Rumor: 2022-2023 Trade Rumors and Free Agency: The Search for a 2C

I mean it might be the reason we look back at this core not winning another one. Say what you want about age and suspensions, but Naz was the absolute perfect 2C for this team.

I can understand why they didn't feel compelled to give a huge payday to Kadri knowing full well his insane season was an outlier, but in hindsight getting the 2C problem solved is going to be far more expensive than if they had just re-upped Naz. Counting on Newhook to figure it out was a bad bet.

Anyone would take a free Kadri. Tell me if you'd still take Kadri if it means no Nuke.
That was never the choice though. Nuke was rightfully their top priority, but they had a tremendous amount of time to put the pieces together to keep Naz. It's pretty obvious at this point that he was waiting on the Avs to make their decision before pulling the trigger with Calgary.

If we wanted to play without defensemen, sure. But if we want another cup, we can't go all-in on just forwards. Especially one that might immediately regress on year 1 of 8.

There would've been no need for that tradeoff if the Avs had pushed harder to dump EJ's deal (and yes, it would have been possible) and/or not re-signed Manson.
Signing a 7M forward means taking 7M away from elsewhere. It is always a tradeoff.

Wouldn't be much different than the situation our D is in now given the injuries. And I liked the Manson signing at the time, but hindsight has not been kind to that decision so far this season.

As for Kadri regressing, that was a given. There's no arguing that his fit here was exceptional though...and chances are he would've lived up to that AAV through most if not all of this team's window, which obviously would've been most important.

I’m aware of that. Finding a new home for EJ would take care of 6M right there. Not re-signing Manson bumps that number up to around 10.

FTR I’m not saying it’s a no-brainer to re-sign Kadri, just saying it was very doable. They chose not to. Depending on what they do going forward, we’ll see how well that decision ages. I can understand why they didn’t lock down Naz long term but it’s still gonna cost at least as much if not more to replace him.

Kadri was the same price as Rodrigues + Manson.

Again, the point was that it was doable, not about whether they should have done it or not.
I know, I was just agreeing with you and showing that it was doable.

Personally I still wouldn't have signed Kadri to 7 year contract. He's barely worth the money on year one, that's a very bad contract at his age.

However, that opinion may or may not change with the move that the Avs will (or will not) make at the deadline.

Yeah I figured it out and deleted the post but you beat me to it.

We will see what they do. I can understand wanting to avoid too many egregious contracts but if they fail to truly go for it this season I think they’ll regret it.

Duchene has played 12 games against the Avs since being traded, scoring 11 goals and 1 assist in those games. Safe to say that's his top scoring rate against any team in his career. The vendetta is strong
I wonder what Duchene's W/L record is in those games, though.

Honestly good for him. I disliked Duchene for quite a while after the trade, but that podcast he was on recently where he talked about everything that went down more openly changed my tune on it.

Dude was just ready for a change, cant hold a grudge against someone for simply wanting a new opportunity elsewhere. Imagine being stuck at a job you're not happy in and being unable to seek new employment opportunities and being unable to leave your job. I'm sure someone will chime in with the "He's making millions of dollars. Suck it up" garbage response. The money really doesn't matter if you're not happy, and money does not always by happiness.

Plus the way he still talks about Sakic after all that was pretty cool, the admiration and respect still being very obvious.

Ultimately it worked out as good as you can ask for us. We've made the playoffs every single year since, made at least the 2nd round every subsequent year since the trade and obviously won the cup with a key part of that trade playing a significant role in that cup win.
