Well, Josi had more points than Makar last year.

If everything stays the same IMO Dahlin gets it.
Yet it was a ridiculously close vote despite Josi often playing like a 4th forward. Kinda tells you everything there is to know about the Norris. If you get a ton of points despite neglecting the defensive side of the game that's still considered good enough.

If Makar just said he is done being a complete player and started focusing only on offense his Norris chances would probably increase a bit with the added production, despite being a worse player.

I think reducing Makar’s TOI particularly on the PK will work wonders for returning his game to form. Makar has been trying to conserve energy by being less of a one man breakout and relying on making stretch passes from deep in his own zone, however in order for Makar to play to the top of his ability he needs to be skating and opening lanes rather than trying to force passes. This is why I believe he’s turning the puck over more, he’s trying to be too conservative with his energy in order to shoulder playing 26+ minutes a night. I personally believe his best hockey is played when he’s skating 22-24 minutes a night, where he’s still on the ice more than enough to impacting almost half the game, while ensuring he has the legs game in and game out to provided the dominant play we’re used to.

I will hammer the point that I think Makar notoriously starts slow and tends to pickup momentum as the season progresses. Now I think we’re a bit past a slow start (by his standard) and into a bit of a down year in comparison to last season, however I think around the 40 game make he’ll start to look more like his old self especially if they’re able to cut his ice time down by 2-5 minutes.

If he is only good for 22 mins than he is not a #1 dman

Not sure what logic is tied to this magical 22 minute mark for you, but if he’s playing better than everyone else on the ice and is better playing in the 22-24 minute range I don’t care if you don’t consider that a #1 defenseman. What I care about is seeing the team get the most out of their players, winning games and keeping players healthy/not burning them out.

I don't really care about the definitions of a #1D (though Makar clearly is regardless if he is playing 20 or 28 minutes)... I want Makar to be as effective as possible. The PK load (and minute load in general) that he is carrying is hurting his play. More than that though, PK minutes are hard and expose him to a much great chance of injury. Makar going down from a broken hand or foot is the last thing the Avs really need.

My take away from this thread is that everyone sucks now. Apparently everyone spent too much time last summer getting drunk and couldn’t get it together for the season. Except for our Finns who apparently were unaffected by the booze
They sweat it all out in the sauna tbf. If EJ could handle a few minutes in the sauna maybe he wouldn’t be perma drunk.

76 is perfect. 4x7 intra division (28) + 2x24 against everyone else (48)
The problem here is that I think the conferences should still somehow be separate.
If we want to have 32 games vs. the other conference then that automatically only means 50 games for the remaining 15 teams in your conference.
Thats 3 games/team +5.

If we really want to keep it at 82 games, the only way I see it working if we reduce interconference games.

Interconference:
Home+away against one division in the other conference.
Home or away (50-50 split) against the other division in the other conference.
So e.g. Central plays Metropolitan home+away, Pacific plays Atlantic home+away in 2022.
Swapped in 2023 etc.

16+8 = 24 games against other conference
You would miss to see 4 teams at home each year from the opposite conference.
I dont think it would be a huge loss overall.

Other division in own conference:
3 games against other division in conference = 24

Intradivision:
You play each team 5 times, aside from one team only 4 times, rotating throughout the years.
Total 34 games.

24 games against other conference
24 games against other division in conference
34 games against own division
82 games.

For me this is the best solution if they want to increase intra-division games.
It would not be too many games against the same opponents as to make them boring, but still having more emphasis on that for the playoff push.

Timmins PPG in Toronto: BAD TRADE!
Man did we pay through the nose for Kuemper.

I was looking at the upcoming Avs picks on Capfriendly, we are already missing most of our 2023 picks but many 2024 as well. I then remembered that our 3rd 2024 was also in the Kuemper trade because we won the cup.

1st + 3rd + Timmins

Damn.

Yup... and for 1 year of his services as was pretty predictable.
