potentially trade one of them and (maybe) get better help in return. I've been worried about his size and his defending abilities since we drafted him. Yeah it's great that he can produce, but what about actually playing defense?
